Been using the G9 for the last year and didn't know this was possible! Thanks for enlightening me. These Lumix cameras are way ahead of other manufacturers.
I agree. I'm still digging into the menus of the G9! I think we get used to shooting a certain way based on our first digital camera and don't really explore all the features that the newer cameras have. (At least that's how it was for me!) And we rely on editing to fix our mistakes after the fact. Thanks for watching!

I did not know I could do this on my lumix. I do it all the time on my Fujifilm x100f. After watching, I just now processed and edited 4 raw files recovering shadows and saved them as jpegs on my G9 thanks to you. Mahalo!
Great to hear it. If you do end up updating Photoshop or LR, you'll still get access to the Lumix Photo Styles if you do shoot raw files. That's kind of neat. Have you ever tried shooting jpgs with the GX9. I was very resistant to jpgs until I started to really understand the Lumix settings. Now I rarely shoot raw files. Saves me so much time and also space on my hard drives. Cheers and enjoy your GX9, I've also go my eye on that small camera!
@@ImageMaven Yepp - I usually do shoot to jpg these days (although I used to use RAW on my previous OLYMPUS). The main motivation is as you suggest, I've still got to learn all that the GX9 can do for me! (PS - also just discovered that the free Darktable software has a Lumix RAW processor which can then work with GIMP.)
Dear Marlene, You talking and showing the G9 made me change up my canon plan was wishing buying a r series canon but after seeing the most nice things you can do and how you make it look so easy i just did buy the G9 with 12-60 the low light one , also bought l-log as i am filming a bit (kinda waste cine d is superb but ok) i am just amazed at how smart you are i wanted to buy a book i just look up a google how to g9 and always your name pops up haha i must say i did make a blind purchase of the camera also sony 300mb/s card must say after testing the burst the 90 mb sandisk kinda dies after 15 ones sony i lost count i had to stop even raw+jpeg it wont stop haha uhs-II is great but Marlene thank you for making me change my mind also the lens i want 100-400 i have to save first some mony but wow this is so great i did also buy the grip panasonic’s original don’t want second brands maybe break stuff stick to original :) so now you now i am so happy btw tou have a dutch name i myself live in netherlands :) have a great day

Have to say, always love your sporty attire! I appreciated this segment on the G9. I am sympathetic to people who can't spend the huge amount of cash to keep with all the advancing technology. Currently, I am doing RAW post-processing in Lightroom, Luminar 3 and ON1 and these programs make RAW processing fast and easy. Much easier than in-camera, but wow, the G9 provides that! However, I will be soon in retirement. I will need to find solutions to keep expenses way down. My days of spending money to buy a future dream camera are about over, not to mention keeping up with computers and software. Hopefully, there will be some bright minds that help us baby boomers keep our camera hobby alive and well as finances dwindle.
Hi Steven, Great to have your voice on the topic, once again. Yes the ongoing software cost is a problem when you're on a tight budget. It may force some to shoot jpgs. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Or you can ask for Adobe subscriptions for B-Day presents. Even the one-off priced software does have upgrades every year or two, so it often adds up to the same cost in the end. Every artist has supplies. Painters have paint, brushes and canvases. It's all part of our joys in life. Hey I even wear out my skateboards every year or two. Cheers!
I bought a G9 last month -- a much-needed upgrade from my 10-year-old GF1. I greatly appreciate your deeply knowledgeable and informative videos, Marlene, as I familiarize myself with the complexities of the magnificent G9. With the caveat that "If it works for you, then it's right," I disagree with processing raw images in-camera -- unless there's absolutely no alternative. The reason is simply the 3-inch display screen. If we buy impressive, modern cameras that churn out exquisitely sharp 20 megapixel images, why then edit the image on a 3-inch screen as if it were shot on a Kodak Brownie? No. Professionals -- and even enthusiasts -- should take their images seriously and edit their work on a large screen, ideally on a properly-calibrated monitor. If you're bothering to shoot raw, edit on a large monitor, otherwise just shoot jpg -- especially with the G9, your jpgs will turn out great. I work on a 8-year-old 27" iMac, using Photoshop from Adobe Creative Suite 6 -- the last version that you could buy outright and not feed the Adobe Machine rent every month. But this version of Photoshop will not process G9 raw files, so I downloaded DNG converter and in the Get Info box set all RW2 files to open with DNG. Now I can simply double click on the downloaded file and it automatically converts to a format I can use in my 2012 version of Photoshop, then edit on a screen appropriately sized and calibrated for a 24MB image. I heartily agree that the Domino Effect is torture on our budgets. But the answer needn't cost money nor compromise our images.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences Bruce. I agree about the raw file processing in camera, but decided to cover it for those that would use it. Truth is, I never shoot raw files anymore. I don't need to for what I shoot. Like you said the jpgs coming out of most modern cameras are really good. My 8 year old video about how to open raw files from new cameras using the DNG Converter has over 876,000 views and still going strong. So I agree that if you're smart about it, you don't need to upgrade your computer. But I found that computers do die (lost my 7 year old iMac a few months back) and when they do you lose all that old software, as it no longer works with new operating systems, so you're forced forward. Plus as an educator I'm kind of duty bound to do some exploration into the future as well. I hope you enjoy your G9 as much as I do! I've had mine for 2 years and still have much to learn. Yes, it's possible. I personally think it's a quite bit easier to do raw edits on the computer, but if you're traveling and away from computer access, it's a great way to do some edits and then Wifi a file over to a mobile device. Thanks for your comments.

Brilliant video. So well explained and the difference is very noticeable. I tried this on my Panasonic fz1000 the other day, just playing about really and it did work but I think I need to practice more. I’m about to get a Lumix LX100 mk 2 which is a bit more portable so I can carry a camera everywhere. I know this camera has this function plus the L Monochrome D and 4K photo modes. Looking forward to getting that and experimenting as well. I think the raw processing is so good that I’ll use raw a fair bit now. I used to exclusively shoot jpeg but it seems way more flexible to shoot raw plus jpeg and then raw process in camera. I’m not really into p/shop or l/room so raw processing in camera looks really good to me. Great video. I love your videos, so informative yet they don’t make me feel like an amateur. Hi Chris, you're going to love that little LX100! I do love my small GM5 and take it everywhere, even on holidays, instead of my "big" G9. Yes this in camera raw processing definitely takes some testing to get the best settings for your own tastes, but it's nice to have the option and the "insurance" especially where WB and exposure tweaking are concerned. Thanks for adding your comments to the discussion, and have fun getting to know your new Lumix camera too! You'll find many of the features in the Lumix G9 are completely the same on other Lumix cameras so hopefully you'll get some more tips from my videos. I hope it warms up for you soon. Thanks Marlene for showing me a feature that I had been looking on my G9. I am interested in "tweeking" the photo style (e.g. Standard, Vivid, Natural, etc) to get the balance (sharpness, contrast, NR, saturation) I want for general use. I've seen recommendations for "tweeks" such as Natural with Contrast 0, Sharpness -1, Noise reduction -2, Saturation +1. I haven't found a rational explanation anywhere for making adjustments. It seems more like trial and error to find something that works for you. Now, I'll be able to use my raw file to try different settings on the same picture to see what combination (style and setting) I prefer for general use.
Great to hear this was helpful. Yes, it's definitely trial and error, or try-all as I like to call it. ;) Everyone's taste is different so there's really no right answer here. Also keep in mind that you can create recipes in your JPG files too. And that's usually the way I like to operate. The less processing I have to do on a computer, the happier I am. Oh my, I stopped using raw a few years ago deciding compared to today's jpgs its just not worth it, but this is wonderful for that shot you might not have gotten right in white balance and can quickly fix in camera. And I almost skipped this video.

You run the best lumix channel..bought a new g9 two days ago..and your videos are pretty helpful in understanding the full potential of the beast..it came with a 12-60mm leica kit lens..what portrait or wide angle lenses I need to add since I have been a canon shooter and don't have any native mft lenses..please help in choosing
Use that kits lens for a few months and you'll figure out what you need next. It's a really good zoom range (24-120mm ff equivalent) and will get you from wide to portraits. Why add gear if you don't need it? Keep it simple until your needs change enough to warrant getting more lenses. Hope you enjoy your G9 as much as I do! Cheers.

Thanks for watching! Sadly, I don't get out to shoot at night much anymore, as I work evenings/overnights. But I sure do appreciate those people who can get great moon shots. Plus I don't have a long lens. My longest is 35-100mm f/2.8 (70-200mm equivalent) so I'd have to crop a lot to fill the frame. As with anything, I say, just start experimenting. Night photos are pretty easy. I have a blog post on that already. www.imagemaven.com/night-photography/ But moon photos are unique, because the moon is really bright and most people over-expose it. So start experimenting. And keep an eye on your histogram so you don't over-expose your photos.
Great video Marlene, I was curious what tripod/stand/monopod and head was used in the video? Looks sturdy, I'm stuck buying my first in-house "stand" for a G9 setup and want something that I can sit next to and use without too much floor space taken, but stable and dependable. Any thoughts are appreciated!
The tripod my G9 is sitting on is my trusty 35 year old Manfrotto 050 with a Manfrotto 494RC2 ball head on it. The tripod I use to shoot my videos is a Promaster carbon fibre w/twist lock legs and a Manfrotto 128RC video head. It has a handy hook for your camera bag which can also be used for a weight if it's super windy. The old 050 never leaves the studio. It's just too heavy to lug around. But I do take the ball head off of it and put it on the other legs if I'm shooting outdoors or on client locations. They take up a fair bit of floor space, as any good tripod does, so that they are more stable. I've used cheaper smaller tripods, but they don't do it for me. I need to be able to stand up with my camera. I don't use my monopod much, but I do have a Manfrotto one that has some baby tripod legs on the bottom. And it can take both the video head and the ball head, which is handy because I have quick releases on those so the camera can come off quickly for carrying. For long lenses and wildlife shooting, a monopod is great. Saves your neck and give more stable shots. Hope that helps.

It never seems to get in the way.

Thanks for the great videos on G9. I am about to get one so I watched all your videos about this camera. How do you fix the distortion of the tall objects, buildings etc. leaning toward the center of the image? Is there a way to fix it in the G9? I think Olympus M1ii has something like that build in. That has more to do with the lenses. I don't think the G9 has any distortion fixers. I usually do that in editing if it's a problem. I shoot a lot with my 7-14mm so I get a lot of distortion, but I shoot with that in mind and use it stylistically. Not so great for architecture thought. You can download the lens profiles in LR and do corrections there too. Hope that help. And enjoy your G9!
Marlene...excellent, excellent videos. Is there a way to set up a group of presets like: +3 Sharpening, +2 Shadows, +3 Definition and use them automatically every time you shoot in RAW with out going into the menu and doing this manually ?
Great question Bill! Yes, I think you can. I've done some tests. You need to input all the settings as if you were shooting a jpg. But instead have quality set on RAW (or RAW + jpg) and then you can assign the settings you want to start with to a C mode on the dial-Custom Set Mem. That’s great, thanks! I am positively surprised too see advanced photographers using Jpeg. I don’t like to spend too much time on computer since I use computers at work already enough. Some people give the impression if you don’t use raw development on computer you are not serious. But since I pay lots of money for the camera I expect it to get things right on the technical side which contains raw processing. Question: is it possible to connect the camera to a bigger screen while performing the raw processing to see the screen big? How is the quality of the in camera raw processing compared to computer software ?
You got it. I expect the expensive cameras to do the work for me too. BTW Photojournalists are not allowed to shoot raw files. I used to preach that raw was best too. And in the past it was. But not anymore. I got over it, but it was a paradigm shift in my thinking and I did a lot of testing too. Plus as I get older I'd rather spend time doing other things than processing images. As far as viewing on a bigger screen, I did try wirelessly hooking up the camera to my iPhone while doing the raw processing and I wasn't able to get to this raw processing menu when connected via WiFi or Bluetooth. But when I do figure it out, there will be another video. I suppose you could attach to a TV via the HDMI port, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a mobile system. As far as quality, that depends. I do find it somewhat hard to judge colour on the back of the camera (as you probably noticed from my sample photos) and like I mentioned in the video, I would do your own sharpness tests. Yes, it's not ideal doing it on a super small camera screen. I'm not a Windows user myself, but there are many many image editing apps out there. The two that I use are Adobe LR - subscription based and Luminar - One time price. You can also check out Photoshop Elements - one time price. It's affordable and quite powerful and available for Windows. To be honest I rarely shoot raw files anymore. Lumix cameras are so sophisticated that I find I can do pre-processing in camera and end up with very little extra work to do on my images. Saves me so much time and I'm not a fan of sitting in front of a screen all the time. I'd rather be out taking photos than editing them. Cheers and thanks for your question.
@@ImageMaven Thank you. I edit my jpegs: rotate, crop, levels, curves, sharpen and cloning out the unwanted. But sometimes I need the raw file to fix Highlights and Shadows. I just thought it would be nice if we could download these basic camera tools to do this. But we muddle through 😉 I'm tempted to invest in Luminar, but it's hard to make the switch, I've been using Paint.Net with the occasional Gimp tool for so long. Loving your videos, thanks again. 😁
@@williamdavid4823 Many tablets have the basic image editing features even with raw files. But if I was you, I'd look at Photoshop Elements (just make sure it still opens raw files). And I think you can download a 30-day trial. You can certainly do a trial with Luminar. And you can use Luminar as simply or advanced as you wish. The only thing you need to worry about with new software, is that your old computer may not work with it. So starts the domino effect..... especially when working with raw files. If Gimp and Paint still work, keep using those.
You have no idea how much I needed to watch this video I don't have a G9, but I do have a Lumix FZ80 and a Lumix LX10. I am beyond frustrated with uploading images into Lightroom, only to find that they must be uploaded as DNG's...and then I lose the ability to edit like I want to. I used the new "denoise" option in Lightroom, and after THREE HOURS AND 30 MINUTES, I ended up without a picture. The only thing that showed up were tiny, different colored squares. My question would be, if I edit my RAW images in camera and then upload them into Lightroom, will they still be DNG's or Jpegs? Thank you so much!
If you’re using the current version of LR then it should open up raw files from the cameras you mentioned. Even older versions of LR should work as those cameras have been around for awhile. Just make sure Adobe camera raw is up to date for whatever version you have. Check to make sure your software is up to date. If you edit “in camera” you get a jpg as a result. I’ll grab my Dng tutorial and add it in another comment.

Any idea if you shoot the high rez mode ( I assume I can use low iso) and expose to keep the highlights and lift the shadows say 5 stops- assuming you later down rez to maybe 20 meg - is the noise in the shadows less than would have been otherwise possible? Am wondering relative to real estate interiors and if high rez and shadow lift would be superior to hdr via light room enfuse. Thanks!
That's something you should test for yourself. 5 stops is a lot. Might be easier to shoot in-camera HDR. Are these for MLS listings? RE photos are used so small on the MLS websites, why would you want to shoot in High Rez mode for those? Seems a bit of overkill to me on the resolution. If they are for billboard ads, that's a different story. But you didn't say what the final product was for these photos. But again, you'd have to test this yourself to see where you land. Everyone has different standards and ideas of how photos should look.
The purpose of using high rez would be to obtain a large file to raise shadows as many stops as possible and then since the file is so large that when it is down sampled one can look to see if one can trade resolution for noise reduction at some point in the process so that the images would in effect have a greater dynamic range and acceptable noise levels in the final smaller files delivered -one size for print and another for on-line. I would think this might be superior to using an HDR image from which to produce mls sized and print sized images.
Another simpler option may be to light it, instead of relying on HDR or using HUGE files. Pack a small battery operated LED or flash. That's what I'd do instead of messing with the HUGE files. In my opinion that's overkill for house photos. You'll spend way too much time on the computer, for the return in investment. But do some tests and see what results are best for you. Have you tried iDynamic settings? That's what I use when I want to boost my shadows. What an amazing camera... I wish the potential G90/95 is of a similar size to G80/85 so I can upgrade my hobbyist G6 down the line :) Edit: it turns out the G7 was the first Lumix camera to have this feature
Love your videos and my G9 I sometimes shoot in raw and jpeg at the same time. Could you tell me if I changed my raw file to jpeg in camera without any changes to raw file would it be same quality as the jpeg file?
Hi William, That is something you can test for yourself! One thing to note is that your JPG edits (all those settings like WB, Exposure, Photo Style, iDyanmic, etc) will not likely match your RAW edit. Because when you shoot raw you have to do all that in post processing. So the image quality may be the same, but how it looks will likely be very different. Let me know how your tests go!
Marlene, I experience a strange situation from time to time my Lumix cameras will NOT let me edit my RAW files. It says "This picture cannot be used. " I can't figure out why it is doing this. Do you know?
According to page 240 of the pdf camera manual, if you use Ex Tele Conv. there are some issues. The link to the camera manual is in the video description. There may be other settings that limit your processing ability as well but I haven't experienced them.
Hi Marlene. I usually shoot jpeg with my G85 and that’s just fine for social media. I also use Snapseed, a wonderful programme, and I’m fine with that too. But when downloading a processed photo to Facebook it loses sharpness which I hate. Up till now I did not find any way to get my photos on Facebook without losing sharpness. Do you know any solution for that problem? Btw...I always upload to Facebook with my IPad mini, because that works much easier (uploading via WiFi) than reworking my files on my IMac. This video is already very informative (as always) and thanks for that in advance.
The problem likely lies with facebook compression. Not your camera. And if your images are low res, they may look less sharp. So double check that your resolution is high enough. Facebook has guidelines on that and they vary depending on if it's a post photo, an ad or a cover photo. I usually aim for 1500 pixels on the long side of the image for regular posts. Cover photos are usually needed at higher resolution. Also make sure that your iPad is not lowering the compression quality before uploading.
Another quick point is that when you transfer your photos to the iPad from your Lumix, you can specify the size and quality. Make sure you're sending at least a medium jpg to the iPad before getting into Snapseed. (BTW I use Snapseed too and I love it.)
I'm pretty sure you have to process one frame at a time, just like when you're processing raw files on a computer. But on a computer you can batch process too. I haven't tried batching raw files in the G9, but I don't shoot many raw files in burst mode. Usually I shoot jpgs as you can get more per burst. You can test that for yourself very easily though. Let me know!
No video on that process, but I edit my videos using Final Cut Pro and upload to RU-vid after that. There are other video editing apps out there but I’m no expert on that stuff.
It is difficult to see all details from the small camera display. Is there any way to see the raw image in real time from the G9 to a pc or an ipad in other to adjust properly the image?
Yes it's too small and not really practical. And no, you can't do what you're thinking. Unless you shoot tethered to a computer. And if you have an iPad I think it would be easier to just copy the photos to your iPad (or computer) using a card reader or the Lumix sync app. Or shoot JPGs and you won't have to edit raw files in the camera or the computer. It's kind of a weird feature.
Thank you for this interesting video. Is there an option for bulk processing? This would be very useful, as my editors Apple Fotos and Lightroom cc cloud do not allow this, and I do not want to switch to Lightroom classic.
Thank you for your question, Bodo. I've scoured the advanced owners manual for the G9, and don't believe there is an option for bulk processing. I'm not surprised. That would really put immense pressure on this camera's processor. Do either of those apps allow copying and pasting your edit settings from one photo to the next? I doubt Apple does, but what about LR?

@@tomtafola4518 I'm sure it can shoot raw. You've probably got your mode dial set on iA. Put your mode dial into M,S,A or P. Go into your menu (usually on the first page) and choose "Quality" Then choose RAW. I don't own this particular camera mode, but I suggest you Download the PDF owner's manual for your camera for all the details of every function. You can get that from the Panasonic website.
Can you do this while seeing it say connected to your tablet for seeing more correct colors? It’s in the shop for repairs right now so I cannot try. Maybe my GX85 can do it?
Does the GX85 have in-camera raw editing? I haven't tried that yet. You can do many things when connected via WiFi. Let me know if it works, as I don't have a GX85.
Can anybody explain please.. when i choose for shooting raw+jpeg.. this means 2 different pictures? Together or really 2 different pictures.. so if 2 different pictures where can i find out the raw file.. i want original raw and jpeg for backup ? I use g85
Two different pictures. One is raw the other is a developed jpg. Go to your file list on your memory card and you will see both files. They will have the same file number but one will have a JPG extension and the other will have a RW2 extension. Hope that helps.
@@ImageMaven oh thank verry much i have never seen that was 2 files when i looked my photos on the camera.. i tryed yet and i see 2 files on my sd card thank you for explaination.
