Lumix GH4 + Meike 3.5mm Fisheye and other Affordable HD Fisheye Setup Review

1080p on the GH4 gives the most vertical space on the frame due to the crop factor of that camera. 4K uses even less of the sensor height (as well as needing a ton of light). Beagle has the most efficient setup with the GH4 using a Metabones XL 0.64x speedbooster and the Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 HD Fisheye Lens with Removeable Hood. You can go either the Canon or Nikon route for those. The Viltrox 0.71x speedbooster will save you money and is a close second to the Metabones speedbooster. Another benefit of the speedbooster will be gaining an extra stop of light (which we all know how MFT sensor struggles in low light). The Rokinon 8mm Fisheye adapted will also make it so your camera grip will no longer be in frame and you won't have to crop and lose pixels in post. Overall a solid video. Shows that skateboarding can be shot with older/affordable cameras/lenses. Your GH4/Meike 3.5mm combo should be a go-to for people on a budget or just starting out filming/editing.

The GH4 is much sharper and resolves more detail, even just in 1080P, than the 5D or at least the MKII and III, which are very soft, especially on large screens. The G7 has pretty similar video specs to the GH4 and I actually bought a bunch of them for a school where I used to teach. Personally, I use Sony, but it's mostly because Panasonic is laking in the sub-$10K large-sensor video camera market, whereas Sony had the FS7 and FS5 before the EVA1, which was late to the game and still a bit expensive. Still, I like the Panasonic out of the box "look" much better than Sony. I actually wish I had gotten a GH4/5 as a b-cam to my FS5 instead of the A6300, which overheats, has poor battery life, and looks really soft in 60P. However, now with COVID, most of the stuff I work on is people shooting themselves with their phones.

Thanks for your videos with this lens! I'm a complete amateur, don't even have a laptop. Just point and shoot, then link the clips together on my phone. But it's fine for just capturing my friends skate. I notice the vignette on my footage is sometimes quite orange, and the orange bit will move around. Guess it's the light reflecting off the plastic rim of the lens or something. And some footage I've seen the vignette looks slightly soft/blue. But if you watch J M Sneep's videos with this lens, the vignette is super sharp and black. Wonder how he gets that.

I was looking at the GH4 and the Meike fisheye and looked it up on RU-vid. Low and behold I stumbled upon your videos and after watching, I bought this set up right quick. Im stoked I got the Sony HXR NX100 for long lens and the Gh4 for fisheye

I've been using the same setup for like a month now and I love it, but the only problem has been getting used to how light it is so the footy is a lil more shaky than usual. Do you have a handle or cage that you'd recommend?

Will the meike 3.5 work with a gh3 and give the same look? Obviously without 4K

I'm still about choose the Meike 6.5mm or the 3.5mm version. What's you thought about the Meike 6.5mm on the gh4/gh5? I have the gh5,+ viltrox 0.71 speed booster + walimex 8mm fisheye. I'm super happy with it, but I look to have also a lighter fisheye setup for run and gun circumstances. Cheers from Germany/Frankfurt am Main

Hi, thanks for this video and the other one with the Laowa 4mm. I'm currently hesitating a lot between those 2 fisheye, wich one would you recommand ? I saw your other comment about the camera body but this won't be a problem because my GX80 handle is really flat compared to the GH5. Is there a real difference between 3.5 and 4mm ? Or any other things that could help in my choice ? ( The price is not a problem I found both at the same)

I have a sony ax53 camcorder with an old opteka 58mm (the og version without blue vig) and I just ordered a couple more spacers so when I crop at 4:3 in post there’s still visible vignette. My sony films in 1080p 60fps and 4k 30fps just like your gh4. There’s probably no reason to upgrade right? Being able to film in 4:3 directly on the camera sounds so tempting😅🤦🏼‍♂️

One more question, is there any function you need to turn off so that the fisheye vig doesn't bounce around
