I'm excited to get both the GH7 and XLR adapter tomorrow. Davinci Resolve is much better at handling the audio than Premiere + Audition. Not sure how it works in Premiere but at least in Davinci as a final step on export you can Normalize the audio levels and get a near-perfect result. I think this combo is a game changer. I just sold my Zoom F6 recorder because I simply don't need it anymore. Having Timecode on the GH7 means if I really did need super pro audio i can break out my Zoom F8nPro and sync timecode over to the camera. I love how Lumix is changing the game!

Thanks for the comment! I'm sure you'll enjoy your GH7 and XLR adapter. 32-bit float saved me on my latest shoot -- the chef took the cover off a frying pan and condensed steam dripped back into the pan creating a lot of loud sizzling and popping. It would have totally clipped a 24-bit track, but I was able to bring it all back with 32-bit float. 😊 Everyone seems to love Davinci Resolve. I should probably start myself on that learning curve to move away from Adobe someday.

Wow! Thank you so much. And quite surprising to hear, actually. We never sound the way we hear ourselves, so I always cringe when I hear my own recorded voice 😅

one thing to take heed to is that you can still distort the SPL levels of the actual microphone , and that cant be saved, perfect example i tested it by recording a car's muffler revving and the shotgun mic i was using was distorted because of the level at the mic,

Good point. Still need to be careful about mic choice and placement.

Great job on this video. For too-quiet audio that's buried inside of ambient noise, you might get something usable with Adobe Audition's noise processing plugin -- the one where you first capture the noise and it then processes it out. Key word being "might." Sometimes the magic works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Thank you for the comment! Yes, I regularly use the Noise Reduction effect in Audition. It generally does a good job if you can capture a proper noise print for it to use. I've seen some demonstrations of boosting really quiet sounds in 32-bit float without extraneous noise, and it always seemed so impressive. After doing my own tests, I figure that it works best if you have 1) a really quiet recording space, and 2) good equipment with very minimal self noise. It can work, but maybe it needs to be done right.

Great video. Since the S5II just got the firmware update to be able to use this new adapter (despite no 32 bit float) I am just curious if the preamps were improved and are cleaner from the XLR1 adapter? It’s okay for condensers but could never plug a Shure SM7B (or any dynamic mic) into the original adapter and expect clean results without a preamp attached. Thanks!!

Hi. Thanks for stopping by. And great question! To be honest, I haven't done a direct comparison between the XLR1 and XLR2, but that could be a great comparison to do. I only have one dynamic mic. It's an old Heil Sound mic that I originally bought to use with an old Zoom H4n, but that was just too noisy to be usable. I should try it with the XLR1 and XLR2 adapters to see if there are any improvements with the new one.

@@HaveCameraNowWhat definitely would be interested in your testing. I think for most users (unless you have a GH7) there probably isn’t much of an upgrade between the XLR1 and the XLR2 adapter except for the 3.5mm jack. Unless of course the preamps are much cleaner than the original and can supply enough gain for dynamic mics with very little noise. I would say then it’s probably worth it even without 32 bit float.

Hi Daniel. Thanks again for the great question. I wanted to give you an answer, so I did some tests and you can find the results in this new video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RC6qtl_sqQY.html I hope this helps!

The new XLR unit needs to be usable on the GH5 II. I understand it would not be able to do 32 bit float, but it should be able to act similarly to the XLR-1

Agreed. I'm in no way affiliated with Panasonic, but I assume that they will add compatibility for the XLR2 adapter to other cameras with firmware updates where it is technically feasible. Just need to give them a bit more time.

Between the GH7 and the S5II-X, which workflow is better? Are the focus of the two similar???
@HaveCameraNowWhat
@HaveCameraNowWhat 2 месяца назад
If you're just using one or the other, I think the workflow is very similar, or even the same between the GH7 and S5IIX. They can be used in the same way, and they have a similar look. I've been mixing footage from the GH7 and two S5IIX cameras for cooking videos, and they go great together. The only troublesome part is when I have to mix audio from the two systems, because the GH7 is 32-bit float and the S5IIX is 24-bit, and they just behave differently on the timeline. For autofocus, I've left the GH7 on auto during these shoots and had no problems. I think they are very similar :)

is thes DMW-XLR2 compatible with other Lumix cameras than the GH7?
@HaveCameraNowWhat
@HaveCameraNowWhat 16 дней назад
As of now, no it is not. If you put it on another camera, the camera does not recognize that an XLR adapter is connected. Maybe Panasonic will at least add compatibility through firmware updates later, but doubtful if it will bring 32-bit float capability to the other cameras.

@@HaveCameraNowWhat thanks for the information! Yes they should just add support for the other Lumix cameras. (without 32-bit float)

Unfortunately it doesn't work. The camera does not recognize that there is an XLR adapter attached. Hopefully Panasonic resolves this with a future firmware update, even if they cannot add 32-bit float support. For now I'm holding onto my old XLR1 adapter for the cameras that cannot recognize the XLR2.
