Please keep comments appropriate for children-the video was simply made for my Pre K-1st grade students during the Covid shut-down. Glad y’all have enjoyed it!!
@pikoro I was wondering that myself. Let’s just hope that they tried to copy and paste a hyperlink in the comment, because that’s some sketchy nonsense 😆😆

@@2ndpartycrasher954 hey I found a dummy! Their pfp is feral normal animals basically. Furries are anthropomorphic meaning they look and act human. Get your terms straight before you go around insulting people for no apparent reason.
He was probably near the end of his life cycle! Luna moths are only adults for a week or so after the transition since they've no mouth. Glad you were gentle with the soft lil guy!
I thought they had a proboscis they use to slurp up tasty nectar.? I know there are fly and moth species which only eat in their larval state and come out of the pupae without mouthparts. But I didn't think it was the case with these moths. Or is it like with some species where its males that dont have mouthparts who die shortly after mating.?
Dragon empress competition between males can get pretty brutal, often ending with pretty nasty looking wing tears. It’s why you see a lot of butterflies and moths with torn wigs when you go to a butterfly house.
I've only seen 2. One was sadly smashed by a coworker that was of the destroy all insects mentality, but the other I woke up to one morning on my way out, it was resting on the wall right outside my front door. I hear they are common, but sightings are rare because they are nocturnal. If they're native to your area keep an eye out at night during their mating season, whenever that is.
@@Chef_Alpo I really dislike that people just hate insects so much. They're just little lads. 😢 But yeah, I did a little research and unfortunately I don't live in luna moth territory.
Another thing to tell from the antennae is that it is a male, the female moths have less furry antennae. Moths also do not fold their wings like butterflies (with a few exceptions), they keep them spread when standing just like that guy you found. I am glad you made this video, it helped me not to fear moths. I like Luna moths but I do not like hawk moths (moths that look like "arrows" or "jets" lol)
The fact that you think of your little ones with something little like this shows how much you care about teaching ! Teachers need way more appreciation and attention to their needs especially the good ones
That is in fact a male luna moth (antennaes are more bushy) he's in his last few moments of life. You are so blessed to have met one alive, the luna moth is my favorite insect of all time they seem to be rare to find alive. I only got to find one dead (found its wings). 😢 An old friend got to find one alive. I was jealous. After they come out of the cocoon, they only have 2 weeks to mate and then they die. They have no mouth. Rather strange, really. Extremely beautiful though. I think they're more beautiful than butterflies.
Antennae fluff isn't how you tell moths vs butterflies, though it's true moths usually have fluffy antennae & butterflies don't. The best way is to look at which way their wings go when not flying. Sticking straight up from the back? That's a butterfly. Laying down flat by the sides & covering the abdomen? That's a moth. Also good for you for taking the opportunity to teach the kids about moths instead of sticking to the curriculum! It's always good to be flexible & have room for an impromptu nature lesson. I'm sure the kids loved it :)
It's beautiful . Omg I love it's colour I kind of think that it's cute 🥰 The luna moth is pretty rare and unique And just purfect ❤️ ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Looks like his life is near to a close. He hopefully has performed his adult duties in his short adult life and has insured his contribution to a new generation
WHAT a specimen to mount when it dies! Actually, the antennae aren’t always an indicator of a moth. Butterflies tend to fold their wings vertically up over their backs. Moths tend to hold their wings in a tent-like fashion that hides the abdomen. Butterflies are typically larger and have more colorful patterns on their wings. Moths are typically smaller with drab-colored wings.
Thank you for taking the time to help these seemingly "insignificant" creatures. Life is precious even when it resides in such a small avatar. I also take home and nurse injured butterflies, moths or any other animal in need.
Don’t feel bad if it dies, they only live for a week or so. But make sure that little guy stays safe! They dont eat because they don’t have mouths, so they end up resorting to what they ate as a caterpillar. Which leads them to most likely starve. Truly sad, but they are a pretty sight to see!
It really does suck that these magnificent creatures are born without mouths. They are truly beautiful moths. Im hoping they don’t go extinct. Maybe billions of years later they might evolutionize to have mouths. Btw I’m pretty sure evolutionize isn’t a real word XD
