Subaru: "Don't touch the command prompt!" Me: _laughs in ZSH on Pop!_OS_ Seriously though, command prompt is a lot like the breaker switch in your residence. It's valuable to know how things operate and it can be necessary to go in there and reset a breaker, but you don't want to go in there without knowing what to do or how to fix it if it does go bad. Also: Kanzaki Hiro (Luna's artist) was in the chat at that time too and said (scuffed Google Translate incoming) if you mess with the registry you may not be able to start [the computer]. This is also good advice.

To be fair, you can use the command prompt without seriously risking breaking your computer. Linux users are used to using the terminal for a lot of power user stuff. Then again, I've always had a frustrating time using the command prompt in Windows. Even when using the PowerShell, for some reason, it just never works on the get go. With Linux, they'll give you freedom to use it, install applications and configure your computer with much ease.
@YawnMK1
@YawnMK1 2 года назад
Well on windows it has a lot of "lets try and make sure the user has at least a remote idea what he/she is doing" safety mechanisms, while on linux its assumed that the user knows, and doesnt put hurdles. I learned to use computers on DOS and windows 3.1, so i am used and confident about using command line instructions on console/terminal environments. On win10 a lot of the functionality of CMD was migrated to powershell, AND powershell uses a non-intuitive, diferent sintax than CMD, so its annoying to learn, but once you get the hang of it, its a very, very powerful tool.
@YawnMK1
@YawnMK1 2 года назад
Addendum: there are a lot of youtube tutorials on how to "fix" random problems that lead the user to "open CMD and type this, then press enter". That's the risk, because the user may be inputing malicious instructions without knowing. Btw, Thats what Subaru was doing: following internet-found instructions that had her typing commands on cmd!
@Adenybaloi
@Adenybaloi 2 года назад
@@YawnMK1 that is true. In fact, recently, there have been a lot of malware spread around, especially on emails, in which you'll open the attachments and it will input prompt commands that gives privileges to some malicious malware and screw up the computer. In all honesty, I have no idea what guide Subaru was reading, but I will say that for non-power users, it's probably safer to not use the command prompt or the PowerShell, although I do wish one day it becomes more mature and accessible. I've reformated USB drives using the command prompt and it's very useful for that.

Command prompt is just like scalpel. You can fix almost everything wrong with your body using scalpel, but cutting the wrong things can give you an even bigger trouble than what you're trying to fix. This is why scalpel is best given to the doctors to handle, a professional. Don't play around with scalpel. I used command prompt only when I have found a youtube tutorial of how to do that, and followed it to the T.

Command prompt is not really anything scary lol It's more or less just using the computer without a graphical interface. And if you don't know how to spell things out correctly it just gives errors (ie nothing happens), you actually need to know something to mess things up and even then you'd need to open the window with admin rights.

Man, Subaru was so off track with this across the board, but this stuck out to me: "Even elementary schoolers would use it." (speaking of CMD) No, dear. Most people will throw an absolute fit if you even suggest they have to use it. That said, I'm not sure exactly how dangerous Subaru could be in CMD. For one, you kinda need to at least know enough to input proper commands before you can be dangerous. The odds are practically zero that you would accidentally type `rm "All My Important Stuff"` or `format C:` with zero prior knowledge. Also, I thought MS had limited CMD substantially since the MS-DOS days. I'm not even sure you can do something like `format c:` anymore. I could be totally wrong on that part though, as I don't use Windows much these days.
