We visit Lunaz design to find out more about their bespoke electric vehicles which aim to further the legacies of the most beautiful cars in the world. Timeless aesthetics of classic cars propelled by an all electric powertrain. It's an interesting and sometimes contentious topic which we were keen to explore.
The cars in question include the Rolls Royce Phantom V, Jaguar XK120's, S1, S2 and S3 (1955-1965) Bentley Continental in both coupé and four-door ‘Flying Spur’ variants and Classic Range Rovers.
What do you think about what Lunaz are doing? Is this furthering the legacies of these beautiful machines?

Lucky enough to pop by Lunaz some 14 months ago and meet David and his co founder Jonathon. David took me out in the prototype XK120 and it really was something. From both its performance, fit and finish. I own several 60's period Jaguars so I'm used to how they drive, feel and smell - but was still taken with David and Johns vision and achievement.

Love the Rolls Royces’ that have been converted. The Phantoms are always of interest and this technology is in alignment with those type of vehicles. I also adore the sliver over green Bentley you drove. It’s wonderful to see Lunaz branch out into service vehicles like garbage compactors etc, another ideal vehicle for this technology. Lunaz appears to be a good business model and the attention to detail is always going to be desirable to people who like that sort of thing. I wish Lunaz success in all their ventures. It’s particularly impressive to see such a young, well spoken and obviously intelligent man at the forefront of such a company. Very impressive. Any company that has such a clean, tidy workshop is also attractive to me. Love it, and if I suddenly come into that kind of money, I wii be knocking on the door for that two tone Bentley Continental, I want it sooo bad ! Good video, well shot and great interview by the way. It’s easy to be taken by the story, but I wanted to also offer some words of encouragement to the crew on the video. Well done all.

He's so right - the DB5 may be the Bond Aston, but the DB6 is a better and more beautiful car! I just wish he would do a less custom/remastering alternative which could be used in some lovely - but not as ultimately valuable/collectable - cars that ordinary people might own. For example, an old DB9 or Rapide S is not a bad car to own... But to convert one to electric, perhaps with modular battery capacity, would be a great way to keep it on the road as the powertrain deteriorates over the years or as legislation forces ICE power off the roads!

Fascinating to see how much goes into these cars - you wouldn't know it purely from social media. As much as we all love the original engines in these things, the reality is they often spend more time off the road than on it - and when they are rarely driven they break down more because of it. Some competitors retain the ability to put the ICE back in, though in reality for these sorts of cars I can't ever imagine that happening so it's somewhat pointless. Sports cars are a more difficult concept, given half the fun for the classics is the sound. Just don't go full everatti and stick a speaker in the boot.

A fascinating video. They are certainly both an innovative company, as well as one that maintains the craftsmanship of these lovely classic cars. Perhaps it doesn’t matter, but should the electric drivetrain versions of the classics still be considered as a Rolls Royce, a Bentley, a Jaguar or an Aston Martin? I wonder whether the original makers have a view on this point? Maybe they should be badged as ‘Lunaz’ recreations?

Seriously desirable these things. I definitely see the appeal! However, I'm afraid a conversion like this must create a huge amount of indirect emissions at the build stage (i.e. a 80 kWh battery) that a car like this, with likely very limited use, will take ages (if ever) to recoup in clean running compared to keeping the hugely dirty original powertrain. Would be interesting to hear Lunaz' take on this aspect

Is Lunaz goal to recoup the reengineering emissions on clean running, or just to make a product people enjoy? These are toys, no one is saying a car with "interior marble" is a practical endeavor

I too would go for the RR and an early jaguar 120-150. I am very impressed with Lunaz and their mission. I'd like to work there. Question will arrive someday about the lifespan of the rechargeable batteries. At what point do the batteries become "end of life"?? Not to be ridiculous but how do you dispose of a dead battery? Yes, they are recycled, but how is that achieved without zero impact environmentally? Switching from fossil fuels to electric will increase mining for the manufacturing of batteries. What is that impact? Keep up the good work Lunaz!

I can really see the appeal of this for an old Rolls where the engine wasn't the core of the experience. The goal was to woft around in silent luxury. I can see that the electric power train would work with this.

The idea itself is nice and they deliver a beautiful job, but there is also what we call 'heritage'. If you convert a car of which thousands were made ( like the Range Rover) into an electric vehicle no one will care. However , when there is a model of a RR, Bentley or AM, of which literally a hand full were made ( and also still matching numbers) - as an owner I believe it's your responsibility to preserve it by keeping it as original as possible. Not preserve it by changing it into today's standard. Otherwise I might as well convert a beautiful crafted Swiss mechanical watch into a smart watch. Of course running cost will be less and it will tell time much better... but the whole mechanical aspect (its soul) and it's history will be lost. And I believe its a shame if this part of history ( for these very rare cars) will be lost. I'm really curious what happens with all the engines which are taken out of these cars? A clearly the car owners no longer want them...
