Electric vehicle converter Lunaz is on a mission to breathe new life into old vehicles. Having started with some of the most luxury classic cars such as Rolls Royce, Jaguar and Bentley - it's now adding electric rubbish trucks to its repertoire. We visited the facility in Silverstone to find out if the electric rubbish trucks are getting the same luxury star treatment.

Renovating used commercial vehicles & turning them into EV's is the perfect circular industry. Perfect sense. Way better than actually scrapping, or moving to another less strict country. Reuse recycle amazing stuff!

Excellent! Repurposing/reusing is much better than recycling back to steel plate ready to push back through the new-build factories. Also, given bin trucks are typically doing 1-2mpg, and operate right where people live, they are exactly the right point to start to make a noticeable difference. Well done! 👍

Lunaz seem to have their business head on! (Apart from “recycling” originally very expensive trucks at apparently a lower price than a new one, the 11 day turn round also sounds a lot more attractive than maybe waiting (a year? Eighteen months? 🤔) for a brand new truck to arrive! 👍👍👍

Thanks for this. I was getting a bit depressed about England not being a manufacturer anymore. We still have a way to go but the next challenge is to convince the Eton-educated toffs who run this country that engineering and manufacturing is these days more important than Imperialism and moving money around the world for no real tangible advantage. Moving a number from one account to another is not adding value, but those people have no idea about real value.
@DavidKnowles0
@DavidKnowles0 2 года назад
One of the chief backers is David Beckham an may be that the hope for this country, people from working class background who become rich finally invest in building companies instead of property and share portfolios. Personally I back Arrival floatation and I will first in line to back Britishvolt when it floats. Airlander is rumour to working on a stock floatation. An that another hope, that platforms like 212 and the idea of SPACs will allow more normal people to invest in these type of companies ourselves, instead of relying on the toffs to do it.

The most inspirational video I have seen for a long time and has taken my mind completely off the worlds woes. It would be great if Lunaz could open up at the weekends and take tours around their plant. perhaps Fully Charged who seem to be great at this sort of thing could organise a few weekend tours at other significant sites like the National Grid control centre. I really am almost clinically depressed about the state of the world and a trip to lunaz would cheer me (and a lot of friends) up enormously.

I love everything about this. This type of thing is long overdue. All respect to the startups like Arrival that are creating whole new vehicles, but this type of conversion feels like it could have been kicked in to high gear 5 years ago if the incentives had been there. Maybe not for garbage trucks, but certainly for delivery trucks and other medium service vehicles. It might have been a much quicker path to just getting EV vehicles out on the road.

They are sooooo quiet and no diesel pollution.
@dougwedel9484

One of the biggest problems with refuse trucks is how loud they are, when working at night is more common. A silent or at least quiet truck at night is perfect for these trucks. Add proximity sensors and some kind of anti crash software and you have a massively improved work vehicle. The dustbin truck drivers do amazing work, steering enormous vehicles into the tightest corners and back lanes that most people are hesitant to drive their car into. It sounds reasonable to set up the batteries so they can be charged with 2 or more chargers at the same time, to speed up the fill-up.

As someone who is an avid watcher of the Pakistani Truck Channel, I see a lot of the same spirit here. Take something old and worn, strip it down, and build it back up in a better fit for its purpose than it was when new. These may have a bit better fit-and-finish, but nothing beats custom paintwork. Many of the garbage trucks in my municipality have been replaced with CNG models in the last 10 years, hopefully they'll be electric 10 years from now.

Absolutely top notch ideas. Wish you were doing that here in the States. What surprised me is that you have multiple people in a truck emptying your dust bins. In my area, we have one man per truck who never gets out of the truck. Grabbers on the side of the truck pick up the bin and dump it in the top of the truck. Much cheaper and faster. The old fill from the back trucks have become rare.

I am so so pleased to hear their business model and ethics of refurbishing an already existing product; but not only that, improving and specialising modification based on the locality of its use and the needs of the operators using it every day. This is certainly so much better and produces less of a carbon footprint than recycling the old vehicle and making a completely new one from scratch. I do agree that Tesla and Rimec of course do wonderful things on the performance side, but I am so glad to hear that essential service vehicle are being brought into the carbon neutral age as well. I wish he would've answered Roberts question 12:00 "Are all the hydraulic systems powered from the OG diesel engine or was it a separate system" and making trucks that cater to a specific route is a bad idea because it means they aren't very flexible, otherwise a good project.
@danielrose1392
@danielrose1392 2 года назад
They are not really building trucks for individual routes but instead evaluating the needs of the specific municipality. Take my local municipality, two weekly routes are above 150km, three between 50km and 100km and all others usually stay below 50km. Why equip all with large batteries when they would end up mostly unused? About the pump: The answer was probably too complex. Just for the press shown in the video: You got three options which range from mechanical driven pumps with hydraulic accumulators to fully electrified systems. When retrofitting to EV the press also has to be retrofitted to an electric pump, but that's an easy off the shelf upgrade in most situations. By observing trucks you can usually tell the system: - Those with accumulators usually have enough power to lift bins without increasing rpm, but need to increase the engine rpm for garbage compression every few bins. - Those with electrical pumps do all keeping the engine at idle rpm. At least in my area, these are the most trucks.
@capitalinventor4823
@capitalinventor4823 2 года назад
Roberts next asked if they would add pumps and the reply was that the company keeps things as light as possible to keep costs down. If you read between the lines you can tell that the pumps, along with as much as everything else, gets reused. The pumps would have been powered via the old Diesel engine and after the refurb they will be powered via from the batteries.
@capitalinventor4823
@capitalinventor4823 2 года назад
@@danielrose1392 One would want at least a couple of spare trucks with larger batteries to be capable of doing the longer distance routes or routes with lots of hills. If one only had the exact number of truck with the larger batteries as the number of routes requiring them then if any of the trucks had a problem there would be no replacement for it. Just because the trucks are electric vehicles doesn't mean that they will never break down. There could be problems with the hydraulics, a flat tire, it could be involved in a traffic accident, or the contents in the back could catch fire (something that seems to happen about once every year or two in my city from people putting dangerous goods in their garbage). The other year in my city one of the companies contracted to pick up the garbage and recycling in two suburbs lost six trucks when a fire broke out in the building the trucks were stored in. They were sending out trucks for a second shift (I don't know if the people were replaced but they probably were). It took them almost a year to recover. Having trucks with different capabilities would have made their scheduling ability even worse. Imagine if all of their trucks with larger batteries had been lost, something possible if they had different chargers and those were in one area. I agree that having the extra batteries in all of the trucks is wasteful but there is a balance. It also depends on how easy or difficult it is to install and remove extra batteries.

Love this idea of refurbishing and refitting these working vehicles, and to BEV to cap it off. Reminds me of the military using the same aircraft for decades and they just retrofit and refurbish along the way as needed.♻

I have to say I hate council collection bins. I hate using them. I hate having them sit around. I hate putting them out. I hate the noisy stinky trucks. I hate getting the bins back in. I hate how filthy most people let their bins get putting goodness knows what in all mixed together. The whole rubbish situation is rubbish. Making the trucks better is a significant improvement. I would like something better than the bins themselves though. I’m not sure what. But something

Now, more than ever, I notice the noise and the smell of buses and trucks rumbling all around me where I live and wonder when we'll see something like this company doing similar work here in Montreal. We certainly need it given the crazy amount of road and infrastructure work happening these past few years and for the foreseeable future.

Great episode. The “longer charge time” to be “kinder to the battery” made me wonder if Lunaz et al. mentioned the concept of swappable batteries in the commercial trucks/lorries. Also, it seems that the concept of modularity was glazed over in favor of personalization. As technology advances, the commercial side of electrifying these trucks will fall short if they must “strip it to bare metal” each time they work on them. Fantastic channel. Kudos to you.

A word of caution for Lunaz: I was at a business that had won a contract to install optional equipment onto an existing fleet of rubbish trucks in the US. The work was rather extensive and required the trucks to be on-site for at least a full day. The facility that was doing this work became overrun with rats that escaped from every nook and cranny on the trucks once work disturbed the homes they had made there. Forewarned is forearmed.

The cost of these vehicles makes it worth trying to upgrade them - presumably that would never work for ordinary cars.
