The Eastern Gulf of Maine Sentinel Survey has been collecting information on Atlantic cod and other ground fish in 5,000 square miles of our coastal shelf for over a decade. In this video, the Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries' Chief Scientist, Carla Guenther, and Collaborative Research Specialist, Pat Shepard, along with Doctoral candidate, Robyn Linner from Dr. Yong Chen’s lab at Stony Brook University take a look at the original hypothesis and history of the Sentinel Survey followed by the most recent findings from the survey and biological samples collected from hook-and-line caught fish. The project is a collaboration between commercial fishermen and many scientific partners from around the region. It aims to answer questions about stock structure and recovery, diet, and life history in an area not well sampled by traditional survey programs.
