Question by Patient:
Is Lung Cancer Genetic? What are the tests to detect it and how to prevent it?
Reply by Doctor Sandeep,
I can understand why you are asking this question. Probably you have someone in your family who has develop Lung Cancer. The most common cause of Lung Cancer is tobacco smoking. Barring this all other cause is minor till date there is no single gene hat is discovered that is transmitted in the families that can cause Lung Cancer. So as such Lung Cancer is not hereditary but it is caused by gene damage or damage to the genetic or the DNA of the person and the dosage is caused by smoking of the person. So as such we have understood that it is not transmitted from parents to children but there are families where Lung Cancer is common, that is probably because of the individual familial habits, it is possible or there could be many other environmental causes in the geography where they are living but this cannot be called as a hereditary cancer, is there is a genetic test required for this? As of now No, because there are no known genes, so there is no need to look for this. So whatever we do will be in a setting of research. Having said that it is very important to understand one thing that in a cluster that is in a family if there are multiple people with cancer like say 3 people having similar different cabers or different cancers then it is indicated to perform a genetic testing that is called as Germline Mutation Testing. In this test, sample which could be from the mouth or sample of blood which is taken and the DNA that is taken from the blood sample or any other sample is tested and they look for nay DNA damage to look for the possible causes of cancer. Definitely this test is indicated if there are multiple people in the family with similar or dissimilar cancers. The key factor of prevention as of today is to stop smoking. So if you stop smoking or if any smoker stops smoking then automatically the risk of Lung Cancer significantly comes down because 70% of Lung Cancer are related to smoking.
