Different type of acne and treatment. When to see a dermatologist? Well acne is a very common condition that affects all kind of ages and people. Knowing different types of acne can help you in having effective treatment acne it's a chronic inflammatory condition of the sebaceous gland that is oil glands in your skin and also involves hair follicle. It is most commonly due to combination of different factors like there is over production of oil, dead skin cells, bacteria, stress, hormones and diet and certain skincare products which can all trigger acne. So did you know that there are different types of acne? Blackheads and white heads these are non-inflammatory acne these occur when the pore becomes blocked with dead skin cells and excessive oil. And now when the bacteria is involved and there is inflammation in these clogged pores it can lead to inflammatory acne leading to papules and pustules. So there will be redness swelling tenderness and pus involved sometimes when the inflammation go out of control then it can lead to nodules and cystic acne which is a severe form of acne. Nodules are not typically seen over the skin they can be felt and cystic acne is a much severe form of acne. Now all this lesion can lead to post-inflammation pigmentation and scars which can be a permanent side effect. Acne vulgaris is the most common presentation that is seen in most of the patients this can happen due to various kind of reasons like if it's in the forehead. It is most commonly due to excessive oiling of the scalp or dandruff. When it happens on the lower face or jaw line then most commonly it is due to hormonal disturbances. Again there is difference in the severity of acne from person to person. Some patients do present with just a mild acne just with the comedones that is whiteheads and blackheads. But some patients do present with all kinds of lesions that is they have whiteheads, blackheads, nodules, cystic acne. So the severity can vary from one person to another person. So sometimes when the patient has just the whiteheads and blackheads. It is very easily treatable and when the patient is having just whiteheads and blackheads that is a mild acne sometimes you can try using over-the-counter medications like containing salicylic acid benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, benzol peroxide or mild retinoids which will help with the whiteheads and blackheads. If you are having just a few papules and pustules. You can try over the counter medications like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoids or antibiotics containing clindamycin. But even after using these medications if you're still having breakouts probably you will need a prescription based medications oral antibiotics and retinoids. So always consult a dermatologist if the acne is stubborn. But if you are someone who is suffering from nodules cystic acne always consult a dermatologist because these type of acne always leads to more scarring and damages your face more than other kind of acne. At times we often recommend patients to go for chemical peel or laser to reduce the burden of medications and also to fasten up the process of healing it's always best to consult a dermatologist if you're having severe acne because sometimes hormonal imbalance and all these factors need to be assessed and treated. Acne can feel like a uphill battle but understanding your different types of acne and the treatment is a significant step towards winning. Always remember that everyone's skin is unique and everyone react differently to different products and different products have different effects on different skin. Remember patience is key when treating the acne. It may take up to 4 to 8 weeks to see an improvement. So consistency is the key here.
