Always fancied Filey Brigg as a good lure fishing spot, and with the weather dead still for the week and clear water, I took my chance to give it a go!
Ayup Pal.Shame you blanked The brigg usualy throws something up,nice vid tho very 'down to earth' comentary :) . A wee safety tip for ya tho,,when accending or decending any ladders DO NOT hold the sides,if you lose your footing you will have no way of holding on , you will just slide down and rip your hands up ,,ALWAYS grab the rungs and you will be able to hold on in the event of any probs ..Take care buddy and tight lines.
I know you mean we’ll, unfortunately you are completely wrong as you never hold the rungs on a ladder because if it breaks in your hands, you’re going down. Watch Fred Dibnar climbing up those huge ladders and you’ll notice that he never ever holds the rungs! I was a heating engineer and I climbed up ladders, some very high onto high roofs to drop flue liners down chimneys and I was taught never to hold the rungs😉
I was always told to hold sides of wooden ladders because only 1 in 3 had a steel rid under them so if it snapped out only a 1 in 3 chance of a safety rod . Ps I still hate ladders walked back up the Brigg today .must keep telling myself don't look down.
I used to climb down not too bad then cast then retreat n stand under the rock behind, locals would say stand here with swell around their legs , no ta ide say ime alreyt here 😂😂
55 years since I fished the brigg and climbed the ladder that was there at the time. Keep the swearing in it showed how frightened of heights you were makes it authentic
Nice vid, reminds me of when I fished it only once ever 12 years back on hols. Amazing looking place, couldn't fail on lures. Bit more lively sea but not much more then a 3ft sea trout jumped in casting range after hrs of nothing. Same result as you after that moment of excitement. That green slippery death weed grows where fresh water outlets hit it, many times on my arse with tackle box emptied across the rocks as a kid ;-) thanks for posting!
Aha, that sounds like the sort of thing I would do, John! I'm looking forward to fishing it again, in fact it may even be a good spot overnight for a winter cod or 2.
From memory there's a rope already tied on. Plus I'd travel light with just a backpack and rods over my shoulder, just in case you need to make a quick getaway for some reason
It does mate, I've seen a big decline just from when I grew up fishing with my dad to now. Hopefully the wind farms will prevent trawlers coming in so close and create an artificial habitat for stocks to recover
So sad you did not catch, I know the Brig well and have seen cod caught in August on bait the part where all the lads were fishing at the end is the best spot and forms the edge of a very very deep hole. You can pretty much forget all your fancy lures there if your lure fishing there is only 1 lure you need the '' ABU Koster 28g in silver, has to be silver and has to be 28g. it is the perfect sprat immitation, the locals often combine it with a single teaser mackerel lure 6'' above the lure. combine and syncronise all this with the appearance of the sprat shoals the last 2 weeks of August and you will be in with the mackerel. float fishing there too on the edge of the rocks is good for coalie but again use a very deep sliding float system. you will also need to wade through shallow gullies there on the ebb so thigh waders are good or waterproof sandals and shorts
Try a float, bait up with mussel or squid or mackerel or better still peeler crab. Start at low water and work the ledges, more or less what you were doing, I used to love working those ledges with as many as 30 or so others. The drift on the flood is South Bound
Conditions were spot on but for lures better at high water down first ladder black hole corner but think since your vist ladder as washed away second ladder back green rock or to right gulley wash decent mark lure job I use a small red gill type eel on a following trace 1,5oz lead 20lb mono some decent pollock around brigg down end is more of a heavy gear bait fishing mark peeler crab squid lugworm etc for cod bigger the ebb the better down there must be flat calm risky spot if there’s any swell
Hey Callum! Lures should work well this time of year. I'd stick to simple metals and work different speeds/depths. Should be some good pollock around at depth and mackerel in the mid waters. If there are birds diving could be worth trying a surface popper for bass. But it's heavily populated with birds around that area so top water stuff could attract their attention too much. As always though, stay safe!! It's a venue where the swell can change at any minute, so make sure you have note of your escape routes and your gear is on your back or to hand to grab and go if necessary. No fish is worth the risk.
I've never really suffered badly from heights.. but then I got tinnitus.. and now I get vertical and I was recently walking on saltburn pier in nearly had to crawl off it. Salt lamp peers not even high but if you have suffered from tinnitus and vertigo then you know how distressing it can be. My point being, I know exactly how you felt walking down those ladders.. the only way you conquer your fear of heights is to just defeat it. It takes a lot of courage to do something your body is telling you not to do... Only just subscribe to the channel and I'm enjoy it.. I will be staying around. This is my normal RU-vid but I also have a fishing RU-vid that I've just started myself.. I won't plug it. I used to fish a lot when I was a teenager now I'm nearly 50 and just got back into lure and spinner fishing and I absolutely go mad for it but I have forgotten more than I ever knew about fishing.. yes, that is possible😂 fishing is relaxing it's why I do it even if I blank out on fishing.... I'm still out there with nature and that's all that matters. I do a lot of sea fishing and a lot of river fishing in Yorkshire North Yorkshire and the lake District . Keep up the good work and I am sure your channel will grow. I will be sticking around.
Omg mate honestly about 15 year ago i got caught out by the tide and couldn't walk back round and the only way back up was the ladder i was shaking like a shitting dog going up that ladder i was only 10 or something i was with my dad and his friend
Ever tried Anglesey, or Holyhead.Get Gulf Streaming.Tried to get my buddy into it as he is local, but he's reluctant.. Got a gammy leg. They've got some beasties. And they're Welsh! Best regards.
I grew up fishing Anglesey with my dad as a kid, and keen to get back over there. It's at least a 3hr one way drive though so takes a bit more planning. Speaking of which I am planning a road trip over there between Xmas and New year all being well 👍🏼
Invest in some fiiish black minnows, megabass spindleworms, evo bass sabre, top water lures like patchinko, chappy 100 and loads of others like sub surface shallow divers. The fiiish black minnows have a wonderfull wobble motion that makes it irresistible for bass 👍
Really enjoyed that video. Fascinating scenery, even if the fishing was a bucket of crap. That's the kind of place I'd check out myself. Try it again on a cooler overcast day.
I'm 68 year old woman and have been up and down ladder a few times and it scared the life out of me so won't be doing it again - but I said that the last time and the time before that and it's definitely better than the wobbly boulders!!
Good effort, got to be in it to win it don't forget, that box of soft plastics tho, looked more like sweets than lures, need to go with more natural colours, sandeely, with a few white and candy ones mixed in,also silver spools and minnows good luck, tight lines
Ha Ha, Yes Yes Yes! As I mentioned in another comment I am a climbing instructor. I've worked with military, in film, with SEN, one time dignitry; and even Royalty. What you did was; to experience, feel an understanding of risk (assess).... Accept and move on. Look back and recalibrate. Let it calm, take an alternate perspective. Challenge your previous acceptance... and try again. Self Talk is another pre-frontal cortex signal, it helps calm the reptilian 'Back Brain' from holding us in a Full Body Handcuff' (the wobbly knees etc), so well done on that. Respect mate. You did it. If ever you're near The Reach Climbing Wall, Woolwich... feel free to look me up. I'll set you up with a freebe, help you gain even more 'self confidence'. Some Thames fishing too; if you fancy... (and gotta admit, only caught an eel, my 'Bug Out' set up is light and seldom). Just a little bit further. m out
Cheers Matt, my problem is, I'm fine going up, it's down I struggle with! I remember getting stuck at the top of a climbing wall at peak2000, scrambled up real quick then couldn't lean back to abseil down 🤦🏻♂️
@@theawfulangler The Dignitary I mentioned was a Lord Mayor of The City of London. An Army mate asked if I would give her a practice abseil (rappel) before a sponsored gig she had to abseil for. It went well, she was a trooper, as you are. We can't always tell what's coming round the headland... but knowing yourself, and knowing you can better yourself when needed, or to take an alternate path ... that is wisdom, my friend. m out
Another fab video shame you blanked, I'm like yourself not keen on heights and I would be bricking it on the ladder. Myself and my m8 want to bait fish the Brigg but I would take the long walk round which for me is safer, only way I would go down the ladder is wearing an harness with a carabiner on it then I know I couldn't fall may sound daft but I like my feet on firm ground 👍
I don't blame you Michael! Yeah I fancy a bait session on the Brigg. The problem is it has to be flat flat calm otherwise swells can be a nuisance if you're trying to get set up on a spot. Not such an issue walking round with the lures
@@theawfulangler Hi m8 thanks for the reply I'll give the Brigg a go one day for the cod but I'll be happy taking the long walk round and been careful not to get cut off with the tide. Love your videos m8 keep them coming good luck on your next session wherever it may be 👍🎣🎣🎣
Great to see your vid and confirmation that the ladder is still there, I think there used to be 2 next to each other, one dodgy, one less so. Was last there about 25 years ago and we caught mackerel on feathers and pollock, coalfish and wrasse on lugworm. Would love to return, such a great spot!
2 ladders in place 50 yds appart also path on Filey side of the Brigg takes you all the way down bit rough but passable for this 68 Yr old today 39 Nov 2022
Reminds me of when I was 15 years old (55 years ago). A friend and myself took a rowing boat out from Bridlington to go jigging for mackerel. We caught so many the boat was sinking. Gave most away when we got back to the harbour as we had to get a train back to Hull with bags full of mackerel. I doubt you could catch mackerel in such numbers today.
Hi mate, the plastics looks spot on, you have a nice range of colours. Bright days bright colours, dull days dull colours. I know that sounds backwards but it’s true. Once you’ve casted let the lure hit the bottom and work it as close to the bottom as possible, snags are few and far between of that hook is nicked into the back of the lure. But I’d strongly recommend letting it hit the bottom first before starting to reel. All the best for next time mate. And well done on those ladders, I feel your pain, I’m the same 🤣
@@theawfulangler I’m heading to Isle of Portland (Portland Bill Lighthouse tomorrow (Wednesday and Thursday) if you fancy it mate. New territory for me!!
@@stevendavison4814 Just finishing editing the latest one. been away for a couple weeks and switched from windows to Macbook so its taken a bit of getting used to. Hopefully back to a video a week now.
Just stick with the soft plastics, try smaller lures , I've caught big Pollock on small lures , I make my own plastic lures so I can size them smaller and to suit smaller hooks , try half a plastic worm on a smaller hook or jig head , but it always helps to have a few spinners 😂
Yeah it seems a strange place, like a weirdly low amount of kelp. Usually in North Wales I'd do exactly as you said, small weedless stuff and bounce it through the kelp. Here it's more like just huge bald boulders
@@theawfulangler I live on the north coast of Ireland, hello lol have you tried making your own soft plastic lures ,??? It's dead easy and means you only lose 10p if you get caught in the weeds lol some of the plastic lures are expensive enough,
@rickybell2.056 I haven't! I struggle with time to go fishing so making my own gear isn't something I've played with much. To be honest I bought a bulk load of plastics off a guy who makes his own. And then usually keep my eye on the bargain buckets at tackle shops. Often there's a bag of plastic somethings in there for 50p or so 🤣
You're not the only one to ask that mate 🤣 I've spent a lot of time sussing spots out this last year. But now I'm coming back to the winter spots I found last year it's paying off. Hopefully next summer will ve a good one 👍🏼
Great video lots of interesting points for a new y lure fisherman. Can I ask how do you look after your lutes . After use I keep mine out of the storage box until fully dry but still the hooks rust badly ! What am I doing wrong . Cheers
There's a few ways to do it mate. Firstly, all my boxes have vent holes, to allow excess water to drain away. So after a session I'll rinse in fresh water and leave somewhere warm to dry. Some people wipe them dry after use, but if you're on a hot spot or swapping lures a lot that wastes time in my opinion. Some people keep used lures in a separate box until they're cleaned and dry, but that's extra stuff to carry around. Personally I don't think you will ever stop something corroding after you dunk them in salt water, so I always have fresh split rings and a mix of different sized trebles and if one looks a bit ropey I'll swap it out!
@@theawfulangler thanks for a great reply . Like you I use a vented box , wash in clean water and wait till dry before returning to the storage box . As you say salt water and metal not a good combination unless looking for a reason to buy more lures 😉 Keep up the great videos ✔️
For some reason I'm normally OK going up, it's down that I have the problem with 🤣 glad to know I wasn't the only one short of fish though! Its been pretty slow on there this year, seen some good reports this last week though
Well, seems that I am as good as you.... A box full of soft plastics that never catch anything LOL Think I would have been tempted to try a sandeel type lure as there were so many around that mark but then, well, I still would have blanked LOL
You know when you watch David Attenborough, and a pack of tuna are smashing sardines. I could throw a live sardine in to the mix, and it would be the only one that didn't get eaten 🤣
I've missed the odd rung and fallen off now and then, and so far never came off badly, so think that's helped with the confidence. 🤞🏼 it stays that way haha
@@theawfulangler I was in an amazing spot in Portugal. Just below where we were parked was a stunning rock mark. It look very "fishy"... No ladders, just some fairly wide crevaces to jump and a dodgy looking loose gravel path down. Yes, I looked at it a few times but the coward in me took over 🙂
Don't worry about that bud, you will be hard pushed to offend me 👍🏼 Is that the rule you go by then? I've caught bass in all conditions, not sure why I didn't think to try a top water lure. And tbh if you have seen some of the other vids, it doesn't take much light to force me in to a squint, so I've started wearing the sunnies a bit more often.
@@theawfulangler Yes sir, dusk and dawn are the best times for me in North Wales. The tide time doesn't seem to matter as much as the light. Surface lures is all I use these days even when the rock marks are choppy. I'm the same as you regarding the squint and have the bags to prove it 😂. The good thing about early morning fishing is that you're done and dusted before anyone appears.
I'm 100% with you on dusk and dawn! I do need to let go of the metals and work on using other stuff. I've got patchinkos etc but they always stay in the box as I default to the metals, they just cast better IMO. So if its too sunny for bass, what you fishing for, or do you just wait it out and fish later on?
@@theawfulangler Some nice high pressure weather coming this week with light winds. Give the Patchinko or other surface lures a go. Yes I wait out until dawn really and try match it to low tide. If I just want to get out I'll go to the beach for a couple of hours and sometimes get a Bass or 2 on freshly pumped Lugworm.
@@theawfulangler Blanked , had a couple of hours and the rain came in so retired to the van for a brew and a butty , of back down there to give it another go later . 🎣🎣 been eying up some places to fish from the the cliff tops .
@@theawfulangler bait fishing the bottom. Just set up again now and missed a good bite first cast of the cliff top at high tide . Hopefully I’ll winkle something out 😎.
Looks like the famous Black Hole mate unless I'm mistaken. Problem with lure fishing is that the pollack and mackerel are either there or not. I always had a float rod on the go, as well as the lures, with mussels as bait for the wrasse. Had some big ones. 4 or 5lb. And little pollack. But never blanked....except with the lure rod or when I used mackerel strip. I was broken by something huge once. Maybe a conger.
It seems to have been very quiet on the mackerel front this year so far, not that I target them to be honest, but I was surprised not to get a single hit from a pollack. Now I know the place a bit better next time I'll take some bait and a beach caster to sling out while lure fishing for sure!
I enjoyed that! Especially the commentary on the ladder. I have hooked a seagull on a lure before, it dived and took it as i cast, was fun playing it and unhooking it.
Cheers Jason, I thought people might be entertained by my shaky descent 😅 I hooked a Guillemot on the Isle of Skye which put up quite the fight, luckily it broke itself free before we had to handle it.
Chuck them metals out and let them sink and then slowly retrieve it works for me and you will catch on the drop also even before you start to reel in..my fav weight is 30g silver lure on a bright day...tight lines
