It was another stunning morning this week so i decided to try for a bass before work one day. The conditions weren’t great, with the sun beaming down, the temperature was already hitting 20 degrees at 6am. The sea was flat calm and crystal clear.
I started fishing with a couple of surface lures, hoping i could pick out a bass. After roughly an hour of repetitive casting, it soon became clear their were no bass around. I clipped on the savage gear gravity stick, this one being the paddletail and as i was slowly loosing hope of catching anything, i got hit by something fairly big.
Although i wasn’t able to catch the target species that morning i was happy to find this brute of a ballan wrasse which would be a new PB.

Thanks Henry. I do really like the gravity sticks, especially the paddle tails. Will be using them more often in the future.

well i that was not what i was expecting to see bravo dude what a awesome wrasse .. well worth getting out of bed for what a clonker that has to be the fish of the season so far ... its going to take a nice fish to beat that PB ... tight lines mate have fun and take care

Nice one Cal. Angling addicts website averages 5lbs 7oz for a Balkan. Was really thick though. Full of eggs maybe..push it to just under 6lbs buddy

Well done Cal, absolute stonker of a Wrasse. I enjoy your vids, cos they always get me thinking. I know some spots that hold decent numbers of Wrasse, so maybe something worth targeting if the Bass aren't around or aren't feeding 👍

@ Baz on the rocks Lure fishing for wrasse is mainly what i do, if the swell is too big then i throw a few bass lures instead . Sure you'll lose some gear, but those wrasse are usually very obliging and put up a great scrap on a 12-35 g fast action rod

I've definitely picked up a few tips from your videos. Went out bassing last night with a few of us for a couple hours and managed 11 bass total and 4 for me. Nothing big but still great fun.

What a lovely wrasse mate !! It looks a really spot there bud. I think you definitely need to get a kayak to explore those outer heads matey for sure. Especially if I bring mine over for a weekend il need a guide lol. Loving the videos bud! Tight lines

Yeah you could target all sorts from a kayak round there. I see the odd person kayak fishing round there but not that often. There are loads of other places like that to fish from a kayak. If you ever come over I’ll show you some spots. Cheers 👍🏼

I have a gopro 9 now yeah. It’s a lot better quality then my gopro 7. That was only in 1080p too, can film in 4K but it uses a ton of data.

Nice chunky rock pig chap! Sods law exaclty the same thing happened to me. Mine was 57cm,taken on a sexy impact pin tail. I still curse my stupidity for not taking my scales with me on that trip and i still wonder to this day how much it weighed. 😭😣🤔

Same here! I had two lunkers among some smaller ones the other week, a 50cm and 51cm. No scales with me.

Different lures will work better in different locations/countries. Bass will eat pretty much anything if they’re hungry. I’m sure red is a great colour to use yeah, I don’t use it much myself though.

Yeah for sure. If you can find the right spot with a bit of cover for the bass then you can catch them on very still days. Also very early morning or late evening can be good on days like that.

I actually got them about 3 years ago from B&Q 😂 They’re unbranded cheap things but have turned out to be great. Dwalt actually make good fingerless gloves too
