Thanks for this post. It’s one of the best I’ve seen of Lush. I appreciate seeing the band at this stage and seeing them interviewed as a band rather than just Miki and Emma. I think Lush had true greatness that was kind of messed with by an idiot manager and the British music press. I mean, to call them “Shoegaze” derisively is rather absurd when they could rock like hell. Same with Ride. I saw both bands live in Portland and they freaking rocked!
Miki said in another interview the Chris was not someone who had to learn his instrument. He was an excellent drummer. She said they were all trying to catch up to his level. I was always impressed that the ladies didn’t think they were great musicians. Maybe they got some help with the songwriting? Because the songs have some really clever and interesting changes and orchestration.
That's why i'm astonished by this band 'cause they wrote unusual stuff without any prior experience and they managed to make It sound good also! Love them so much
You don't need to be proficient at guitar to come up with interesting chord progressions; really most of their music consist of rather basic guitar technique, lots of repetitive chord strumming occasionally accompanied by a simple lead line. The chords/song structures make up for it though.
Good lawd… if I’d known of Lush and Miki back in the day i would have not only followed the group but pursued Miki, what an absolute babe and only a few months older than i. Oh, Miki 🥰
No. I read many recent interviewes of Emma and Miki. Miki has a 9 to 5 job, and states that she wouldn't see herself back on the road again. She still has her guitars but doesn't use them anymore. She doesn't seem intersted to join a band, unfortunately. Emma seems more into music and doesn't exclude being back on the road but hasn't got any projects these days. Too bad :(
She's way beyond the level of her (and yes, I fancied Molly as well). You won't find female musicians who have this level of technical talent nowadays, but back then, there were dozens of bands with mixed genders.
@ch20stn He left the band in December '91 to live with his girlfriend. He later moved to Dunleary (Ireland) and worked for a computer company. But this piece of info dates as far back as 1996 : I don't know anything newer so far.
Agreed. Up to Gala for me with a bit from Split. Split didn’t interest me at the time. The cover was abysmal and I think I saw a video for one of the songs on 120 minutes that looked really commercial and dumb. I think their manager was pushing them into crap like that in an effort to more commercialize their appeal. A lot of bands are destroyed by this inclination. Lush were perfect left to their own design.
