First of all, those of us that are 50 and up (I just turned 64) appreciate your reactions to this music of our lifetime. Luther's music is an example of true R&B/Soul music. Every song by him is a love song fast or slow. This is in my top 5 favorites. Wait until you hear his version of 'Superstar' - you just might weep! Luther's music is 'weep-worthy' whether you are female or male and it's OK.🤗🤗😍😍

I think what you’re picking up on, the effect you’re hearing, is Luther’s mastery of texture. He was meticulous with mixing the right textures with his voice, support the mood of the song and creating an almost theatrical soundscape. And vocally he used a lot of air in his sound creating that velvety effect. There’s no other like him. You’ll find these signatures in many of his songs.

I thought you HAD to have heard this one🤯 Edit: So MY big-Brody “Doc Powell” Jazz Guitarist, had the privilege to create with Mr. Vandross. 1987 “Dockey”(that’s what family called him), went into Ray Parker Jr.’s studio and co-arranged “What’s Going On” Jazz sample. Luther is on the background vocals, and my brother is on the highlighted guitar! He was so hype, he called our Dad from the studio and had Mr. Vandross talk to him. Daddy was tickled for at least a month after that. Dockey made sure that Mr. Vandross knew; it was his father who first put a guitar in his hands, and he hasn’t put it down ever since.❤ So #we love love Luther Vandross over here!!!!

My Mom was a superfan. She won front row seats to his concert in Oakland, CA and I was her date. His voice is so amazing that he can make you laugh and cry at the same time. He sings so effortlessly, smooth, subtle, yet powerful. Imagine- Whitney Houston was his opening act and she damn near blew the roof off!

No one compares to Luther. I think this is my favorite of all of his songs, then Never Let Me Go and lastly, Other Side Of the World. Ironically there's another version of this that's done by Kirk Whalum ft. Kevin Whalum and Lalah Hathaway. Nothing compares to Luther but it's a great gospel redo.

This is my favorite Luther song! My second favorite is "Searching" with the group Change. "Searching" reminds me of a Donna Summer song. My third favorite is "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and the fourth is "Don't You Know".
