Hey, I really loved the video thank you for the information! My Pekingese dog has a luxating patella in both of it's legs. One is grade 2 and the other 1.5. I would be very grateful if you have some tips or physical therapy exercises to help him because I would really like to avoid surgery :)

My Boston terrier had it in both legs, surgery in one leg aged 4 years old allowed her to become more balanced and her other knee fixed itself. 5 years later the pins are still in place, she has arthritis which she would have got anyway/already had (she is a rescue who was poorly treated, kept outside and used for breeding). She wears a soft knee support for her walks 👌 She maintains a weight of 7kg as she's a small Boston terrier and has one short walk a day of 20 minutes. I have a large garden and 4 other dogs so lots of play time. She never has vaccines, and I agree with hydrotherapy and exercises to strengthen the knees 👍Aged 9 now and doing well! We had absolutely zero complications with surgery and revovery🙏

UPDATE: I just watched the following video from Dr Andrew Jones about luxating patellas, and he pretty much answered all my questions as well as many of yours, so I thought I'd share it here for you all. Some comments below asked about exercises or physical therapy, natural supplements, etc. Dr Jones addresses specific exercises, including up and down stairs (one of my questions), a list of supplements he recommends, and even acupressure points!! THANK YOU DR JONES!!! The only question remaining for me is about the brace, so I'll keep researching, but for now, here's his video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DpphBJAMSh0.html And here's my original comment: My 7 yr old Pomeranian was just diagnosed last week with lux patella in both back knees, stage 1. The left one is slightly worse, but would always go right back in, so she only limped a little every so often. But she injured that one the other day and now it pops out several times a day and she hops around until it goes back in. This usually happens more frequently when she goes up and down stairs. You mentioned taking short walks for exercise, but WHAT ABOUT STAIRS? I have 4 porch steps we have to take multiple times per day to go out, and a full flight of stairs morning and night to go to and from the bedroom. Should I carry her up and down until her knees get stronger, or are stairs okay for lux patellas? Will taking stairs make it worse? What should I do? PLEASE HELP!! It's so heartbreaking. She used to be more active and energetic, and now she just lays around, doesn't even come to me when she has to go out or when she's hungry. I watch the clock and take her out at the times she usually would go and feed her at her usual meal time. I've researched some exercises and started her on your Four Leaf Rover Hip and Joint, and am looking into a brace for taking walks and especially going up and down steps, which again, seems to aggravate it the most. I discussed this with my vet's office, I spoke to one of the techs, and they couldn't recommend a specific brace, but gave me the name of an orthopedic vet that could maybe help with that. It's the closest one, but still 1 1/2 hours away (my integrative vet is 45 minutes away), and I'd rather try to manage this naturally first. There are so many options for braces; it would be nice if I could just get a recommendation for the right brace for a 16 lb Pom.

Well, i would recommend you specify for which grade is actually manageable with alternatives to surgery. I would love to know how would you conservatively treat a grade 4 patellar luxation. Also nice, vaccines and collagen...1 Study in Beagles oh and guess what all other sites that mention that study as a source are now not displaying any other studies on anything at all...

One of my shih tzu's has this. She came to me as a sickly adult and has improved so much with a raw diet, filtered water, no flea meds, herbicide free lawn, no vaccines, and plenty of love and exercise. She gets around just fine these days and doesn't seem to be in pain so I really hope she can avoid going under the knife in the future. I LOVE your content, you're one of the only sources I trust for dog related health questions!

Our 10 year old mini poodle has the knee out of place now from a jump. It's been two weeks and no change, she is still limping. Can you tell me about the raw meat diet adding omega 3? We don't know what to do, will. We have seen the wrap, or brace do those work and would you consider that?

Hello - great information. I just rescued a 4 year old toy Yorkie with medial luxating patella in both his hind legs. One is grade 3 and the other is grade 4. I went to an orthopedic surgeon and he said that he might need 2 or 3 surgeries. I'm not a vet but I surely am skeptical of his recommendation and skepticism about fixing the problem with surgery. I really don't want to subject this fragile creature to 3 surgeries with no guaranteed outcome according to the surgeon. He walks on 3 legs and sometimes on 4 but mostly he lifts the one with grade 4. Can you provide any insights on what should I do and if I should consider the surgery. Many thanks

Here is a great article on luxating patellas: www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/treatment-options-for-the-luxating-patella/ You can also look into hydrotherapy, chiropractic, massage and acupuncture as ways to help manage a luxating patella.

I am new at this. I have a 8 1/2 year old Papillion Maltese mix with a luxating patella in her right knee. It became noticeable when she started to fall or I should say lean over as she was walking. The vet diagnose the problem and put her on carprofen 25 mg 1/2 tablet every 12 hours for pain and inflammation. I have had to force it down her throat. she will not eat much of anything I have managed to get her to eat a small amount of what I call people food not so much the raw diet yet. my question is these pills make her tired and she lays around a lot. The veterinarian said it was to keep her so she wouldn’t be jumping up on things . after the pills we might have to do surgery. In between the pills about eight hours in she comes running to the door to meet me loves to be outside seems normal until the next pill dose. I have stopped taking her for walks which I understand. I’m doing just the opposite of your recommendation. My biggest problem is getting her to eat anything, suggestions would be appreciated.

My dog is a Maltese too, 7 1/2 yrs old. Having surgery in two week. He's a stage 3. He's also on the same med as yours. I actually brake that 25 in three even pieces and that way he gets a 1/3 of the pill every 12 hrs, because he was just laying around also. Seems like not a big difference but to a 15 pound dog it is. Hopefully your dog is doing well. I'd definitely get the surgery I'm paying $3,800 total. FML

9 pound, 10 year old Chi came to me with lux patella in both knees. One completely out and the other goes in/out. Runs with in/out leg up. Tore CCL in that leg and now we need surgery for pain (shifting knee) and to protect the other knee in long term. They are going to try to fix patella during the ACL surgery. Possible he will continue lifting leg up because he is used to it. This will be a long, tiring rehab but best outcome would be if he could run pain free again. Currently falls over sometimes during walks (he pees like a man) and unable to lift leg as high when runs. On 1/2 25mg carprofen once a day but at time of injury, they put him on 1/2 tablet 1-2 times/day.
