For the past year I've been using the Luxe Outdoor Hexpeak Tipi Tent in all 4 seasons. I've been able to use the tent in heavy snow, rain and high alpine windy settings. This tent truly has exceeded my expectations and really has become a Backcountry Exposure favorite. The Hexpeak is a 2 person, but roomy solo trekking pole tipi shelter.

Love my Seek Outside tipi-mid hybrid. It’s a little more spendy but it’s made in Colorado and Seek Outside actively supports Public Lands.

Aye Finally your review Thanks I just purchased this tent for long distance backpacking in England and Scotland where it can storm for days on end This tent answers my needs for a midge proof sleeping area and a place for dry sitting and a place for my wet backpack and wet gear outside of the sleeping area and protected out of the rain All under 2 kilos

It has taken a lots of p pitching the tent and getting the inner tent taut Practice practice practice It is like the tent has its own need And i am learning it On the sixth or seventh time it pitches well Very versatile The pole height is the crux

First time I saw this tent was actually the one you gifted to that friend. Met up in the Unitas with them and it was pretty obvious how functional it was. I would have never imagined 2 people in it but wow it was roomy. Also you clearly are an amazing guy as anyone who knows you had nothing but great things to say about you. Hopefully I'll bump into you some time in the Unitas or around somewhere in the Wasatch.. 😎

I love these tents ! I'm going for the octopeak first , so I can adventure with some friends and family , I will be getting a smaller one such as this for my solo adventures ! Great review of the tent. Question - - Why did you choose the Hexpeak over the Minipeak? I ask because I am in the process of purchasing a new tent and the Luxe tent is definitely on the short list. Would you recommend the one tent over the other? The tent will be used 60% of the time as a 2person (both my wife and myself are 5'8" and there will be a smaller dog @25lbs) and the other 40% of the time it will be just myself and dog. Typical trips are into back country of Colorado mountains across 3 seasons (unlikely in winter as we prefer mountain huts). Welcome any thoughts - - thx!

Great review mate. All I can say I’ve not got this tent but my 10 year old Golite Hex 3 is very similar , sil nylon but a bit bigger at 5’6” high with 56sq ft of floor.. Storm proof ? You better believe it I spent a week on a Scottish deserted island rain 50mph winds and minus 5 the whole time it worked perfectly. I’ve seen floor less tipis set over snow holes or ground dips so they had full standing head room try that in a Zpack . If my tent dies ( it’s got a small hole repair where a rock rolled against it in a windy night and wore through ) I’ll definitely look at one of these

Awesome review!! Im 6.6 feet long. I always find that when im liftet up by my sleeping pad, i touch with my feet and head on my msr. Do you think i could fit in this tent?

You would need to go up to the Hexpeak XL being that height.

That is an awesome price point on a great backpacking shelter. I like the brown color much better than the green and the orange inner contrasts well. I'll have to buy one of these shelters when I have the means to do so.

Man I got the Megahorn winter tepee with the stove jack&20$ coating the 1.5 inside tent this time last year set it up in my back yard to test it out befor heading in the woods for winter I was happy& excited wood stove going blabla it started snowing finally Next morning was going out&cook breakfast....the pole had snapped(broken)😡so I made a wooden pole..ok guess I can live with that Well after a weak in my yard the wind had purdy much blown it apart literally&as well as had to keep tying knots in the cheap guy line ropes uhg Now I have a 400$ can’t even make a tarp out of it pice of junk Should have listened to my instinct when I seen the return policy Just glad I wasent in the woods -20 for a weak I’d of been screwed thank u very much!!!!!((((JUNK))))

@@bushlifeaholick790 Then you had bad luck and should contact the brand friendly. Most people have good experience with the brand for reasons. Middle price for better quality and lighter weight compared to discounter junk but also not overly expensive high end. And I do not know where you bought it but in europe the returning policy from the direct brand side is in general very complaisant.

I didnt think the quality was at all good on my hexpeak lots of wobbly stitching and the zipper stitching can undone. The 4 naturehike tents i have are solid and build quality is way way better at less money

Lord Marshall I’ve got three videos from last winter out with a stove in the Luxe Megahorn and Hexpeak XL. It’s totally the best way to winter camp! Yes I have a Nemo Tensor Alpine.

A good thorough review. Thanks. Given the challenges of pitching the tipi and other trekking pole tents, and the near impossibility of setting them up quickly in high wind and rain, why would you not prefer to carry a bombproof tent like the Kuiu Mountain Star. It’s a 2P at the same weight as the full kit for the Hexpeak as a 1p. It is free standing and a snap to setup anywhere in any weather. I’m not judging your choice, just asking the question. I just don’t see the advantage to this tent setup, other than being much less expensive.

Kuiu Mountain Star is double the price. But the main reason to buy a Hexpeak is for the really large vestibule. You have your sleeping area, and your living space. Isn't that what a tent is about, that you like the model? Most of us don't do expeditions for which you need something special. As for rain and wind, well that is actually what the Hexpeak is good at because of the pyramid shape. You stake it out, put the pole in, and you're home and dry. Inner mesh comes later. Another advantage of tipi tents is you can combine different outer and inners, to save weight, or go luxury palace. . But in tight rocky spaces a small freestanding tent is the better choice. There is a tent for everything. Even circus.

IM, I did with mine. But avoid the stuff that comes with it. Had to talc my tent after a week of the seam sealant not drying. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nCX8UBhDGqE.html is how I did it after getting it off. But then I camp in rain as standard. 🤣🤣🤣

This tent has wowed me since I bought mine 4 years ago and have used no other shelter it's that good. That's the outer (or fly). The Luxe inner tent is far too heavy (at 600g) for what its is, so I have a selection of AliExpress inners for around 400g which do the job fine. I agree with all your observations about this tent, particularly the weather resistance, the generous space and the versatility. One tip: swap out the provided 2mm-gauge cordage for 3mm, because the 2mm slips in the line-locks in gusts of strong wind.

I found it to be small inside for usable space yes its big but over 40% is just unsable area around the edge, plus if you have a marginal camp site ( like most of them here in the uk) you struggle to get it pitched tight so it will sag,.

@@allwaysinquire6212 I use the edge parts for storage, plus they're doing a great job of making the tent aerodynamic. I've yet to struggle with my UK pitches, and sagging doesn't happen if you re-tension once the tent has 'settled' from its initial pitch (as with all silnylon). If you're feeling particularly lazy you can even do this from inside by adjusting the height of your support upward. Sure a mid requires a bit more 'campcraft' to set up right, but I find it worth the effort. I'd have a Hillie Soulo if it weighed less - wouldn't we all?

Yes you do need to reset the pitch what i found is when the ground is poor ( like alot of wales ) and you cant get a solid peg hold ( and i tried alot of big long pegs ) that any strength is gone and if one peg comes out they will all start to.plus as a one man tent the weight is way too much for the space you get and if it snows good luck as it collapse very easily unlike any geodesic tent. I have owned well over 30 tents ( i have a problem i know) and out of all of them the mid shape has been the least usefull too me.

But given your preference for geodesics and freestanders, I wonder why you think 660g (plus 380g if I'm adding an inner) is "way too much weight" for a tent of its size? My Hexpeak has been fine in snow btw, better than the TN Voyager which preceded it, and I've yet to have a stake come out in soft ground (and yes, I mainly camp in Snowdonia and Scotland). The only problem was lines slipping in the linelocs, but that's easily remedied by swapping out the provided 2mm for 3mm cordage. Possibly I'm pickier about site selection than you are, and if I wanted the ability to pitch just about anywhere or if I was planning on summit camping I'd probably opt for a freestanding design. Keep going with the tent collecting! I'm only on my third in 40 years so what do I know?

This looks like a great shelter, a good price point, for rainy days as well. All that vestibule space creates a less cramped feeling when trapped inside on rainy days. What are your thoughts for size of person? What height would you recommend the inner for?

J Smitty Yeah i should do that. Depending on how soft the sand is you may need to add more cordage. But you’ve got about 10” of cord at each point.

Depending on your height, the hexpeak is okay for two people. The Minipeak is better for two. Being a single wall tent, unless you add an inner is going to have condensation issues. Pitching the tent higher will help with that.

I just purchased this tent. I cant wait for some winter camping. I have the Black Diamond FLZ Trekking poles that max out at 48 inches. They are held internally with a cord and don't come apart. Besides getting a longer trekking pole what else can I use?

For non-backpacking, I bought a washing line pole for a fiver at the local ironmongers (I'm a Brit). You are supposed to be able to use the Velcro straps that come with the tent to strap two poles together. Luxe Germany has videos.

In my tenting experience I have had one campsite where I could push the pegs into the ground . Very important when setting up a tent that needs pegging down. Ah hah no floor included!

Traven Michaels I would suggest the Hexpeak with the inner over the Lanshan any day! A lot more space for a minimal weight increase with the Hexpeak. Especially if considering 4 season use.

Traven Michaels yes. The Hexpeak just is more versatile in its pitch, so you can increase space with a slightly taller pitch. When the inner tent is nice and tight, it’s very roomy.

Have you had it in high winds? We experience 20-30mph winds quite regularly in North Dakota and wondering how the guy out points will fair in those conditions. Sometimes gusts get close to 50mph and don't want it to shred the thing. I have a Seek Outside 8-man tipi and Cimarron but wouldn't mind looking at a smaller, solo option. Thanks!

Corey Trick yes I’ve had it in wind, many times. The design is meant to shed wind and it performs really well. A good pitch makes all the difference too. I feel you’d be happy with it.

It will handle 50mph winds if you set it up properly (practice first!), swap out the 2mm cordage for 3mm (easy to do), adjust your support so that you pitch the tent flush to the ground, utilise all the supplementary guying points, and use good stakes. Doing this, mine has had no trouble standing up to windy conditions in the Scottish Highlands.

I've been intimidated by tepee shelters. Sometimes when you're slogging into camp the last thing you want to think about is finding that ideal area for your tent and the frustration that comes with that. However, I have to admit they do look awesome. How long would you say it takes you to pitch that tent on average?

LOL Population can definitely understand that. After a few times pitching this it becomes a quick process. I haven’t ever timed myself, but I can get a basic pitch in about 5 minutes. Then adjustment to get it perfect another 5 or so.

Yep if the grounds not flat good luck getting a tight pitch and not having your inner touch the outer. Plus these shelter rely on the pegs to keep there shape so if the ground dosnt like your pegs you will spend the night with a sagging mess.

Hi.I've owned this tent 4 years now and i love it.I'm 6 foot tall and you have to deal with the inner tent being very close to your face.I'm a side sleeper so not a problem for me.If you're a back sleeper then at 6ft 3 it could be an issue. Apart from that,this is an awesome tent.

I really, really love the weatherproofness of pointy tents, & I love how they look, but man...as a claustrophobe, every time I even watch a review video of them, by about 40 seconds in, I can feel the panic in my body. I need me my usable overhead space. Which sucks, because almost all hot tents I could afford are tipi or pyramid -style. :-/

Hard case I thought I desined the perfict stuffable shelter as in the thick North nz jungle everinch counts on the horse! Went as far as making polly prototypes and buying ripstop then found yours online, exactly how I imagined it, o well, well done and I guess I'll just have to buy one of yours👍 guess you can ship em to nz ay?

Had the winter version of this the v4 i think its called. I sold it as theres lots of issues using it here in the UK. They are. Lots of condisation because of the large area the ground off gasses vapour so it get alot most of any tent i have owned. Large footprint which is hard to find a camp spot here in the uk. You need very good pegs as if one comes out the rest will zipper. The inner is small theres bugger all room theres only usefull room in the centre of the tent. You need a strong pole if its high winds as the tent will sag and flap like mad. Room to weight is actually not that good theres alot of room thats unuseable around the edge of the tent. And finally the build quality wasnt that good my zipper came off as the stitching on the end of the zip came undone plus lots on not straight stitching. On paper they look like winners but i found for me way too many issues so sold it on and brought a naturehike cloudpeak a way better tent stronger same weight less condisation and smaller pack size

I can't speak to the possibility of a sewing failure, but it sounds like a better pitch would have solved a lot of the issues you had. I don't live in the UK so I don't know what it's like there. But When this tent has a tight pitch it doesn't have fabric flapping around any more than any other backpacking tent. Can't win em all I guess.

@@BackcountryExposure true but were i camp is mostly soft ground which makes getting a tight pitch hard. My biggest gripe is the lack of room theres only really useful space in the centre of the tent and being 6.1 i spent alot of time trying not to touch the outer.

@@neemancallender9092 yep watched all those funny how they seem to be all buying hilleberg now 😂 . I just didnt get on with it the shape is rubbish you get less usable space yes its big but i am 6.1 and have size 11 feet and that inner is tiny and slopes at the ends so wet sleeping bag ever trip with out fail. The cloud peak ( nature hikes hilleburg knock off) is much better flaps less needs less pegs has two doors with vestibules and is mostly free standing. Now it isnt perfect ( not even hilleburgs are perfect) you need to upgrade the poles and if your tall you need to sleep on a angle but it has performed fantastically 30 mph winds didnt budge i dont get a wet sleeping bag have zero condisation on the inner and currently its cheaper than the luxe gear and better fabrics whats not to love? I have owned macpac/ terra nova and vango tents and the five chinese tents i have are all better than all of the these name brands and have lasted many nights out ( including the tour of mt blanc camping in lightning storms)

PBJTime it would, but would be a little tight. You’d have to pitch it taller each time. The Hexpeak XL would be a solid option for a minimal weight increase.

I despise the bright color on the inside mesh insert. They really should make it more earth colored like the exterior.

Bright colored inners are better for cosiness factor and for safety. Hillebergs are bright yellow. It's a nicer place to be than a dark coloured hole and it gives you something to wave around as a signal if you need saving

I really would NOT recommend this to beginners. It’s a pain to pitch and get the inner set and it’s a pain to break down and pack. It’s massive too. I likely will be looking for something else.

I got a minipeak that I use with a small 6x8 tarp on the ground to save weight backpacking. Leave the inner at home. Four stakes and a trekking pole. It’s up in a couple minutes. Stake out the side pullouts and I’m out of the rain.
