The average consumer doesn’t care at all about sustainability or the climate. They don’t even think about how their shopping habits keep themselves poor and hurts retail jobs (their own jobs.) It feel so bleak here in America. I have seen people who became furious when a company change return policies that people were using to use products for free. Most people seem to think they deserve to own as many things as the Kardashians.

I agree, but there is one benefit to this thoughtlessness - people will adopt a more sustainable fashion mindset if you don’t give them a choice. That’s why legislation is so important, if the companies have no choice but to move to more sustainable model, the consumers will fall in line.
@skrittle555
@skrittle555 День назад
That's just not true. A recent study by NielsenIQ found that 78 percent of US consumers say that a sustainable lifestyle is important to them. The burden is not on the consumer, it's on the government to force change onto brands through legislation and enforcing anti-trust laws, like the FTC is currently doing by suing Amazon. The whole reason we're in this position with endless inflation of goods and quality of items being trash is because the FTC took a "hands off" approach to companies forming trusts, starting in the 1980s. As a result, a handful of companies control the entire US market and therefore the cost of goods. And those companies have the power (aka money) to lobby against change and regulation in every industry. The onus is not on the individual, despite what companies have been trying to brainwash us to believe for decades. The onus is on the government for not doing its due diligence to control the market in a way that doesn't totally screw over the average consumer.

When people say they like SHEIN for access to unique fashion, I think they're using a different definition of "unique" than you do. They mean styles that are unique to them, not unique in the grand scheme of fashion. Most buyers probably don't know about SHEIN stealing designs, but most of them probably wouldn't care anyway. Hell, other popular fast fashion companies have been stealing designs and art for many years. As for whether we're going to see a larger societal shift away from aggressive consumerism... I don't think that's going to happen until people don't have a choice. Whether it's environmental catastrophe, another Great Depression, or companies being unable to exploit laborers anymore.

shaming people for buying SHEIn is not the best way to go about things. People usually buy from SHEIn because they can't afford other brands/ platforms. I think the overall shift from Influencers to sustainable clothing and practices is the best thing to happen in the fashion world. Even looking at the runways coming out- sustainable and shopping your own closet is so in vogue that they have to encourage it if they want to remain relevant.
@sablemuse

The thing is it just so happens that a lot of the countries used to unethically produce these garments, will feel the effects of global warming first, such as rising sea levels. If their governments don’t step in soon, they might not have a country to run… it shouldn’t have to come to that 😤. My mum was a 70’s kid and she said clothes back then were well made and quite expensive, so they were always cherished. She had her suitcase stolen in Paris as a teen and was heartbroken because they were all the clothes she owned. It just sucks that long lasting, timeless, quality item’s aren’t sustainable in capitalism. Corporations are too used to their astronomical profits. If they all used just a fraction of their profits to rectify the damage they’ve caused things would improve. But it’s not broken for them yet so they have no incentive to fix it.
@hww4773
@hww4773 2 дня назад
I think it’s a bit of a slippery slope if we let luxury brands get off more lightly than fast fashion companies when it comes to lifting designs from smaller independent people.. (not to say that they don’t and haven’t been for ages lol) especially as you also mentioned, they are tending to operate in a similar way recently. Schiaparelli is part of Tod’s Group which has massive resources and could easily afford to work directly with the original designer under some form of a deal, publicly disclosed or not. The original designer’s reaction is interesting because it does show maturity, at least at face value, however it does push us further away from holding people with huge resources, power and influence accountable for their exploitative and self-serving practices..
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 2 дня назад
@@hww4773 really really good point here! completely agree - although there’s potentially less of them being made it’s still the idea of stealing designs and the brand definitely had the resources to work with the designer rather than rip them off (if that was the case, still not sure whether i believe Rosebery had seen the design or not!)
@ObservingtheMatrix
@ObservingtheMatrix 2 дня назад
I will say that if you’re not a designer it’s kind of hard to understand this ethos BUT I totally agree with how he responded and the idea that multiple people can truly have the same idea. Especially because of how design actually takes place and how fashion is an amalgamation of so many references and ideas. I’m a black designer who has been designing since 2004 and I’m not trying to toot my own horn but there are near entire collections of ideas that I’ve already explored in similar ways that I’ve seen now by designers like Virgil and Olivier (black designers). Specifically the black and white collection Oliver did with the super 80s inspirations AND the cloudy sky collection by Virgil. I had a whole “concept” about birds in the clouds as a take on tweets and cloud computing - technology and fashion. When I saw Virgil’s looks with the cloud print I knew he’s never seen my sketchbook but I know there are so many concepts that just don’t get explored because honestly fashion is very homogeneous and a majority of designers see beauty in the same way. The injection of black designers has made me see things I’ve designed before but never developed. It’s important to acknowledge, if you’re a real designer or artist, that truly original ideas are extremely difficult to conjure up.

The best fashion advice I ever heard was to buy high quality basics, secondhand when possible, and to learn how to style your well loved closet for the trends. I haven't bought more than 5 clothing items in the last 2 years because I simply restyle my existing closet. My favorite piece is a pair of houndstooth slacks I found in the men's section. I wear them about once a week and always look posh in them. I bought a pair of barrel jeans in the men's section last year and I get so many compliments on my 8$ pants. My surplus cargo pants found in the back of a friends garage are my second staple piece. The 70's leather jacket my dad thrifted for my birthday is the same cut and wear that is blowing up in Paris this month. Fashion can absolutely be accessible and sustainable if you have the ability to discern trend rotations and love what you already have.

The ivory cable knit sweater that you showed looks handmade! Have you considered commissioning a fiber artist? You could absolutely find a beautiful bespoke piece and support an artist. @MidrinaTheSerene

@@katierobinson Also know that commissioning a (good) hand-knitted garment, especially a cabled sweater, will cost hundreds and hundreds. I'm a very experienced and fast knitter, and if I have to estimate the time that goes into even a basic stockinette sweater in the yarn weight that those sweaters have I'd say it's about 40 hours to me. Let's say 40 hours and about € 13,68 (which is minimum wage here, so it's very cheap for a skilled craft), and you have almost €550 for the time alone. As said, that is considering the time I as a very fast knitter spend on a sweater not featuring things like cables. Then the yarn can be another €50 to €100 at least, and up if you want sustainable yarns to be used. If you consider sustainable fashion only, I think this is something you do need to take into account. Because fiber artists are usually a very underpaid and undervalued group of people. Of course there's always the option to learn how to knit, I can promise you that it is very fun and rewarding ;-)

Growing up in my neighborhood we would do boo baskets and neighbors would “boo” each other. Usually the “basket” would be a a candy bowl or a candy carry bucket and you would put in some candy, maybe a home made baked good, and some cute but cheap Halloween decoration or costumes elements (like cat ears). You would tape a sign saying Boo! On a neighbor’s front door and leave the basket. That neighbor would then leave the boo sign on their front door to indicate they’ve been boo’d already and they would pick someone from the neighborhood to boo themselves. I remember it being loads of fun as a kid, both to receive and put together for a neighbor.

I definitely understand where you're coming from with consuming more consciously, and I applaud it. But the onus is not on the consumer. It's on our government. We need to break up large conglomerates. We need to enforce anti-trust law, like the FTC is currently doing in America with Amazon by suing them. We need to lobby our governments en masse to enforce these laws and stop letting the 1% control the market. When this happens, items will go back to the quality they were in the 70s and earlier, and prices will fall to compete with each other. Do your best, and advocate for the rest.

Katie, as a plus size girl (can I still say Girl as a 40 year old woman? LOL) who is really into fashion, I wanted to thank you for mentioning the lack of plus size inclusion during fashion month. Also the “Ozempic Effect” is currently having a huge impact on plus size fashion…there have been about a dozen or so big brands that have pulled their extended size options from the sales floors and offering them only online and in some cases not at all! Also it’s near impossible to find anything cute in plus that is truly sustainable! Question - You speak a lot about fast fashion brands H&M, Shein, Zara, and more, but I’m wondering if you have any information on Cider? I believe they’ve only been in business for about 4-5 years, but they have some pretty cute pieces and about 50% of those pieces are offered in straight and plus sizes. I just recently realized that my order from them came directly from China and I wondered if I made a mistake and it’s just another Shein-style company?

Re finding clothes from your parents’ wardrobes… it was originally after my grandad passed when I realised the beauty in secondhand. He used to buy high-quality clothes to last years (literally sealed his suits up to last decades). I still have some of his P.G.Field sweaters which are probably from the 90s or 00s. Before that, I didn’t have a true ‘style identity’ and bought clothes almost entirely from H&M… not anymore. Inheriting clothes is both sweet and very eye-opening 😌 also, one of my close friends used to buy Shein and I would always tell her why it was a bad idea. Of course, it’s because she couldn’t afford much else, BUT ALSO because they actually made plus-size clothing when many other lower cost brands weren’t. I’m not sure if it’s the same nowadays and she doesn’t buy from there anymore, but I always wondered why that was the case.

i was actually purposefully leaving them out of the podcast episodes so it was more like a stream of conciousness / listen thing but i can add them if people still want them like on my other videos!!

I will say, just because someone is on ozempic (or weight loss drugs in general) doesn’t mean they’re not active. Most people who have a goal of losing weight, especially if it’s a significant amount of weight, usually try to do everything in their power and that includes exercise. I personally wouldn’t condone using ozempic as a weight loss tool, but those i know who have tried it have done it in addition to diet and exercise, as a last hail mary after years of not getting the results they want. Spoiler, it didn’t help and it had nightmare secondary effects.

I know several people on ozempic and they all achieved good outcomes without major side effects. Your experience is not universal.

@@AlexHider ok… My point was that people who use ozempic do likely have a need for activewear. i’ve never used ozempic or said i did, i just shared the experiences of people i know.

@@quenepacrossing4675 don’t walk it back now, there isn’t a single word about shape wear in your comment, but you did insist on adding a snotty remark about a maligned medication you are not on. Check yourself.

oh totally, didn't mean to imply that everyone on the drug isn't exercising!

Ozempic has a variety of outcomes and side effects for people taking. Some people experience little to no weight loss, and some can loose upwards of 30% of their body mass. Some people experience little to no side effects some experience very severe side effects which negatively impact daily life. It is a drug specifically designed to slow digestion, increase production of a hormone that triggers insulin production, and decrease levels of hormones causing hunger signals. It doesn’t just make you burn more calories, it has a major impact on the functioning of the digestive system which will not match well for some people. Additionally if the people you know who took it were in the US, because it is in shortage, they may have received “ozempic” from a compounding pharmacy which means that the drugs they took may have had an insufficient dose or completely lacked the active ingredient of ozempic.

Lately opening social media feels like the equivalent of walking into lush and getting swarmed with people trying to sell you sh1t you don’t need. I hate that companies like amazon and TikTok shop now using average ‘influencer’ users as foot soldiers to sell their crap in exchange for commission. One influencer said that if you click on their amazon link and go onto fill up your basket from there, he would get commission on the entire basket you purchased! He doesn’t speak highly of them, barely even mentions or links amazon but said even including high end sponsors, (he does interior design content) he makes the most money from amazon links!! It is hard once you know the truth. I can’t bring myself to buy new clothes these days. I was hypnotised by this dior catwalk add, I could never justify buying dior. ever. but I’ve come to realise that you can appreciate style, design and beauty without having to own it for yourself, like going to a gallery or something? I rarely see people walking around wearing anything inspiring irl & I know I wouldn’t get my cost per wear out of anything I see online, it’s just nice to look at, thats it.
