love this whole video, "it feels like we're being sold personalities" is insanely true with so many microtrends being marketed as something unique when a lot of them just a rebrand of past trends

This is such thoughtful commentary! I already feel so over the hype of this album, so the idea of it becoming the 'theme' of the summer feels exhausting. My one disagreement I have is that I think it might be a little too optimistic to say the real vibe of brat has anything to do with sustainability. The fact that there is an amazon exclusive brat vinyl feels incredibly emblematic of this. Some of Charli's biggest sponsors over the years have been google and samsung. I don't get the vibe that she really has a lot of integrity when it comes to sustainability. I think the album, while it tries to be fun (?), is ultimately obsessed with conspicuous over-consumption and the flaunting of wealth. During this time of economic uncertainty it feels like the album is trying to be an ironic take on the McBling era, and it actually makes me quite disappointed to see how few people are criticizing how tone deaf it is. To be honest, I think the reason for a lot of the love for the album is people are genuinely tired of trying to be sustainable. The economy is bad and people don't feel like their sustainability is actually changing anything. This album is all about 'eff it, im going to be bad.'

I've said it before and i'll say it again: aesthetics are so bad for personal style and self! When I was first introduced to them, I was so worried about which interests I'd have to give up and what stuff I should buy to be "one aesthetic." (ex: i LOVE rock but was so into cottagecore). it's just advertising. We are all too cool and multifaceted to be put in one box and that's a good thing-- don't let aesthetics tell you otherwise.

Watching this video while wearing a neon vomit orange vintage Kate Spade bag… hahah. I actually love this colour of green a lot. The over consumption riding off artistry is tired, but I fucking love the slimey neon green. I acquired many slimey neon green bags ten years ago when this colour was last peaking and I wore through them all. I miss the green. I hope to seen more green everywhere. I hope people save their money and don’t buy into fake hype. If you like Charli you already listen to her music and dress however you like. Hooray thanks for the video :)

The only way I’ll really engage with “brat girl summer” is by blasting brat and Charli and painting my nails brat green lols. Like why do I need to make an album or artists or place my whole identity? I’m multifaceted and have loads of interests and hobbies. I do engage with some trends, but I mostly have found the brands and styles I like the most and stick with those

honestly the brat look is exactly what gen Z is wearing currently in Europe (or at least in Scandic countries). Second hand 2000s tops and low waist jeans, sneakers, hand bags, mix n match of styles and lots of 'vibes'. I call it the 'techno' look cuz I usually see them in techno clubs.

yes!! i've been noticing it so much more since filming this video, currently in Spain and I saw so many brat coded outfits today alone (mostly big jorts, graphic tees, general grunge vibes!) maybe charli was just inspired by the current fashion and not the other way round 💀

Brands may have a difficult time selling this one because "Brat" doesn't seem to have a succinct enough visual language. Barbie was easy: Pink and/or Barbie logo. A huge part of fashion is instantaneous non verbal communication of who you are (or are trying to be). I predict this trend will be over before people are able to understand or recognise it.
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 9 часов назад
interesting take & i don't disagree that it's gonna be a hard one for brands to market! ofc they could go after the bright green but like I said in the video it's less about colour for this trend & more about vibe 👀

@@katierobinson at least the grungy look is more traditionally autumn/winter, so maybe it can have an extended shelf life instead of going into landfill in August! 😬

i would argue that brat aesthetic or its visual language is a repackaging of indie-sleeze and 2000's rave fashion. but i agree that it isnt explicitly communicated.

The brands absolutely need to take responsibility for their affects on people and planet. It should directly come from their profits - every other option allows them to continue to not take responsibility for their messes and mistakes.

Great video overall as all your other videos! However I would like to disagree with one of the things you said " Brands don't want you to know". As a small brand owner trying to do everything as sustainably as possible I can confirm that we do we really do. But even if we ask all manufacturers relentlessly, they still struggle to give answers. I already don't produce outside of europe as I am scared to not being able to oversee but when it comes to fibres even though we are only using Tencel or Gots certified cotton, we still struggle to get full traceability and straight answers or names and locations of these cotton farms. Unless maybe we would hire a private investigator, which as a one and a half person brand we can really not afford. So we want we really do... it is not as easy. Of course if we are talking about Zara and Shein then yes agree completely they do not want that at all.
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 8 дней назад
this was definitely a generalisation on my part and mostly geared at bigger brands!! it's such a mindfield for smaller brands and most of that comes from a lack of action from Zara, H&M etc who definitely have the resources to demand transparency for everyone, but don't bc they benefit from us not seeing any information

Thank you! ✨ you’re so right, I feel like everyone thinks they like fashion but they want to just feel good and look good on their clothes. That’s why they try to replicate others style hoping to look the same. I learned to sew bc my grandma was a seamstress, and I’ve experimented so much with my moms, aunt and grandmas clothes. But now I also feel that fashion fatigue from so many trends on social media. I started to think I should fit in an aesthetic so I started buying clothes and now I want to throw everything and start again 😢 but I don’t want to waste so I’m renovating all my pieces one by one 🥵🫡 I know not everyone can do this so my advice to everyone is to check their body type (ALL the features not just overall shape), colour season and hairstyles for your face shape. And that’s it ✨✨ everyone would feel good and comfortable and beautiful 🫶🏽 Btw I always have your videos in the background while sewing 🫶🏽✨

There is absolutely no reason to use blockchain for this data. All it means is the process will remain the same but now you also mint an NFT under another name alongside it, and everyone knows NFTs are SO good for the environment. (Also - good video!)

There’s no incentive for large brands to do this. The bottom line is they are driven by profit and share price, they’re not driven by sustainability, ethics or anything else. Unfortunately that means nothing will change beyond a bit of tweaking around the edges and greenwashing.

tbf "buy less" is for either first-world countries average and above consumer and for richer people in other contries. it's always almost groundbreaking to see how many items of clothing average consumer in first-world countries buy and how sustainability pages say the magic "buy less", when the last item of clothing i bought was 4 months ago, plus replacing my 4yo sneakers. i guess it's a important reminder for actual middle class. but the middle to lower middle class in post-soviet contries, for example, almost exists in a different world. not a critic! as always, love your videos, they're very informative. it's just a viewpoint i haven't seen being brought up

can you leave comments on depop sellers' pages? i think it's more beautiful as a top. it looka great! if you know someone who sews and want to make the edge look better you can ask them for help. you also can buy something like bias tape or lace to decorate the edge. again, if you want to, it looks nice as it is

@@katierobinson you're too nice and it's not always a good thing :') i think if she does so intentionally, it's better to inform others. if not you can simply add "i don't know if it's intentional" or something along the lines to "soften" it. also, i don't think anyone will judge you for leaving your feedback not right away, but if they will it's their problem as for lace, it will be very hard to find the exact one if even possible. you might get lucky but know this might save you a lot of time! wow, i really have a lot to say

wow wow the garment facts are brilliant 🤯 I never thought about that as we get the same one from food. you are right, there must be a learning curve for the food industry and people don't want to admit how bad their food is. but!! after many decades, do people even care? do people read the labels anymore 😂 99% of us don't. and not everyone can comprehend it although the text is simple for public. we could do the same for the garment label and see how many people even notice and care to read. it would be a good experiment. I mean even for food industry, some brands even fake/manipulated the nutritional facts so.. yeah this thing can't be that authentic at the end of the day 🙃
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 15 дней назад
it's v true that labels don't always change actions, but i think the simple act of brands having to disclose this to everyone would make a bigger impact than we think!! and if it changes even a handful of people's minds then thats a win!
