I love a well carved set for playing as well as looks, without it being too ornamental as this one, but this here is top mastery of the carving craft. A thousand thanks for sharing. 'Elite' Luxury is this set's category. And the board is beyond beautiful, I have the same but dark sq. are gray/non gloss/witj red stripe surrounding the 18" playing field. Hey, I hope the library where you play has carpeted flooring! iffit were mine it'd never leave the house!
Thank you!! I just spent a couple of hours if not three pouring over the pieces in different websites, but this VIDEO made all the difference in the world! You just sold that set! I will gloss mine as well. Thank you very much for making this video!!!
Your money is well spent! You can be really proud that you own such a magnificent work of art. The beauty of the knight tells this is one of the best sets ever.
I've been researching chess sets and boards to buy, and I can asure you guys: until now, I strongly believed that there is a tradeoff that was impossible to resolve: I believed that either you make a good PRACTICAL (and not so beautiful) chess set (with easily identifiable pieces, like Staunton design) OR you make a gorgeous, well crafted and gorgeous chess set, but hard to play because of non-standard look. Now, this video tells me that I was WRONG! This chess set is the first one that makes my jaw drops and looks perfectly playable at the same time!!! Man, how I wish I could buy it... Unfortunately, living in Brazil, all I can do is just enjoy it on RU-vid...
Is it broken easily? This set is gorgeous but some pieces seem be broken easily, especially the crown symbol of the King piece, it's small and weak a bit.
Just Great this is One of the Best Chess Set's I've seen and It must Give you Great Pleasure to play with a Set like this And Own Just Beautiful Many Thanks For The Video Best Wishes.
So you didn't buy the lacquered pieces right, you got the buff polish and then glazed them yourself? Because I'm looking at a similar set from chess bazaar, (the st petersburg set) and I can't decide between the buff polish or the lacquered. I wanted to get an idea of how glossy the lacquered pieces are but there are no videos and the pictures on their website look nearly identical for both versions. I'm worried that the pieces will be too glossy and won't match my satin finish board, but I do like a little bit of gloss on my pieces.
Flavio Esteban I better understand your question now. I was confused at first. When I bought this set, CB did not have any finish options. They only had their regular finish (which was buffed) which was a default. No options. Now I see they have options of matte or lacquer. I think they saw this RU-vid post, and it’s attention ... and made improvements by offering a lacquer option as an add-on. I did this all myself.
NuckinFutzxX, I'm looking a similar pieces from chess bazaar, (the st petersburg pieces) and I can't decide between the st petersburg pieces and the the Arabian Knight pieces. Finaly i decide to go with the Arabian Knight pieces. The st petersburg pieces they have by far ... the most butiful Knights in the world, after the Arabian Knights is the most butiful, but overoll the Arabian Knight pieces is the most butiful.
So the felt wasn’t a problem. If you spray too lightly ... it will not “level” and will feel rough. Too much, and it will run. I’d practice on something first. You need to be not too close, and not to far. Test spray until you get a feel. It’s cold here today. I applied on a hot summer day in the South ... not sure that had an effect. Not really sure what to say. I did a few coats and allowed about 8 hours between coats. Hit the pieces from a few angles. I also stored during drying time in a storeroom to keep any outside dust or debris from collecting in the pieces.
Thanks for making this video. I was looking at this exact board but I'm concerned about durability since it's veneer. Any feedback on that durability concern for that board? Mainly worried about the corners and edges chipping.
QUESTION: Aren't the pieces too big to play with on a daily basis? I'm considering purchasing a similar sized set but I'm apprehensive as I feel they wont be suitable for daily play.. plz share your thoughts and advice. Thank youuuu
un known Never bothered me to play large pieces. It does take up room ... not as easy to tote around ... if that’s your point. But playing at the house ... not a problem.
I feel like kind a wash my hands first before I'II start playing with these sets :) then playing with it feels like I'm rich :) very beautiful set, thanks for showing us :)
Greetings Richard. It took me a very long time, but I finally got around to lacquering my Padauk wood pieces. I got eight pawns completed and they are drying as we speak. Thanks for your recommendations and tips on how to perform the job. I used the same lacquer you did and the results are phenomenal! I can't wait to continue the project in the morning. I'll be posting a video on the results and will post the link here. I was a bit apprehensive and fearful of screwing up but everything worked out like a charm. I'll be lacquering my other chess sets from India in the coming weeks. the glossy pieces just look delicious! 😋
Hello Richard! I am planning to buy me chess set from chessbazaar. I'm looking for a 1.8'' square size board. I am very confused about the size of the pieces i need to get. Do you have any suggestion about it? Also, I'm planning to add this gloss finish to my pieces too. Did you apply it on the board? Thank you and congratulations for your set, it's gorgeous.
Rose Vent I did not apply the gloss to the board. I did try that on a cheap board and it does NOT work well at all !!! The spray from the can doesn’t “level” very well across large flat surfaces. It does well on the pieces - which is a much smaller surface area. Hope that helps. The board you see in the video was bought with high gloss already at the time of purchase. That was one of the reasons I wanted to gloss the pieces in the first place - to better match the board.
Hello . Can you tell me how this set is doing after 5 yrs. hope that u played well with this set. Also have u tried these pieces on the ebony chess board if u have any and how it looks on that.
The set is doing extremely well. No, I own a fantastic chess set … but that doesn’t not help my game play at all lol. I like playing, wish I played better. But my rating floats between 1250 and 1450 at most.
I am shopping for a nice wooden set too and I noticed you are using terms “padauk” and “bud rosewood” interchangeably. Aren’t they totally different woods? Could you please explain?
Some Boxing Fan True Rosewood is now become illegal to export. It’s too rare. This is perhaps 12 years now illegal. So, terms like “bud rosewood” and “blood rosewood” were invented. But both of these are really Padauk. Look up these wood types in Wikipedia or a wood authority. It will explain the same thing.
This is nice but I prefer a more traditional set as you say I would be terrified to use it because it looks nice so a more traditional set is better for use
Hey, Rich. I just purchased a luxury set from Chessbazaar, and I'm a bit worried. I've read comments from some very unhappy customers which caused my concerns. Looking at your set, it seems as advertised. Hopefully I get lucky and get the same quality you have, because it appears as if it comes down to what carver works your set. Any words of encouragement, please.
Joe P I’ve heard a few horror stories ... however I have ordered from CB three times now ... I have all good experience with them. If something is not right, stick to your guns and start by asking for a refund because of ____________. They will probably refuse the refund, but offer to fix _____________. Let them try to fix the issue, whatever it is ... if they can not, go back to the refund solution. Let me know your experience. Like I said, all three of my orders went well ... but I have seen images of sets that had major issues from them.
@@richardwalters9249 Sorry, I never got a notification of your response until now; very strange. Anyway, I did receive my set rather quickly, and I must say I was not disappointed at all. I'm not the easiest person to please (hence the panic attack from OP) and I was more than satisfied. It was every bit as nice as the pictured set. Have since ordered a second set, and again very pleased. Thanks for all the tips, but gladly no issues.
Richard, I absolutely love the chess set with lacquer. Have ordered from chessbazaar with lacquer as an option. Thanks for the video though. Which is your recent acquisition?
Frank Brues Thanks !! I think CB has been watching this video. When I ordered, lacquer was not an option. I had to do this myself. And it was really to fix an oxidation issue.
Frank Brues - yeah, the knights in the St. Petersburg set are gorgeous. Sadly, I don’t like any of the other pieces. I wish they used these nights in the Arabian Knights set, though I suppose that would make the name meaningless :-)
nur abdul when I bought this set, they did not have those options. They only came in CB’s default finish (which was buffed). I think this RU-vid video garnered some attention fro CB, and they improved with the lacquer option as an add-on. (And, I received no credit with my ideas and experimentation extending from the mother of necessity. Lol).
Angel Collins perhaps I should have videoed that. I didn’t think about it at the time. If I decide to so that, I may link that video from this one. I have a few spare pawns I might be able to use to demonstrate ...
So I wanted to thank you once more... My Arabian Knight Series pieces came today, and are currently drying from the triple glaze I put on them to look like yours! :) By the way I got the exact same set on Amazon for $324.00 after tax. Can you tell me where I can get the storage box, and exactly what terminology is used to identify it. Thank you! Mucho!
I looked at Amazon ... but that was a long time ago ... and they did not have everything (like the storage box) available. Since I ordered from overseas and had to pay shipping anyway for some of those items, I just ordered everything at once (cheaper for one package of shipping ... plus they packaged the pieces in the coffer too). Seemed to work our pretty well doing that.
@@richardwalters9249 Yep you did well! I really like that box. I'm just starting to get serious about chess, and thought I was pretty good until I saw people who really know how to play, and I am dumbfounded! I have a long, long, long way to go lol
Σταθης Σαπρικης I’ve noticed no color change. But I do store the pieces in the coffer out of light ... and there is a coat of lacquer to provide a barrier between the surface and the air.
Almost another year since I first answered this question ... still not color changes in the Padauk wood ... may just be the coffer, or where I play (not near sunlight ) ... but they still look as good as first purchased !
Hi Richard, In your video you said to contact you to obtain more details on how to apply the lacquer. For example, how did you protect the felt. The more details you can tell me the better. I don't want to ruin my new Chess Bazaar set. By the way, great video! Pls make more if you have other chess sets.
Silver Myth thanks. Sorry for late reply. I placed the pieces in a single row of about 8 pieces at a time, about 4 to 6 inches apart. I made a pass down the front at a 45 degree angle, then a pass down the back with the opposite 45 degree angle. The idea was simpler to get even coverage of “in between” areas with front and back. A proper amount of spray was thick enough as to not “run”, bit not so thin as to not be smooth (self leveling wetting action). The felt on the bottom was not affected, remaining dry the whole time, and sliding the pieces as normal. I let the pieces dry overnight in a storage room, closed doors, as to not to attract dust and debris.
Richard Walters great! Thank you for the instructions. I have bought several sets so I'll do a practice run on some cracked pieces first. Thank God for the excellent guarantee on defective pieces.
I'm looking a similar luxury pieces from chess bazaar, (the st petersburg pieces) and I can't decide between the st petersburg pieces and the the Arabian Knight pieces. hello, My I have your opinion on the board size ? My board has 2,5 inch squares, would this chess set be compatible ? Have you a board with this square size to try this chess set on ? Thank you
Christopher Youssef This set would be great on a 2.5” squares board. I also have a 2.5” squares board ( not this one - the one shown in the video is slightly smaller).
