Luxury Fashion Brands Under Fire for Stealing Designs of African Tribes . In the tapestry of global fashion, where colors dance and patterns weave stories of heritage and identity, one undeniable truth emerges: African fashion exudes vibrancy and style to such an extent that it serves as a source of inspiration for European fashion. Its trove of colors, intricate patterns, and timeless traditions have captivated hearts and minds across the globe, becoming a muse for designers seeking to capture its essence. Yet, amidst the awe-inspiring fusion of cultures, a disconcerting narrative emerges, casting a shadow on the creative landscape. Accusations have persisted for many years, suggesting that major luxury brands have appropriated and stolen iconic designs from African tribes.
African tribes boast a treasure of striking aesthetics, symbolic motifs, and ingenious craftsmanship, nurtured over centuries. These tribes, with their unique cultural identities, have inspired and influenced countless designers, contributing to the tapestry of global fashion. Yet, the line between appreciation and appropriation can sometimes be blurred, leading to replicating or misrepresenting indigenous designs.
For example, Louis Vuitton, a prominent luxury brand, has faced accusations of purportedly appropriating elements from the Kwele mask of Africa to create its iconic monogram. While it remains debatable whether this resemblance is a mere coincidence or a deliberate source of inspiration for the brand, undeniable similarities exist between the two.

If the shoe were on the other foot, guess how many European lawyers would be busting down the doors screaming intellectual property theft and copyright infringement?! Africa needs to take ownership of its designs gatekeep EVERYTHING and require those who want to use it to pay a licensing fee and the group/ entity borrowing it to cite and/or credit the work/design of the original artists.

Hmmm I wonder if they would take traditional Chinese and Japanes tribal cultural attires and desigs withonut the say so of their people and heritage foundation? These European fashion houses have ALWAYS drawn their desigh patterns and motifs from cultures of powerful origins/nations from centuries because every cultural homestead on the conitnent uses this to connect to one another at home and when we travel around the continent and beyond. like a family can travel from Benin in Nigeria to Soweto in SA, their shared designs in clothing will/can be used to tell tales of what happens in the northern part relaying to the family now in the southern part. Our Story is/was always told in what we share together and the travels by our ancestors before we had barricades known as borders enforced to decultivate and decultured. We now must resonate from the south, north, east west, create our tapestry of culture interwoven, take up our sigils, cartouches & symbols from all over that once signifies the abundance and the glory of Africa- the GREAT. Fashoin houses will continue to do this but we can stop and buy wear to elucidate our designs of tribes.

Chile, they have been stealing other cultures styles for centuries. Just look at videos here on YT saying "w---e girl kills African dance" or "w---e guy kills this African dance". Nothing new. Just take a gander at Sam Briton who literally stole the clothes from Asya Khamsin and got caught actually wearing them. 🙄

Did anyone see what I saw ? The Nigerian Government had ordered the Ghanaian people to leave the country in 1983, so they packed their belongings in those plaid bags, later used by the designer “ Celine” . My point is ; Africans can “kick” out their own, but they have welcomed the Whites, Arabs and now the Chinese. Lord have mercy !!! 😔 😭

The Masai "stole" that tartan print from Scottish missionaries. Do your research. The Masai did change the colors but the origin is Scottish. I don't believe in cultural appropriation when it is used only to virtue signal about black people being victims of white people. Nobody is complaining about Asia, especially Japan, S Korea, China who frequently take European/American aesthetics in pop culture. Of course not, its all about black people are victims of white people only.

Fashion is inspired by the whole world. This is a universal way of expression. There is nothing like stealing in design, you just take the best of humanity. If you can't understand art then... I'm quite surprised because most of the Africans I know are very intelligent people and well-educated. Smells like american mentality here...

No, if it belongs to a tribe any where . It shouldn't be worn by anyone else else . These are usually use to identify the tribe from another. Some tribes can inter marry some can't. It's tradition , it doesn't change . Anyone who takes a design should be sued .

Thank you Appreciate the typic As you said their is a blur line between culture appropriation vs appreciate Being an African I've seen a lot of other cultures taking inspiration from African culture and claiming it as their own without giving credit to African When it come to Africa it is demonized but not demonized when others accept and claim as their own Most Africans do not really mind about the culture appropriation they're just going about their business and focusing on other things and some Africans just see it as culture appreciation It is just a few like me that do care Mainly when it comes to entertainment eg Hollywood Hollywood appropriated East African culture in the movie "The Lion King" Profited from the movie and did not give credit nor royalties to East and South Africa where they got their inspirations from Only for an East African to make a t-shirt and printed "hakuna matata" which is his own language The fact that he was able to profit from the saying "hakuna matata" Hollywood wanted royalties 🤨 Try make that make sense 🤨 Others take from us but never give any credit nor royalties but want us to give to them Later they claim they want to give Africa charity + aid because they want to be seen as good but they stole from Africa
