After watching the viral video made by the channel ‪@RaisedMedia‬ I could not help but agree with some of the arguments there, while also feeling like more could be said about whether luxury fashion is for broke people. So, let’s talk about this in detail.
Do you think people from the lower classes vs the upper wealthy buy the same type of luxury? Do you believe in the dichotomy between new money and old money? Tell me your thoughts below!

As a millennial, this whole luxury discussion has been evolving my entire life. When I was a kid, before fast fashion and "luxury branding" became a thing, nobody was buying luxury (Hermes, Chanel, Dior, Gucci etc) other than people who had a LOT of money. Perhaps they were old money or new money but they were actually rich. Not just upper middle class, but rich enough to live in "mansions" or go to exotic vacations twice a year. Now, I see young kids, not even teenagers, from lower income families talking about how they want to buy luxury. Social media have certainly played a part, but I also think that the fact that fast fashion made clothing completely "worthless" in many ways has definitely contributed to how luxury is regarded. No actual rich person would talk about "an investment bag" because they have actual investments that make them millions.

@@marissashantez6051 there's definitely that use of the term. And many people build their wardrobe that way. But there's also a lot of people, especially in the influencer or "insider" space who constantly talk about investing in luxury pieces and mean their resale value. This is a very common argument when people buy certain pieces that are supposedly classic and will always be in high demand because of manufactured scarcity.

The thing is, at least for me, at what point is it enough? I have a pretty solid collection of high end handbags, shoes and ready-to-wear. I opted for timeless designs whenever possible because at this price point I don't want that stuff to look dated. So most of it doesn't have a giant logo on it and if it comes with a logo it's a design that's been around for quite some time, like the Fendi baguette. That said, from this year on I try to focus on experiences again, meaning travel or visiting a great restaurant, a concert etc. I love my luxe pieces a lot and I still have some items on my wishlist but no more bags. I have an Audi too, but I reach for my Jeep keys 80% of the time because it's fun! I buy the bags for me . They don't define me and I don't buy them to show that I have done well. Good content indeed. And allow me to express my two cents. I'm not drawn to luxury brands at all. While I have a comfortable income and could easily afford them, they simply don't hold much appeal to me. Aside from a few upscale business casual pieces I occasionally use at work, I don't feel the need for logos or quiet luxury in my life. I use my funds elsewhere. What baffles me is the tendency of people to look down on those who do enjoy logos, to prove what, that they know better? Everyone should have the freedom to spend their money on what brings them joy, without facing judgment. I firmly believe in the principle of people minding their own business. It's disheartening to see that this principle seems to have been forgotten by society ;(

Luxury brands are not fooling anyone, people like to fool themselves. 80-90% of items on runway shows go into production, and ANYONE can purchase them, you can just call the store, ask for appointment, come, see models presenting these clothes to demonstrate how clothes are intended to fit, and that try them on yourself. Each brand has in-store stylist who would adjust existing looks to your taste and suggest you accessories like bags, jewellery, etc. No one is hiding runway shows from lower class folks, these videos are not hidden . Anyone can watch latest Louis Vuitton collections and if you have enough money, purchase total looks from them. Those are just expensive clothing brands, nothing more, nothing less. What happened to just using and buying luxury items just because you like the design, quality and aesthetics it offers? You don't always buy luxury for status reasons. I personally buy luxury when I can and only because I like the aesthetics, as I don't find the same aesthetics and quality in supermarkets, fast fashion stores or markets. Not everyone buys luxury to show off ostentatiously, but rather to use something they know will last a lifetime of use. Furthermore, personal expression and identity are important. Creativity is also important. I disagree that wearing some logos when we are dressed in casual clothes every day is a poor thing. Even rich people wear logos when they wear casual clothes. Obviously I'm not talking about t-shirts with a big logo saying "gucci", "louis vuitton", "prada" or "versace". Even that I find in bad taste and tacky. But using, for example, a Louis Vuitton monogram or travel bag because you need it, is not at all poor. For example: when you go to a wedding or more formal event, the idea is to be elegant, refined and the clothes just speak for themselves. It's a matter of discretion and respect. It´s tacky to wear logo everywhere. Some logos are ok but with discretion, but no logos is a plus! Using logos on a daily basis it´s a different thing and has nothing to do with being poor. Luxury houses are not to blame for tasteless people misusing their pieces.

There are less known good brands that sell good or better quality items compared to big brands like LV with fraction of their price. Still not cheap, but not as expensive. Also for clothes you can hire a person to sew clothes that are more unique and better quality with less than buying from some big brands. These big brands are just more expensive fast fashion, really. But of course if you like their items then I see no problem with buying them. I have liked some brand items too and have bought some, but as a student, of course those have not been super expensive. The problem is really those people who buy them when they don't have money for them and just to have a brand item and not because they especially like the specific item. And for the logos, even the monogram is really just an ad in the end if many people know it. So at least to me nowadays if I see someone with LV monogram bag I will just see them as a walking advertisement.

I live in Atlanta, GA where designer brands reign. Several luxury brands have stores in two malls that happen to sit across the street from each other. I always look at who carries what brand of handbag and if it is authentic or counterfeit - as the latter is rampant. I find it interesting to see who is toting an opening price point handbag and who is toting something in a higher price point. Also, there is aspirational and inspirational tiers with many brands regarding handbags being made of cloth, different leathers and exotic materials. The bolder and bigger logo driven styles ranging from accessories and clothing to shoes and handbags are status quo here. I’ve been in a particular store known for their luggage and steamer trunks where I witnessed a woman pull a wad of cash from her bra as she peeled off hundred dollar bills to purchase one of their coveted handbags. This is who they cater to now. Classless people dressed as if they’re at Walmart buying toilet paper and dog food.

I made about 75% my clothes. The garments fit me like a second skin and made from very good quality fabrics. I sew with a lot of haute sewing techniques. Compared to luxury off the rack, mine is superior. I don't go after quiet luxury or conspicuous logos. My high quality leather bags usually come from small independent shops and my limit is $250. I do have a Birkin dupe my that I had made for me and the inside has good pockets and a keychain leash that prevents a black hole. On the back outside there is a zip pocket. The original isn't too practical but mine is. Some things I buy are from Walmart and some from thrift stores and some from Sears. My stretch chinos from Walmart are from the men's section and the fabric is sturdier. They have REAL pockets and the fabric resists fading. After 4 ears, they still look great and haven't worn yet. Fabric I shop for carefully and most are remnants, clearance and mill ends. This is about 65-90% less than original retail. I control the quality. I buy higher quality thread to sew with. My button up shirts are between 7-11 years old and still look nice. I don't dress to impress myself and my style ranges from Goth to Punk to business professional. Accessories are what dress the clothes up or down. I'm going older disgracefully 😊.

Luxury fashion is not the same for the rich and the poor. For the rich, luxury fashion is often about exclusive designer brands, high-quality materials, and intricate designs that are often out of reach for the average person. These individuals can afford to splurge on expensive clothing and accessories without worrying about the cost. However, for the poor, luxury fashion may simply mean having access to affordable, well-made clothing that makes them feel confident and comfortable. These individuals may not be able to afford high-end designer labels, but they still strive to dress well and express their personal style. In essence, the definition of luxury fashion differs greatly between the rich and the poor, highlighting the disparities in access to high-quality clothing and the privilege that comes with wealth. It is important to recognize and address these disparities in order to promote a more inclusive and equitable fashion industry.

The not rich customers would likely NOT buy the product without the logo all over it because it defeats the purpose of trying to look rich. I am not a fan of the logo in my face, with the exception of the original Chanel quilted bag with the double c's turn lock in black. That all said, I would never buy one anyway because I see these all the time on the cheesy reality tv shows. Shows where the cast of women are clearly not as wealthy as they pretend and half of them are frauds anyway, so I don't love Chanel or the other high end brands they always wear, the same as I used to. I just find it interesting that people would put themselves into so much debt to impress people they don't know with money they don't have.

Some of this is accurate, some of it is not. Things have changed so much and so quickly, because of the internet and social media none of it really matters. All anyone needs to know is that if they're not part of the 1%, they're one of bottom 99%. Spend accordingly.

Almost every clothing line has their lower quality/price lines to feed the masses. If people want quality over the logos then save money for the real luxury pieces. Spending money on the (nouveau riche) trash lines show people your class status to the ultra wealthy. Old money already looks down on new money so everyone else is pretty much trash. Flashy logos signify low end no matter what brand you buy. In my eyes logos are for teens who don’t know any better.

But if it keeps them broke, then it’s doing its job. They try to imitate those who have and end up, not having anything in the end, while those who have will keep it forever.

Yes… of course you don’t buy the thing with the big flashy logo, what are you, a walking advertisement? They gotta pay me for that. Always felt like this, it’s not about how much money you have, it’s about how much self esteem you have and how much of a show off you need to be.

Last night I seen a video of how hermes and other brand names was killing animals just for the leather. I love Hermès but I would rather invest then to spend all that money just for luxury. I love this company called Dasien I love their bags and I can look just as good carrying that then carrying a Hermes.

I think you got it wrong with side comment about people buying luxury goods before buying a house. That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. It is incredibly difficult and expensive all over the country to rent a place let alone own so I completely understand people who feel hopeless in that regard buying something shiny to make them feel better. I don't think they are "living beyond their means" or "broke". People are just trying to survive as capitalism continues to fail us in every way. Abstaining from buying luxury goods is never going to make someone "rich" or even transcend to the next economic class no matter how much propaganda you feed them. So I say let people buy what they want with money they've earned because they are going to work until they die anyway in a "free" country they doesn't even want to raise the minimum wage.

I always ask the same question Is something luxury or it's just some expensive name brand? Expensive does not automaticaly mean luxury, just an illusion. What is luxury about waiting in line for some mass produced items with mid quality confection or materials? Sure expensive brands may give the sense of exclusivity but isn't it just a marketing scheme? Sure some of these major name brands started being luxury bussinesses but our hyperconsumption culture and capitalist lifestyle just turned them into something ordinary that only have the reputation of what once where, a reputation that no longer live up to.
