I think there must’ve been an electrician strike at ITV over that weekend, as ITN and Thames News had to broadcast newscasts with the studio house lights rather than the more powerful studio lights on the following Monday. Fun fact: Night Thoughts was a Thames TV production, and the only programme which aired on LWT every weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

I remember playing games on my Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K in a dark bedroom, when suddenly I looked up and saw a bright orange glow, rising up the wall from my black and white 19" TV. It did not set on fire and thankfully only fizzed out and died, but it was a little alarming for a moment!
