I have been towing this boat and trailer combo for a couple of years now. I Towed it with our old 2009 Lexus LX570, with a Ford F250, a 2021 GMC Sierra AT4, and now with a 2017 Lexus LX570. People look at me funny sometimes when they see me casually backing it into the water at the boat ramp. They get their cameras out waiting for a QualifiedCaptain moment. But to their disappointment, the LX570 does great, even with a large boat and trailer combo like this.
In this video I just do a short 3 mile drive from the storage facility to my house with the boat in tow, and share some preliminary thoughts on how it did.
A 3/4 ton or 1 ton diesel truck definitely has a leg up on the LX570 and does better. But when it comes to any 1/2 ton truck or large SUV, the LX570 is by far the most capable towing vehicle I have come across in the last 10yrs. Nothing else has come close.
I will do a more comprehensive towing review later on along with real world MPG, more in depth notes and hints on usage of AHC while towing, and best practices while towing with the LX570.

For those wondering, the Weighsafe drop hitch that I use is this one, and I highly recommend it: amzn.to/43fgRm7

I just wrapped up a 1700 mile road trip towing a 33.5 ft camper with my 2011 LX 570. Even towed it up an over the Rocky Mountains on I-70 going from Denver to Salt Lake City which takes you from around 5k ft elevation to 10k and back to 5k. I could certaily feel the weight, but we were able to maintain freeway speeds the whole time. Love these trucks!

Sounds like an epic adventure!! Gotta love these trucks. They are so much more capable all around that people give them credit for. I'm still a big believer that the LX570 is better offroad in 90%+ scenarios than the LC200, too.

I want to pile on about how great AHC is on these rigs, it is an engineering marvel. I know the overland community requires different traits but around town and slight off-road action, there is nothing better IMO. If Brad can keep up with traffic from Denver to Salt Lake while towing a 33' camper almost sounds like a unicorn calling.

I completely agree. Even with overlanding, I am still confident that an LX570 do just as well or better than the LC200 without AHC. I think it is more of a nostalgia thing, or maybe a status thing for the offroad enthusiasts to say they have a Land Cruiser 🙂

I had the primitive AHC leveling on our GX460 and it was amazing. Only the rear height is controlled, but when I was towing or popping up a rooftop tent hours away from civilization the auto leveling is a game changer. No messing with distribution or stuffing rocks under the wheels. My next vehicle is going to be an early model LX570 with a supercharger and an LRA auxiliary fuel tank. I can't wait to experience that hydraulic system.

@@marcochavannethe gx uses air suspension in the rear whereas the lx uses a 4 corner hydraulic system, not air

@@shanet7511 Like its predecessor, Rear Adjustable Height Control (AHC) air suspension was offered on the GX 460 with an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). From the GX Wikipedia page. So yes, it has air bags that level the vehicle side to side and front and back.

The air suspension on the GX is entirely different from the hydraulic system on the LX.

Were you intentionally in comfort mode vs. Normal, Sport or sport + mode? Sport mode might fix that peppyness you're missing and tightens up the suspension if that is preferable for towing.

I didn’t change the mode. I think it was in comfort by default. I guess you are right in the sport mode, might be worth trying between them to see which one performs more to my liking. Great point! 👍

Thinking about getting one of these and getting rid of my 2022 F150. We have a smaller 24 foot camper, but with 2 kids and 2 dogs we can’t fit in the truck. My concern was the sway but it seems not to be a major issue. Any updates or changes in opinion?

With just a 24ft camper and family/gear you’ll be totally fine. Just make sure you have the weight balanced well and don’t have too much or too little tongue weight. I have towed all sorts of things with our 2009, 2011, and now 2017 LX570s. They tow better than any 1/2 ton truck I have had. Even the new F150 and new Sierra.

I have a 24.5' tongue to bumper travel trailer and traded a 2014 F150 Supercrew 6.5' bed with the Max tow package for a 2018 LX570 in February. I had put about 25000 miles towing on the F150, and have about 2800 miles with the LX so far and have towed through 30-40+ mph winds heading from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas. IMHO, The LX actually handles the trailer more confidently than F150 did. The F150 suspension leaves a lot to be desired with its soft shock tuning and lack of rear sway bar. I did have Bilstein shocks and a hellwig rear bar on my F150, and that helped a lot, but still wasnt perfect. The hydraulic leveling and adjustable dampening on the LX shocks really lock the trailer down. That old saying "I didnt even know the trailer was back there" really does apply to the LX. You get little to no feedback from the trailer. The suspension stays nice and flat with no porpoising or movement. It feels like the trailer is just along for the ride. The major positive to the F150 was the power the Ecoboost puts out, especially at high elevation. The 5.7L is pretty strong, but even my 1st gen 3.5L was noticeably stronger towing. I imagine the newer 3.5L Ecoboosts are significantly stronger.

That’s a beautiful thing to hear! I agree. I have had recent models of the F150 and Sierra, both with max towing packages and they did not handle towing the boat and trailer as well as our old 2009 LX570 or our current 2017 Lx570. It’s amazing how well the 4 wheel hydraulic AHC suspension system handles things
@Jay-me7gw
@Jay-me7gw Месяц назад
Oh the other major positive for the F150 was the fuel tank size. I had the 36 gallon tank. The LX570 only has a 24.5 gallon tank so when you are pulling a travel trailer, the range is not great. The travel trailers cause so much drag at freeway speed that you can expect ~9 mpg. That means you have

That’s a very good point. If you are doing any towing of a large load over long ranges the smaller tank definitely requires attention to your route. I think you can get an LRA tank with a much larger capacity. But that’s an aftermarket addition.

It says 7,000 lbs towing capacity on my 2016 Lexus lx570.
@NKPGarage
@NKPGarage 6 месяцев назад
You’re right. I mis-stated 6500. 2008-2010 was rated at 8500lbs. 2011-2021 is rated at 7000 lbs. the 2016-2021 got bigger brakes and slightly improved AHC so technically it is more capable than the 2008-2015. But the way they rate the tow rating in the US changed in 2011 so it is what it is.
