With over 3 million followers, Lydia Millen has been blogging for over a decade.
She very rarely does interviews, so I wanted to sit down with Lydia to get some insight into the woman behind the handle and dig into her life, her career & the criticism she's faced. She really opens up.
Lydia's book Evergreen was published in October by Orion.
Thank you for watching!

@@leilariley936 Actually, she doesn't have to do anything. She owes nothing to anyone coming here in a hope - not to get to know her - but to hear her struggling with questions about drama and tea about her, confirming their opinion on her. Of course she will respond in a manner that won't harm her any further. Whoever comes from the healthy place and is aware of how vile her hate community is, wouldn't expect her to say anything that would make her even more vulnerable and open to attacks. Internet is endless when it comes to choices of who we want to follow and like. She is who she is. Owing nothing to anyone. Needles to point the obvious - the moment she doesn't do it for someone, they can move on to creator who does. It's that simple.

It felt like a positive spin on everything, how a politician talks, but says nothing. Perhaps this is wise, not to be vulnerable, but I would’ve been open to understanding Lydia more, instead, it leaves things feeling more contrived. Went into this very open minded, I'd watched some of her videos a really long time ago but she was never a Vlogger I subscribed to. I was therefore unaware of all the drama surrounding her...but to be honest i'm 20min in and bored. She doesn't come across as someone who is actually opening up. It feels inauthentic and spoken through brand image rather than an actual human with a life that's shaped her. Grace asks questions that would allow her to open up and create a connection but the response always feels very surface. As someone said in the comments she would make a good politician or crisis PR person...spinning any question as a chance to present what she wants to be true and rarely what actually is.
@blueice011
@blueice011 5 месяцев назад
If she didn't say anything, how did she manage to spin things and to present them differently than they actually are? People came here with preconceptions of who she is, most of them from her insanely toxic hate community, with desire to grasp on anything that can be used against her. She knows that. And she is entitled to protect herself. She said quite enough, she just didn't make herself vulnerable in a way some would wished and came for.

I have watched her periodically for about 4 years. She is very pretty and it is fun to watch someone that attractive. But what she reveals does seem staged and nor genuine. Even the dogs, cat, chickens, the riding come off as props rather than genuine parts of her life. That’s how it SEEMS to me which may or may not be true. Lydia was a joy to watch years ago, before she moved into her current home. She was funny, self-deprecating, genuine, and totally herself. I think she had a great sense of style that was uniquely her own. She was beautiful and comfortable in her own skin, and I enjoyed every minute of her vlogs. Flash forward 6 years and I see a totally different person. To me, it’s been a very sad process watching her lose herself. We all change and grow over time, but I don’t view the changes I see in Lydia as being normal or healthy. I see a horribly insecure woman who is trying very hard to be seen in a certain way. I think her accent, the clothes she wears, the “interests” she talks about, and her projected lifestyle are all to appear wealthy and refined. In trying so hard to force it, she’s abandoned most of the authentically likable and interesting parts of personality. I chose not to watch her very often (maybe once or twice a year) and it leaves me feeling sorry for her. How I would’ve loved to have seen the real Lydia change and age authentically. I think she would be absolutely killing it. 😢

Ok…. Now I watched this woman from the start, however turned off when she changed her accent to posher than the queen. Trying to be money, but they aren’t… far from it in their 2015 home build…. Her man was in towie on the arm of Gemma Collins draped in gold paint and now his is Mrs buckets posh husband who also has a cringe posh voice. So sad to see that she thinks she had to change herself, so very insincere. And after reading some of the replies on these comments, looks like Lydia and Carrie are hard at work trying to defend themselves. Or it’s really a fan/cheerleader who clearly has nothing better to do but to respond to everyone who has criticised this woman who made a pregnant woman cry!

Lydia can't answer these questions properly, because she's trying to remember which version of events she has told about her life. On the one hand she says she couldn't live with her mother and her father lived miles away, but Northwood is definitely not miles away from anywhere. Also this old money Cotswolds aesthetic with the tweeds and the horses is horribly inauthentic. I think I saw a video of where she was gushing about buying an upright piano (that she can't play)for her mother (who she apparently doesn't get on with) and mentioned that she was going to put it in her house. Again nothing is authentic to Lydia - a piano she can't play because it looks good, a horseriding outfit for a horse she can't ride, and wearing tweeds in a country house that doesn't belong to her. It's horribly vacuous and lacks any true genuine reflection of anything that is her.

@@magdalenacwizyk1605It's not about "meeting" or "not meeting" mine or anyone's standards, it's about what I want to occupy my headspace at any point in time. Why is Lydia dressed like she’s competing at a horse dressage event? This is precisely why she comes across as inauthentic 99% of the time. I love the way ballroom dancers dress, does that mean I dress that way each day and play make-believe in the hope that people think I’m something I’m not? She says she doesn’t find happiness in the money, and actually I think that is quite insightful because she strikes me as someone who’s deeply unhappy but yet not brave enough to step off the hamster wheel and find out who she truly is. The money provides her with the high from each unnecessary purchase, and it enables her to keep up with the Jones’ just like every ‘successful’/‘relevant’ influencer (hate that term) needs to be, but what it doesn’t provide her with is inner peace and humility. She severely lacks both IMO. Not hating, just what is see.

This interview's failing stems from Lydia's inability to be absolutely specific about her answers. Grace, too, is also overtly vague whilst addressing Lydia's upbringing, learnings, and controversy. In part, the vague conversationalist theme throughout this interview is quintessentially tactful - eg, British. This was a significant opportunity for Lydia to come from a place of truth and vulnerability. She didn't take it. Instead, she opted to position herself as a brand writing an autobiography with decades of experience. She has 10. It's clear Lydia has a level of discomfort with vulnerability that's offputting to listeners. Her content is beautiful. Her substance is lacking.

So good to watch this interview and see Lydia in an interview. I've been following her for nearly 10 years and the very fact she keeps evolving, maturing and being authentic is what keeps me coming back to her content. Grace, may I just suggest you watch the balance of how much you talk about yourself and focus more on drawing out your guest. You're lovely, but if you interview, the focus has to be on them. If it's not an interview, but a discussion, then perhaps you need to clarify that.

She also explained how her parents didn't fix her teeth, putting them in a bad light but she has spent more than most earn in a year on Hermes handbags, perhaps she should have spent it on her teeth instead of holding an obvious grudge again here parents. She is not doing vlogmas this year and now tells her audience to not spend time on RU-vid but rather with family while choosing not to spend Christmas day with her family, especially her Mom. I could go on and on, just to explain why people get upset with her, it's not because of jealousy. Josie never puts anyone down, and shows pure joy in her everyday with authenticity.

@blueice011 5 месяцев назад
@@LolaMelck Do you know what kind of people are your favorite actors or singers? Models? You don't. Because they don't have cameras in their faces and lives every day, so that you can judge them. For that reason precisely. They have PR teams and spin doctors whose job is to create their public image that you will find likable. That's why we didn't have clue what political convictions our favorite movie stars had back in a golden era of Hollywood, what their real sexual orientation was, what their views were on anything of substance really, even their religion, descent or relationship status were hidden in order not to polarize the audience and to allow everyone to create their own idolized image of them, seeing them as fair game and daydreaming about them. That's business and money making is the the goal. Today, you can see into lives of people who work for digital marketing industry/influencers. And that's fine as long as you don't take their personalities and lives personally and you don't get invested too much in the whole thing that doesn't affect you and your life in any way. That's rather unhealthy. BTW - Josie's and any other influencer's haters feel exactly the same way about her. I'm so sorry you feel that way! Here are some things that I learned, hopefully this helps you! 1. We should focus on "counsel cultur"e, instead of "cancel culture". This means that when someone messes up, instead of canceling them, we take the time to help educate them so they can learn from what they did or said. Lydia mentions that this isn't true in all cases, if someone does something very heinous that is obviously a different story. 2. In our culture currently, there is this idea that if you fail you should either quit and hide yourself from the shame or you should be able to bounce back immediately. Lydia shared that there may be some value and taking time away, truly reflect and learn from the failure before processing it and moving forward. In a world that is so fast-paced, I find this to be a refreshing perspective. 3. She also shared that you can go very far in the world working with people that perhaps enable you or encourage you to go about things in the wrong way. She encourages people to take the time to really reflect on those that they surround themselves with to ensure they have a great team of people that are guiding them, loving them, and supporting them. There are lots of other nuggets of wisdom throughout, but these were some of the main takeaways that I had!

I followed Lydia for years and years, eventually unfollowed when she shifted to having more of a luxury brand just simply because it wasn't relevant to me any longer. I don't understand why she gets so much hate - she is beautiful and has a lovely life and I think people are simply jealous.. she's worked hard to build a brand and gets criticised for her every move, even in these comments, it's wild..! It's no wonder she is so guarded. She is doing things that 1000 other influencers & celebs do so why pick on her... people are allowed to grow and evolve! if her content isn't for you just don't consume it - if you don't like her, you aren't her audience! I genuinely feel for her - it was clearly a huge thing for her to do this interview. All the best to you Lydia :)

It's jealousy, she is gorgeous and it may look like she "has everything" when she has indeed worked so hard to get to her current life. Frankly, she's only getting started...❤

I started watching Lydia Mullen because I like the way she dresses and, like me, her favorite color is green. If most us are to be honest, her channel a guilty pleasure meaning we want to see how the other half lives. But god forbid she has a plumbing problem and wants to check into The Savoy to forget about it. She shouldn’t have to apologize for working hard and rewarding herself. Was she supposed to check into a Motel 6? No man would ever have to say he’s sorry for being financially successful. She’s not the daughter of an earl and she didn’t grow up in a castle. Everything she has, she worked for. She should have gone a step further and showed us what checking into the Savoy is like - hell, I would have watched it.

I had a pleasure of meeting Lydia and she is one funny, confident and elegant woman. She pursues life SHE aspires and that's why its so easy to follow her journey. I don't like to compare but for me personally she is arguably one of the best role models online for girls - wild in the teens, finding herself in her 20s and content and glowing in her 30s. The difference is - she did all of this online with thousands of people judging her every move. Just imagine if that was you. I know one of the arguments will be that she chose this but cudos to her that she did - look at where she is now! Fingers crossed for all your future successes Lydia. We are all here to cheer you on! ❤

I can't imagine the pressure of being so public. Never being allowed a meltdown. Everyone has made poor choices and can reflect and go on to do great things. I get so much inspiration from Lydia and Ali. Her taste doesn't have to appeal to everyone. Most content creators have had their ups and downs, it's how they recover that matters. I see her as having a very kind heart, and being very approachable.

No one forces her to be a public figure, but the promise of easy money and fame are more enticing to people like her. If this is truly so tough for her, she can just quit social media

@@isabritpopOr the public could stop being such a bitch to influencers. No one should have to stop being public because other people are petty and jealous of their money.

I saw a video on Rebecca Kelly's channel about what she did to the pregnant hairdresser. It's called "The real me | Lydia Elise Millen."

I truly enjoy Lydia Millen’s content so much! She is so well spoken, elegant and funny. And yet I don’t think this interview was what it could of been. From my perception is was advertised as a ‘Get to know the real story of Lydia Millen’ yet the questions/answers were quite guarded and dare I say a bit fluffy - we didn’t get any inside or new information that we wouldn’t be able to find on all her amazing vlogs or new book - I truly say this with utmost respect but I think this is just her persona, she still produces amazing content and has accomplished incredible things with her career. As a last comment, I can tell that Grace is clearly a very lovely interviewer but I’m not sure this interview was as effective as it could of been due in part to the differences between Lydia and Grace - Yes they have both been in the industry but in different areas/niches that left the quality of the questions to be wanting. Some food for thought :)

University? With three O levels? I like and admire Lydia, but young people should realise it's not that easy to get to university, even to study marketing. Nor to get a mortgage, for that matter.

It’s incredible how she changed her accent and her story and her style. From chavvy accent working in a strip club, buying fake books to put in her house to pretending she’s from money and loves classical music. Not someone worth loking up to.
