Lye-Heavy: Did I Ruin a Batch of Soap?!

After making soap for over a decade, I left out some coconut oil from this batch. How much? Did it ruin my soap? Is it safe to use?

This makes me feel better! 😊I've been making soap for a little over 10 years too, and just yesterday, I had my first batch ever overheat in the mold and overflow and make a huge mess. 😭 I got it cleaned up and hot-processed in crockpot (i am a cold-process gal... normally!) and it looks fine now, just slightly different end texture. Even very experienced soapmakers can have an "OOPS!" now and then. 🤷‍♀️😊

That is so true! I also had a batch about 11 years ago that I really thought I'd ruined, and I ended up having to "recook" it in a crock pot. It was quite usable, although a bit bumpy looking :) Live and learn!

You are so very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm STILL making soap (made a batch of shampoo bars just today), and am so glad to have this old skill. I hope you do try it! Lye is nothing to be scared of, as long as you take the usual precautions of glasses and gloves, and set the lye mixture outside and away from pets. Homemade soap is such a lovely thing to have.

I just spotted your video, love your honesty, I’m new to this and decided to have a go at my own recipe last evening as hubby is away, so I could make a bigger amount for a larger mould, I used the soap calc, but oh was/am I nervous, it is currently sitting for 48 hours but it might need longer because double size mould, , then cure before I will know the result. I think I’ll go back to using the recipes I have for a bit longer so less worrying. Luckily it’s all for me and family not for sale I don’t think I’d ever be that brave I’m 76. But it’s a fun useful hobby. And I only have the silicone lined moulds or silicone moulds in pretty cupcake type styles. Thank you

Good luck with your soap! It is a very fun, and such a useful skill to have, and homemade soap is so good and gentle on the skin. I hope yours turned out well. If it gels well, that is so key, and an indicator of good soap later. I love the book of soap recipes that I bought years ago, and I really trust their recipes and calculations to the gram. That relieves a lot of worry!

i 3d print my own molds in a soft TPU rubber with any design i can come up with :)

I know the lye you have says 100% lye. But you should really use food safe lye. Drain cleaner doesnt have the same safety standards as food grade. They may put additives in it to make it work better. Because they don't intend for human consumption they don't have to list additives.

Thanks. I've been making (and using) soap made with this lye for a decade. But I have recently begun ordering my lye online now, since it's so difficult to find in local stores.

Thank god for super fat!! I thought I messed my soap up today hopefully in about a month I will find out it didnt effect my soap at all

I made my first batch recently and went 0.3 ounces over what the recipe called for so I added 0.3 ounces more oil to be safe. Still not sure if it's lye heavy.

It is a worrying thing to do! You can test it afterward for that "zing" on the tongue :) But 3/10 of an ounce is a tiny bit of oil, and since you caught yourself, and added more oil, it's more likely you would be a little bit lye-deficient. But if you soap gels and cures well, it should be just fine.
