The US MILITARY CODE OF CONDUCT HAS CHANGED SINCE WW2...THE CODE NOW REALISTICALLY TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THAT EVERY NORMAL HUMAN BEING HAS A "BREAKING POINT" WHEN UNDER TORTURE. AND, IF YOU RELEASE CERTAIN INFO, ESPECIALLY IF THE "INFO" IS LACED WITH SOME INACCURATE LIES, IT WILL BE UNDERSTOOD THAT YOU SPOKE OUT UNDER EXTREME PAIN OF TORTURE AND WILL NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE! THIS IS A MUCH MORE REALISTIC APPROACH TO THESE KINDS OF EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES.
I wouldn't even judge him if he gave them the most important information. His life and family is more important than winning an aggressive war at the other end of the world
In fact, we can judge, HARSHLY, the Government that ignored their own Scientific Advisors. They knew perfectly well that it was a pointless charade making them follow that code, from their own experience on prisoners, and from the evidence of experiment.
Yeah I feel the exact same way. It's too bad that a rich spoiled brat who dodged the draft says he doesn't like guys who were captured. I'm sorry for turning this conversation political but I have no idea how anybody who serves in the military could ever support that clown.
The Code of Conduct is an ideal. No one is expected to live up to it under every conceivable circumstance. I have found no one who was taken prisoner that was courtmartialed for giving up information under duress. Technically, this man violated the CoC just by giving his ship and squadron, but he was never going to get punished for that.
@JarrodFrates the CoC is only meant to be maintained for a few days. After 3 or 4 days, ideally a week, any operation information you may have to give to the enemy loses its value. It's out of date. It's explained that at this point you go ahead and give them all the information that doesn't matter anymore in exchange for better conditions for you and other captives. Giving name, ID number, unit etc is actually viewed as a good thing now as the chances of the enemy using that information to contact the U.S. military with ransom demands go up tremendously when they have PID of a captive. What you don't do is cooperate during or after torture or if it feels like they're about to cut your head off on live tv.
I'm from the UK. Today is 6th June 2024. We have a WW2 vet in our village called Teddy, who travelled to France to be there for the anniversary. My 3rd child was also born today. We named him Teddy in honour of that brave man. Thank you to all veterans, from all allied countries, who put their lives on the line so my children could have a future.
Sir, you don’t have to explain anything to us. I have no doubt you did your duty at all times and conducted yourself with integrity and came home to your family proudly
I can't even imagine the hell you went through, physically, emotionally and mentally, you did what you had to do to stay alive, you did the same thing that whoever wrote that code of conduct. Hats off to you Sir, thank you for your service and thank you for my freedom.
Name rank an serial number. Dont hurt to tell lies, things that are very inconsequential, or your birthday. I think you did the right things 100% considering the circumstances. Glad you made it back, sir.
