I like your description of the love affair you had with the rifle. It was the same kind of love of Man with No Name, Clint Eastwood westerns when I was 18 that made me purchase a levergun for my first rifle. I had the opportunity to take it up to the range with my Father before he passed away and it is one of my fondest memories. And to believe people wanna take that away from us. That is a crime.

Hickok, was in attendance at the Creedmoor match held here in ireland in 2011, Ireland having competed on long island in the 1770's matches. Shooting sports went from strength to strength in the U S A, where as it's only in recent years here in ireland that we have been getting back to long range shooting etc. After decades of prohibitions on larger calibre rifles and pistols because of the troubles in Nothern Ireland. Have been enjoying you chanell for a few years, sadly we cant get permits here for most of the firearms you shoot. They wont even let us reload here.

I had a well-used "original" 1870 that my dad helped me restore back in the early 1960's. I was a Civil War afficianado back then. "Thinking of / dreaming of" being a horse-soldier, was on my mind a lot back then. Everything has been lost in the sands of time, except for an image of myself sitting atop a gallant horse on patrol, with my "Sharp's" in one hand, ant reins (over the saddlehorn) in the other. Wonderful memories. ¦-]

It's a beauty. I've been studying the Sharps replicas for a few years now, thinking I wanted to get back into one that is lighter and handy to just carry around the Compound and plink with. I've looked at C. Sharps and Shiloh when at NRA Conventions, looking for a shorter model that would tempt me enough to fork over big bucks. This one has surprised me, because even with the 30" barrel, it actually feels like what I've been looking for, a lighter, handier version of the Sharps.

No it's not. First recorded instance of the term being applied to particularly accurate marksmen is from 1802, eight years before Christian Sharps was born. "Sharpshooter" just comes from applying the adjective "Sharp" to the noun "Shooter".

Years ago 1980's .I was living in the Columbia Valley of BC.. One day out hunting we discovered an old cabin way back in a high valley. We found a Treasure Trove of Box's of Old G&A mag's. .and articals by the Great Elmer Keith. Where he was shooting at Camp Perry,Ohio's 1000 yrd. range. Using a 1873 Sharps 45-120-550. .In it he explained that when reloading [No commercal Cartage's were available at the time ] [1956] and he used original Sharps 3 1/4 or 3 1/2 Brass full length. with 120 gr. Black Powder. With a Paper Patched 550 gr. cast [Lyman] Bullet. But the Bullets before being paper wrapped . He Lubricated the Bullets with 1/4 inch thick hard grease. Made from Deer Tallow & Bee's Wax.. Melted to gather and pored into a pan 1/4 inch deep. Then Using a Damaged Sharp's Brass with the base cut off and placed each bullet backwards[Facing up}. and used it like a Cookie cutter. To cut the wad out and have it attached to the bullet base. He then wraped the Paper patch around the bullet and using a Lyman Die to seat the Bullets. He was shooting 6 Inch Bull's at 1000 Yrd.. Gord. Wilson.

It's so cool to see the real versions of video game guns in action and learning the history as well. The game Hunt Showdown features many guns and rifles from the late 1800's, including this one, but it's called the "Sparks" because of licensing I assume. We also find the Winfield (Winchester), Caldwell Conversion (Colt), Mosin-Nagant, Nagant revolvers, Lebel, Dolch 96 (Mauser C96) and more. They even added the extra pull you have to do on the bolt after loading up the Lebel to make the top cartridge sit right. That's attention to detail right there :)

The reproduction Sharps 1874 Hartford Model with a heavy .50-90 30 inch barrel weighs 14.5 pounds. Some are even heavier. Those big bison blasters can weigh more than an M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (17 lbs.). But the streamlined 10-lb. Sharps are much handier and don't kill you on long hunts.

A Question to all who shoot an 1878 Sharps made by Lyman/Pedersoli chambered for .45-70 Govt. I have ordered the Lyman/Pedersoli as an 1878 Sharps in .45-70 Govt, and expect delivery sometime in February 2021. My question is this: I have been advised by Hornady that that rifle will handle their 325 Grain .45-70 Govt LEVEvolution FTX Bulllet which they say is around 28,000 CUP. Lyman advises that the 1878 Sharps is 29007 CUP. But I am getting conflicting data from some folks who say yes, it's ok to shoot the Hornady FTX whereas others say hell no - you risk blowing your barrel. I'm wondering if those who say "Hell no," are confusing the .458 Belted .45-70 Bullets, designed for Lever Rifles such as the Marlin 1895, that punch out close to 40,000 CUP?? Can anyone add to my question by advising if the Hornady FTX as stated, is safe to use in the 1878 Lyman/Pedersoli Sharps??

Billy Dixon used a borrowed "Big Fifty" Sharps for his legendary shot at the Second Battle of Adobe Walls in 1874. General Nelson A. Miles had his surveyors measure the distance; they calculated that it was 1,538 yards or 9/10ths of a mile..

You are right. Isn't that a nice sound with those 500 grain lead rounds smacking into it. From MY arsenal, these are the heaviest rounds I have to sling at it, I suppose. Even a shotgun slug is not quite 500 grains, I believe.

hickok45 Just for interest, I have just put various slugs through my Armsan A612 semiauto 'shottie'; (BTW your video on the comparison between a pump action and semi not only sparked an interest to get a shotgun but helped me towards a semi - Thanx a mil for the info, your experience and objective opinions that you make available) Anyway back to the slugs; the first one that I put through it was a Winchester 1 1/8ounce. I got to thinking what would this be in metric which I think equates to 31,89g then I got to thinking what would this be in grains, if I am correct it equates to 492gr. I smacked a 25l water bucket filled with water at 65m, what a show - jeez they hit hard!

I found some 405 grain smokeless lead flat nose on Midway. A friend cautioned me on using too high grained bullet. In your opinion, is that round okay to use? You did not seem to have problem with the 400 grain smokeless or the 500 grain black powder.

Hickok, I've got a the Sharps 1874 long range model #2 with 34" octagon barrel, vernier sight with two sight mounts, the normal location and a secondary way back on the back of the stock. The sight mount in the back is for firing laying on your back, barrel placed between feet towards target. It has the windgauge with spirit level-front sight. Shoots the 44/90 bottleneck cartridge. Bridgeport manufactured with all the providence paperwork. Magnificent condition. Buffalo Arms is making ammo for me and I plan to shoot it a few times. What I can't figure out is how you utilize the spirit level, as you can't see the bubble when sighting through the back and front sights. Any ideas? Do you first level the barrel , then hold steady and then aim....fire?

I believe a real 1877 Sharps had the receiver milled out on the left side up to the boss of the breech block with the wood running up to the breech block, making both sides even. It also had a hole drilled through the breech block near the bottom right to left to further lighten the rifle.

Dear hickok45, sorry for my English in advance, I am from Poland (Europe) and I've got a Sharps 45/70 made by Davide Pedersoli/Spain. My Sharps got a double set triggers too. But there is a small difference between, my replica have an inscription on barrel "black powder only", because I am living in Poland as I said, there is no chance to purchase cartridges filled with black powder for 45/70 in my country, I am afraid that when I use for example: Hornady Leverevolution cartridge I will waste my rifle, this is brand new one. Could You tell my what do You think about this issue, maybe You had a similar problem in the past or You know about cartridges filled with smokeless powder but comparable/compatible (power, pressure etc.) with black powder cartridges. Thanks for help in advance, I am a big fan of the Old West too, cowboy action shooting is my favourite, Best Regards to You!!!

YES !!. I really wanted to be released movie of this weapon. But I'm still waiting for the 1852 model. If you can not find it you can buy it for pennies from a collector of Polish (after sealing the chamber and other enhancements that allow him calmly shoot). Or from Pedersoli (sorry for my eng but i using google translate)

Great video, yet again! Some requests: Show and tell: Smith and Wesson 460 Magnum revolver. Sig Neuhausen P210. Webley-Fosbery automatic revolver. Comparison: 460 Magnum vs 500 Magnum.

***** They (P210) are quite popular among field and precision competitors here in Sweden as well. They are supposed to be very accurate. I have never hade the pleasure of shooting one though.

Hey hickok45, Great video on the Lyman sharps rifle, I wondered if you ever had a chance to try out and shot the Chiappa Mini Sharps in 22 Hornet? I'm considering purchasing 1 for hunting in the future for small game and would love to see a video review on the rifle first. Not much on you tube about Chiappa's mini Sharps

Very nice review, the Sharps has always been one of my dream rifles.. 45-70 are the normal, but the 50-110 would complete my dream... until I wake up and realize that I could not afford it .... Thank you for a great review on a wonder rifle.

Hickok45, please accommodate me as reading all the posts on your site can be taxing, and I applaud you for such success. My question is related to the infamous movie "Quigley Down Under" starring Tom Selleck. Of course, the Shilo Sharps rifle profiled in the movie was caliber .45-110 with an extended barrel. Question: in this movie, a Vernier sight was used. Have you done a video using this sight?

Great video. Great rifle. Great channel. FYI Quigley s was a 45-110 in the movie in case it wasn't mentioned earlier. Love that movie.

Hey I have never shot a sharps rifle. Is it a hi kick back or does the barrel even it out?? Sure is a beautiful rifle! Great wood work!
@sergeantbigmac
@sergeantbigmac 10 лет назад
Wow! The wood on that is absolutely gorgeous! Idk if you addressed it in the video, but what kind of wood is that? Almost looks like Curly maple? Beautiful. Also a question on the double set triggers... Once you get the second trigger 'set' what is the trigger pull on the 'real' trigger? Like, how heavy? Does it become a total hair-trigger? Thanks...

Nevermind, he addresses the trigger in the video :)

You know that Nikolaus von Dreyse received the order for production of the final version of the needle rifle as early as 1840? All falling or slanting block breeches were actually quite obsolete the minute they were patented. I do however agree that the Creedmore Sharps is a relly nice-looking rifle ; )
