Join us for a walk around the beautiful Devon village of Lympstone. Our walk starts on the banks of the estuary with glorious views towards Exmouth. We make our way along Sowden Lane to the centre of the village. We explore the pretty narrow cobbled streets and see the cottages lining the shore. The maritime nature of the village draws holidaymakers to stay in the several dozen holiday cottages, and the Lympstone Sailing Club is a key leisure and social focal point. We take a look at the Lympstone Clock Tower, part of the history of Lympstone, it is actually possible to book a stay here! We pass two of the villages most popular pubs, the Globe Inn and Swan Inn. We pass the Lymptone Village train station and take a look at some of the cottages in Strand Lane. Our walk finishes by the Primitive Methodist Church.

Lympstone is a village and civil parish in East Devon in the English county of Devon. It has a population of 1,754. There is a harbour on the estuary of the River Exe, lying at the outlet of Wotton Brook between cliffs of red breccia. The promontory to the north of the harbour is topped by a flat pasture, Cliff Field, that is managed by the National Trust and used for football matches and other local events.
Lympstone has rail services on the Avocet Line to Exmouth and Exeter from Lympstone Village railway station.
It is known locally for Peter's Tower, an Italianate riverfront brick clock tower built around 1885 by W.H. Peters as a memorial to his wife, and for its tradition of residents drying washing on the foreshore. The riverside houses back directly on to the shore, with no continuous seawall, and the passageways between them to the beach are equipped with metal flood gates that are closed by residents when they are warned of high tides by a local alert network.
Near the village is the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM), the principal military training centre for the Royal Marines. The training centre has its own dedicated railway halt, Lympstone Commando, on the Exeter-Exmouth branch line. The station was originally private for the exclusive use of visitors to the Royal Marine Commando Training Centre at Lympstone. Exit was originally through a locked gate into the commando base but a foot/cycle path was built between the station and the commando base enabling access to/from the station. On 28 May 2010 a section of the Exe Estuary Trail opened between Lympstone village and Exton. This runs between the platform and the entrance to the camp so the public can now access the station, although the sign on the platform still remains stating “persons alighting here must have business with the camp”. The Ministry of Defence have accepted that the station is the property of Network Rail and as such they cannot prohibit members of the public from using the station, although the gate remains locked.
The Exe Estuary Cycle Trail passes through the village. The cycle route is popular for commuters and recreational cyclists. Prior to the opening of the cycle route the only direct route to cycle between Exmouth and Exeter was along the busy A376. The cycle route passes through the centre of the village bringing custom to the shop, cafe and pubs and adds to the vibrancy and sustainability of the village centre and its businesses. The Exe Estuary Trail runs around the entire Exe Estuary linking Exmouth, Exeter and Dawlish Warren, with fantastic views along the River Exe. The trail provides an exciting opportunity for people to experience cycling or walking around the entire Exe Estuary, appreciating the wildlife and passing through some beautiful riverside towns and villages steeped in maritime history.
The 1st Lympstone Sea Scouts Group celebrated its centenary in 2012. It currently has flourishing Scout and Cub sections. It meets in the Scout HQ on Cliff Field.
Lympstone Manor is an historical house which now provides hotel and restaurant accommodation.
Ralph Lane, equerry to Queen Elizabeth I, was born in Lympstone. He was a soldier who went with Sir Walter Raleigh on his second expedition to the New World in 1585. He founded a colony on Roanoke Island amidst great hardship and deprivation. He was later present at the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
Singer and lead guitarist of The Kinks, Dave Davies, lived in Lympstone in the 1990s.
