Lynnwood Link light rail extension set to start Friday, expects nearly 50,000 riders

Everything is on track for the long-awaited opening of the Lynnwood extension of Sound Transit’s Link light rail line.
Starting service Friday morning, Sound Transit anticipates the four-station extension will have a ridership of around 50,000 and get riders from Lynnwood to downtown Seattle in 32 minutes.
The extension will add two light rail stations in Shoreline, one at I-5 and 148th Street and another at 185th Street, as well as a station in Mountlake Terrace and the new terminus in Lynnwood.
Sound Transit leadership and civic leaders joined the media for a preview ride of the extension on Wednesday morning.

As someone who commutes early in the morning and my regular express bus to Seattle being eliminated, I certainly hope that Light Rail will be a safe experience.

I might go to Seattle sometime soon. I have been interested in seeing the city and also Link. Maybe when the east link connection is open and running through to Lynnwood, I'll visit the city and use Link. Even with a smaller network, I think the system looks great.

The original route to Sea-Tac Airport should have been like this where the tracks run along I-5 to shorten the trip. But the project was designed to "serve" many well-connected people who wanted to "gentrify" the Rainer Valley and profit from it.

I think it will increase slightly, but the real gain will be when the 2 Line opens. Unfortunately the problems with the 2 Line bridge segment means that they have less trains than they wanted.

@@ianhomerpura8937the Fentanyl addicts ride the light rail all day, the hop they turnstile and dont pay the fare. Then they sit and smoke Fentanyl on the train endangering everyone else on the train. Seattle is an open air drug market. They go there get their fix and then ride the lightrail into other areas to commit burglaries and crimes to feed their drug habit. Ive ridden it 2 times to seahawk games and both times what i described above happened. Its not a coincidence

Chicago has turnstiles and is not really different. Honestly, the L was probably less comfy than Link (people went through cars asking for money, which I've never seen on Link), though the L felt generally safe and Link almost always does.

@@vemsan No. But the financial case for turnstiles is unclear. It depends strongly on the fare evasion rate, which is not well-known but has probably increased substantially since the fare ambassador program has ramped up. It can help perception of public safety, but people can definitely evade turnstiles too (just look at MTA or CTA) and if there's no strong financial case then it's diverting funding from expanding service.
