LoL.. if you believe that about freedom, you don't know or understand American history. For instance, you did not know America survived without income taxes, and now we are taxed to death. That's just one example... "More freedom"... Bwahahahahaha... Buy a clue.

Jack Edwards, you are 1000 times correct!! Now I'm only 49 and never had the opportunity to witness Legends like Lynyrd Skynyrd for I was born in July of 1972 but from everything my father explained to me in great detail of that early - mid 70's time-period has always made me wish I was 18 at that period. Now in September of 2021, your statement couldn't be more true and I thank you greatly. Thank you Jack.

The Good Old Times are dead and gone. That‘s why they‘re good, because they‘re gone… i am 59 and I disapprove completely. Open your eyes and see all those brilliant new musicians. (Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers, Mandoline Orange etc.) And about freedom: These were the times of racial enequality and Vietnam and music was nearly completely by men. i feel completly free right now…

The guy playing piano was just a roadie for the band. One day while they were recording in the studio they all left to go to lunch and when they got back they heard this guy playing the piano to the song. They went strait into recording his piano playing for the song and by the next week he was a full member of the band. He never told them he was a classically trained pianist because he thought they would laugh.

I noticed the old tin Budweiser can on the piano! Back before aluminum cans came out. There was no tapered top like aluminum cans need for strength. The top and bottom metal sections were the same size. They had a band about an inch wide where they were welded together running up and down the can. If they happened to put the top of the can on so the drinking slot lined up with the seam we said "hey, I got a seamer" and we considered them "good luck". The tabs pulled all the way off on those early cans and many teenagers made long garland style decorations out of the collected tabs for their rooms full of black lights and black light posters. With 6 of those early cans you could make a tennis ball cannon. A little lighter fluid and you could launch a tennis ball hundreds of feet into the air. Every kid in the neighborhood built one and you could hear them booming all summer long. A can of lighter fluid would last for weeks.

This song is a break up song essentially. The guy is pretty much telling his lady that he is a free-spirited man who just cannot be chained down to the life she wants to have with him. He wants to see the world because he feels there's more growing for him to do and to see. He's telling her that he could never be right for her, because his free-spirited nature will never change, and if he stayed [there] with her, he wouldn't ever be able to be who he is by nature; he would be living a lie. He's telling his lady that it's best for the both of them if he moved on. It was great what they had, and while it lasted, but if he doesn't leave now, it will eventually go sour and not be as good as it is currently. So, it's best to just end it while it's good and they can both go forward remembering the best of each other. This is the crux of the story of the song. :)

The Oakland Coliseum [just a BART ride from where I lived] during the summertime in the 70s and into the 80's were hosts to famous rock promoters' Bill Grahams Day On The Green shows which were a series of mini all day music festivals headlining touring acts and one or two well known established Bay Area bands. That day the line up was; The Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the headliner Peter Frampton in that order with Santana being the only local band that day. Hell of a concert and lots of sunburns.

This is the first time I have listened to this song in over 40 years; as it had a much different meaning to we who were deployed overseas. It became an anthem (along with “Stateside” by Mel Tillis). I listened to this song in SE Asia many times when it first came out and counted down the days that my tour would end and I’d rotate back to the Land of the round-eyes 🇺🇸. Sadly, when I got home, all who wore the uniform were treated like anathema (to put it mildly). We were hated! I have this song on my playlist, but just couldn’t bring myself to listen to it…until you. I watched your reaction while reliving first time I heard this. Looks like one of the "Days on the Green" at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum. July 4th Weekend, 1977. I missed that one, but not my younger brother. This music was not my fiance's thing, but it was mine. I was in San Diego that weekend meeting my future Grandparent in laws. As an East Bay native, I saw many a great all day concert at this venue.

During the taping of this concert performance reaction, it appears as if it was very hot and humid in the house/apartment there for you. I hope that there was a fan, or an air conditioner, or a cold soft drink or cold juice, to help keep you cool.

Other bands absolutely hated to perform after Lynerd Skynyrd. They couldn't match their musicianship and intensity. They opened once for The Rolling Stones and absolutely killed it... slayed it. The Stones were furious.

I'm 61. I've seen Skynyrd 6 times. Always fun. Do some Kenny Chesney. No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems, would be a good start, but he's got some more uplifting, or deeper music thar your subscribers would appreciate. Skip she thinks my tractors sexy. Maybe The Life,or Boats. Capt.Bob
