This is truly the key to this song: “The child has grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb.” You don't have to be a heroin addict to understand this lyric and empathize with it. In my opinion, the song is about loosing faith in childhood dreams, childhood expectations for the possible and the realization that most of us are mediocre and average, despite the endless possibilities we believe were there for us as children. We go to work, we pay the bills, we are trapped and just not realizing it that we've become comfortably numb and accepting our station in life despite our soul's depression.
@davidmiller9485

Nope, Waters gave an interview where talks about this song specifically. He was ill and the company "doctor" gave him a shot of something to allow him to keep the concert on tract. This song is about that experience.

I’m a recovering addict. This song is the epitome of opiate addiction. I was constantly seeking oblivion. “Hello..is there anybody in there. Just nod if you can hear me..” what happens during an opiate overdose. As addicts we were seeking that comfortable, numb, feeling. We weren't raised this way. We are ashamed of our addiction, yet we continue to self sabotage. Such a sad, lonely, misunderstood place to be. At the lowest points in my addiction I had just come to terms with the fact that I was hopeless, helpless and on death’s door. I had made peace with it. The more I used, the more closed off and numb I became. I isolated myself, so I could die in peace and away from everyone who loved me. I was sick and tired, of being sick and tired. I was a horrible disappointment to all of them but I had no self control. “I had become comfortable numb” Grateful to be alive today. 10 years of sobriety. I have a daughter, a spouse and so much to live for. Every time I hear this song, tears stream down my face. It’s a reminder of how life used to be and how lucky I am to have escaped addiction’s filthy grip ❤️

And if you want to delve deeper, the reason the music is structure this way is because it is parallels the high or rush you get when taking drugs that make you feel a brief ecstasy, only to be dropped down again in dispair. They do it quite effectively in this song. This is why Pink Floyd's music goes way deeper than many people realize.

Totally agree, I have the same reaction with Dream Theater. "The Spirit Carries On" is a classic example. I am a drummer, I have played in various flavors of metal bands throughout my life, I have MANY influences, including Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, Genesis, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, and of course Pink Floyd., and the list could go on and on. I always value something that I hear, that touches my heart and soul in a meaningful way. Sometimes I hear a song, and read the lyrics and wonder, why didn't I write that? I tend to be the one that writes lyrics in whatever band I might find myself in. Not so much these days, 66 years old, looking to move to Central America to escape the American political insanity, perhaps rejoin a musical community on the other end. Maybe a bit of a "reboot" of my life. I don't really feel all that "old", just matured like a vintage wine, maybe ready to be enjoyed again.

It was very relaxing and fun with all your friends there chatting with the music so loud that you could barely hear each other but you could feel the music clear through your bones and it was amazing. Unfortunately, we all have to grow up and those days have been gone for me since I graduated in 1976. I still do enjoy their music very much.

"Did you guys just get instantly happier?" - it could be an intentional rollercoaster... the verses are in Bm which can be considered a "dark" key, leading to a very up-lifting chorus that happens to be in D major, a much more "positive" key... The orchestra and harmonies definitely add to it, making you feel as if you're floating. The choruses are played on something called a high strung guitar which includes an open 9th - so very happy sounding... behind it all you have the orchestra playing these descending "scales" in different octaves, that add motion. Beautiful song
@JFullerUCSB

I do think about that now, in my later years. I was filled with fear and regret most of my life, and this song was a bit of a salve for those feelings all these years -- until I was diagnosed with GAD. And got at least some pharmaceutical treatment for it. Then I was able to put it all together. All my life I knew I suffered from anxiety, but not depression -- not until I was placed on Zoloft and it cleared my head. Now I realized that I'd been suffering from depression almost my entire life, and now "Comfortably Numb" has become especially poignant. My only remaining regret is that I didn't know about this sooner in life, otherwise it might have turned out substantially more fulfilling. Alas, "The child is grown, the dream is gone;" but I'm in a good place now and trying to make the best of my remaining years on earth. All in all, it has been a good life, and I can look to the future now with a clear head. Now when I listen to "Comfortably Numb" I can just ride the emotion throughout the entire piece and come out the other end just going "Wow." Pink Floyd is perhaps the best prog rock band to come out of the 70s.

This whole album is one of the best metaphors for a good trip on acid if your set and setting is perfect, your dose is appropriate, etc. Such a beautiful, mystical, experience that's never the same no matter how many times you experience it. And just like this album, it too can't be experienced every day. It's just "too much" in an indescribable way. Just like she said-- Floyd is "a ride".

Unfortunately I don't remember the details because its been a while but I remember watching an older documentary on the band and one of the members was dealing with extreme nerve pain and they were concerned they would have to cancel the show because he couldn't function on stage. They had a Dr. come in and they should him with some sort of nerve block. Amazing song all the same.

Its not about heroin tho. Its about SYD being on drugs and not able to preform so the doctor giving him something... The person singing (walters) is supposed to be the doctor talking to him trying to understand what's happening and how he can help. My kids listened to it with me. They gained and understanding that great and amazing music was written before they were born and it's really silly to write it off just cuz it's older than they are. But many do. I grew up with rock and roll (I'm 60) and have been disappointed with the quality of music over the last 20 or so years. Older bands stuck together and play for decades because they are not just a group of players. They are a special FAMILY, they know how to interact musically on a level that casual players never experience. It's why the Stones, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Rush, and so many others are still around. Pink Floyd was founded in the crazy mid 1960s and if they were all still alive they'd still be playing. Gilmour and Waters still do. LISTEN to the older rock. Give it a chance!

Turn them on to Led Zeppelin's "Ramble on", or "Misty Mountain Hop" or Pink Floyd's music in 2001 :A Space Odyssey. To appreciate our 60s, 70s music they need to hear.
