You cannot go wrong with Lynyrd Skynyrd. They are the granddaddy of Southern Rock. They blazed a trail for other outstanding Southern Rock bands, many of them who were also from Jacksonville, Florida. Bands like The Allman Brothers, .38 Special, Blackfoot, and Molly Hatchet. Across the peninsula in Tampa, came another group that was influenced by Skynyrd who were simply known as Outlaws. The Sunshine State came up big in this genre of music.

James, Ronnie Van Zant wrote this song after Gary Rossington crashed his new car into a oak tree while drunk on whiskey. The band was drinking and drugging during this time and it was a wake up call for them. Ronnie wrote most of their songs related to personal experiences. He was years ahead of his time with his song writing talent. Check out Simple Man, Gimme 3 steps, On the hunt, and What's your name just to mention a few. One of the greatest band's ever.

One of the best bands of all time. Their plane crashed in 1977 killing the singer, one of 3 guitsr players and that guitarists sister. Basically that was the end of Skynyrd. They only had 2 albums released before the crash. They are still legends to this day!!!!

I came out the other side.Sometimes the path isn’t clear, but there is always a positive way out. Everybody can get their life back on track.

This song is about Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, who bought a new car (a Ford Torino), got drunk, and crashed it into a tree, then a house ("whiskey bottles, brand new car, oak tree you're in my way"). The band was supposed to start a tour in a few days, but had to postpone it because of Rossington's injuries. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Allen Collins wrote this song. They were not pleased with Rossington, whose drug and alcohol problems were affecting the band. The band fined Rossington $5000 for holding up the tour. Skynyrd made an effort to stay sober on this tour. Drugs and alcohol were banned from the dressing rooms. Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines were killed in a plane crash a few days after Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1977 tour started. Some of the lyrics in this song refer to death, and the cover of the album, which had just been released, showed the band enveloped in flames. This song features the famous whistle of Ronnie Van Zant. He learned to whistle very loud so he could call the dogs when he went hunting.

I have always been a big fan of Skynyrd and thought them to be a highly underrated band. I think the lyrical content fits great with the music, and it paints a dark picture of the struggles of addiction. With regards to the musical performance, it is a masterpiece of the blend of excellent drums, bass and three guitar solo tapestry. The solo near the end with the two guitars playing off each other to me evokes the good/bad side struggle of wanting to give in to and wanting to quit the substance in question. Also the very last guitar note that holds out and the end of the song makes me think of a heart monitor ringing out a flat line signal, indicating the loss of the battle with addiction. Probably thought way too much into the song but there you go. Lastly, within a week of the release of the album with this song on it, the band had a fatal plane crash killing 3 members and severely injuring others. The album cover showed the band engulfed in flames and was later changed after the crash. That also adds an extra eerie vibe to the song. Enjoyed the video, thanks for posting!

It's the smell of death surrounds you. It was written for 2 reasons, one the lead singer had a serious addiction and always felt he would die young. Second a band member got drunk and plowed his car into a tree being seriously injured, that's the intro part. Sadly it was released 3 weeks after Ronnie was killed in the plane crash.

That smell is the smell of death. Many people say they have smelled death on other people before they actually died, hence the smell of death surrounds you. It was supposed to be a wake up call to Rossington, even though all of them probably needed the same message.

That also prompted the boys to clean up their act. Alcohol and drugs were forbidden at the shows, on tour plane. They were cleaning up their act, and were in their mid 20s, Ronnie and Steve, late 20s and were maturing. Unfortunately, Ronnie, Steve and Steve’s sister, Cassie were killed later that year in a plane crash. Enjoyed your reaction.

That “smell” is like a southern idiom for referencing someone hell bent on self destruction (smells like death)... but not LITERALLY a scent or smoke. Most of the group were dealing with severe drug and alcohol problems. One member in particular, Gary Rossington (guitar) had multiple life-threatening car accidents just prior to Ronnie VanZant and Allen Collins writing that song. It was mostly about him but really about all of them because they were all trying to clean up their act.

"Correct me if I'm wrong..." You're wrong, and talking about the lyrics...many others have done this correction. "The smell of death's around you." I know the instrumental is hard to get away from, but you have to listen, dude. It's a warning song for all in abuse of substances.

Skynyrd had the “Three Guitar Army”....Allen Collins, Steve Gains, and Gary Rossington. As many said, this song is about Rossington. He is one of the band’s founders and ironically, the only living member left. Check out his interview when he talks about the plane crash in ‘77 and describes his friend dying around him. Very powerful.
