It's awesome to see some of the other Martial arts represented effectively in MMA. Kinda tired or Muay Thai/BJJ guys and Wrestling/Boxing guys. It's good to see something different every once and a while. Love to see more Judo used in the octagon, but that will prolly happen if more Japanese fighters come over here. Catch Wrestling is awesome as well.

I watched a few of these dvd instructionals. What he teaches, he really does use these moves in his fights. If you watch his instructionals and then watch his fights again, you'll pick up on his material. Rashad Evans should have studied these dvds before facing Machida.

Keep in mind his dad/coach, Yoshizo, is the highest ranking shotokan teacher in Brazil. True, it matters more how good the fighter is, but learning under such knowledge in any art for 20+ years, and from family, can make a difference too. The Gracies are another example of this, great fighters who had a wealth of martial knowledge in their family to draw from. Of course, that's an exception to the rule. Too many dojos fail to adapt their arts to the needs of today like the Machidas and Gracies.

the pivot counter straight left is pretty much his go to move he can also set up his trips, or land a devastating punch when the opponent fully commits to an attack.

beautiful to see an ancient art of karate can still be deadly. His BJJ is phenomenal, and its very nice to see him use karate as his striking, not like 99% of MMA with kickboxing only.

The same principle can also be applied to leg kicks but instead of a retreating jab, Sensei Machida could use a retreating forward knee thrust. When the knee is bent and thrust forward using the point of the knee it is a very hard hitting surface and very effective against low roundhouse kicks to the thighs. Block by attack and detroy. The knee method requires accuracy but unlike going shin to shin does not hurt as much.

When you back up in a fight, you aren't running, anyone who says you are is just dumb and wants to see you get KO'd. It's smart to back paddle and side step. it's avoiding damage that can be inflicted to you.

Leg kicks are very hard to evade period. That is why Shogun used them. He never intended to finish Machida in the first place but win by decision through outstriking him. Low kicks and keep his face covered for reverse punch.. However looking at it now, Shogun has a even bigger hole in his plan that Machida didn't use to his advantage.

Machida is Shotokan karate black belt, traditional Japanese style, for years other styles slag us off saying we're too rigid, long stances, not strong etc......funny how we go into UFC and win! No one style is better or worse than the next, it's all about the heart and soul of the fighter....SPIRIT first, TECHNIQUE second.
@TroyNaumu808
@TroyNaumu808 13 лет назад
a good martial artist will use all ways be they footwork, head movement or blocking / parrying. it will depend on the situation and the energy that your opponant gives you. Blocking can be a effective offence as well. If you are going to block simultaneously attack at the same time or use a hard style block (forearm or elbow). Or as in the case of Sensei Machida use a retreating jab as your block.
@LuqmanNaq

Type in 'Lyoto Machida on George St pierre', he states the style is Machida Karate. His father said he had to modify his karate to compete with bigger braziliians. You can take exception to what Lyoto Machida and his father say themselves if you want .The Machida training methodology is clearly different from most shotokan schools, type 'Machida training', then type in 'Shotokan karate' to see the difference for yourself... Aliveness baby!

im a black belt in shotokan karate 2¨nd dan. And yes i feel you there. People think karate is a gay sport but it really looks like it to when you go kata or basic groundgame. But again its nothing cooler to watch then when people really can do fancy things like highkicks and move fast. Karate is my life atm and i love it. good comment =)

In my opinion the jab is just to gauge your reach. You throw the jab in intention that it will be blocked then you come with the right hand if you are conventional or left hand if you're southpaw to whichever opening you see fit. (It may be face, body, or groin, there is no rules to street fighting)(The person with rules is the one who looses). LOL. Depending on which hand and how you throw it will dictate the fight. Just to Let you know Machida is about to be one of the greatest to fight in mma
@greatsea
@greatsea 14 лет назад
@NinjaWarriorDude -Cuz its a retreating move. Shogun landed when Machida attacked. He paid for it but it was the best strat. to give him an edge,'counter-counterattacking'. Lure Mach. into counterattacking, then nail him low when he opens his defense, meanwhile covering his face. Machida was moving the wrong direction for what Rua was doing. Anderson saw this at once and said it was easily correctable. If M. fixes it I can't imagine any other thing Rua could do that would work as well.
@marcelo1489

@greatsea actually there is such thing as Machida Karate..when yoshizo machida moved to brazil to teach and compete in karate competitions, he realized his 5'5 stature would be a disadvantage against taller brazilians, so he altered shotokan karate to cater to smaller fighters attempting to defeat a larger fighter..similar to gracie jiu-jitsue. the stance is a little different

@shoulung

there are some differences (there is a lot more thats the same than different) shotokan prefers deep stances while shukokai likes shallow stances. shukokai uses more of the double hip twist than shotokan. Shukokai is primaraly based out of tani-ha shito ryu. shotokan is actually an mixture of the old Okinawan styles. the idea of shukokai is to use natural body movements in fighting. shotokan was founded to be the unifying organization of all karate in japan.
@TroyNaumu808
@TroyNaumu808 13 лет назад
If Sensei Machida uses this evasive movement in the form of a circle like in aikido or in Kali-Eskrima it would make this evasive footwork even more effective than going in a linear straight line. That way you are always on the opponants side where he has little power or on his six where he has almost no power due to forward momentum.

@tman229 Even machida's father publicly stated that Shogun has been the first person who found the 'weakness' in Karate (ie. taking advantage of lyoto's footwork and feeding him leg strikes). Shogun's a versatile fighter in terms of stragety he can play it patient and technical (UFC 104) and berzerker (Pride). War Shogun! Now he has the confidence, he's gonna win next time. I doubt either of them are going to be content with letting it go to the bell, I can't wait!

He still fights using Karate techniques for attacking, footwork, timing and distance. He also trained BJJ and is a black belt and trained Sumo and Muay Thai. Also his father is from the real Karate school which is JKA. So he learned from the pure technique not watered down by commercialized BS and Mcdojos and stuff.

Bought the set. Was expecting alot more. I was disapointed, I really thought it would be an in depth instructional systematic breakdown of his footwork/angle style. Nope. What you see in this vid is what you get in the set. Im dying to find a good source of info on using angles; learning to hit and not be hit(as much at least).
@ibclappin
@ibclappin 14 лет назад
because he's also very good at BJJ, and just a very smart and strong and fast fighter. he doesn't get hit. he kicks people in the head from up close. if he hasn't officially trained as a boxer that doesn't mean he's not trained in boxing. basic boxing is standard in MMA. he knocks people out with uppercuts. how much uppercutting do you practice in shotokan?

I wasn't talking about the techniques I was talking about the training methodology. Do your friends strap on shin guards, etc and do drilling with as much realistic timing, distancing and resistance that Machida does? Do they use Thai pads in a realistic manner like Machida? (not just holding them static for people to whack). Watch his training vids, the pad work alone is brilliant, I really wish I could learn Machida Karate, their methodology seems progressive and functional.

Machida is the best
@greatsea
@greatsea 14 лет назад
@marcelo1489 -Tell that to 8th degree blackbelt Takayuki Mikami, a legend in the JKA, who is at least as short as Yoshizo, and who has been teaching Shotokan for 50 years. I've met him. He thinks the phrase "Machida Karate" is amusing. Yoshizo has made no alterations to Shotokan that didn't already exist. It's a matter of emphasis, not alteration. Shotokan is a highly developed method of combat with a vast array of techniques that may or may not be emphasized, depending on the the instructor.

Would it be wrong to speculate, that part of Machida's strategy is to have a stance that has low hands, to seem like he is open, and lure opponents into a trap?
@tman229
@tman229 14 лет назад
You're really jumping the gun on the outcome. Like I said leg kicks are hard to avoid so it works on hitting even Machida but it took dozens too many to just slow him down a bit. Plus also like I said, Shogun had one big flaw that Machida didn't capitalize on which was concentrating more on the body. Everytime Shogun threw a kick, he would automatically cover his face since Machida always counter reverse punch their thus leaving him wide open to body blows, sweeps, or whatever he can use.

Where did I write that he doesn't use karate? My point was that he was a MIXED martial artist, and has to be to compete at such a high level. Some people seem to want to paint the picture that all you need to do is point fighting and you can dominate and you can be UFC Champ. Shogun will win the rematch. WAR SHOGUN!

@anhkhoinguyen Kata isn't akin to Shadowboxing, shadowboxing is a visualization tool used to enhance fighting attributes. The movements used are the same they use in a fight, the movements in Kata are not the same movements you would use in a fight, however the right cross the boxer throws in shadowboxing is a similar movement they would use in the ring. Great form of calisthenics though.

A overhand is very much like our Kahp Choih which is long fist swinging type of punch that is not really a lead off technique and better suited as a finishing technique after you have set up the opponant with one or two other techniques. The overhand is not good as a lead technique becuase it is difficult to make it non-telegraphic and takes time to reach its target than most other punches but what it lackes in speed it makes up for in power.

Because taking a fight to the ground is extremely dangerous in a real life-or-death scenario. There are too many ways to for a skilled killer to end your life as you try to take them down. You see lots of groundwork in sport fighting because you're not supposed to kill your opponent.

@LuqmanNaq -- That is called MMA training. He's a mixed martial artist. That is what he does. If that is what people mean by Machida karate then I think the word is gay. There is no such thing as Machida Karate. There is the Shotokan his father teaches. Then there is the incorporation of it into the kind of fighting trained for in MMA competitions. I don't have a problem with the use of the term though, I just think it is media morphology more than an actual Shotokan "spin off".
