Lee trained with grapplers. That's what was one of the basis in the Tao of Jet Kune Do. He was the first recorded at least Mixed Martial Artists. He was more than just a fast light weight. The man's art was a culmination of all he had seen in tournaments, street fights, Judo, Boxing, Wing Chun, and yes...wrestling. Had he known about BJJ he would have learned that too. Don't short change him brotha. For the time...he was the best we had.

The irony. Anderson Silva's Pak Sao and Lap Sao actually look pretty good. Even when he's joking around his technique is still awesome. I guarantee if he wanted to Anderson could use pak sao or a similar JKD/WC technique in the cage.

Silva impersonates people really well and seemingly without needing to practice, he just 'does' it and it turns out fully recognizable. I wonder if this somehow helps him in fighting? Maybe he has just been 'impersonating' a great fighter all along? =P

You're right. Take Jack Dempsey, a great heavyweight boxing champion who cross-trained in wrestling and judo after his retirement from his professional career. His work and fights greatly inspired Bruce Lee. For example, there are similarities between "Championship Fighting : Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense", a book written and published by Dempsey in 1950 and Bruce's book "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" published in 1975.

That would be a fight I would pay millions to see.

You know there are a lot of people saying that bruce lee "A 135 lb man with a limited ground game" could not beat a "220 lb man, muay-thai and jiu-jitsu specialist" But if they had any knowledge of bruce lee and his style, than you would understand that when he died bruce was just starting to get into ground game, and expanding his knowledge or other martial arts like muay thai... And he was the fastest thing alive... Delivering two kicks in the time it would take someone to throw a jab...

@aliperto7 I believe it was an obvious hyperbole hence I did not take the time to state it. The main point was - just because he was light doesn't mean he was weak. He is only light because he had very very low body fat and was as strong as a 325 lb body builder

noobwithanrs i totally agree its like that when it comes to street fights people don't know till it happens that u can't actually have especially with big guys so many atacking u at once theres not enough room an speed is a factor i wouldn't doubt u train for speed str and cardio, bruce was so fast because he had tons of muscle but no mass in it, and obviously no fat either which will make a much faster punch and obviously powerful. as much as i agree it really does depend on your dedication

Oyama Sensei was great, an asset to the Karate community. All I ask is what other arts did he tie into Kyokushin to make it well rounded? We found out in the 1st UFC what happens when your unprepared for grapplers. Is Kyokushin prepared for ground fighting techniques and take down defense? If not, the title still belongs to Bruce. He was a sponge. If he was alive to see what was effective, he would have adopted it.

@Andrew32488 1st ground game doesn't matter if you can't get the other person to the ground 2nd bruce lee was a genius in all martial arts so who says he couldn't grapple 3rd regardless of what weight, you will still get knocked out if you get hit in hard enough in certain places

@chiconspiracy he was a great fighter as well though with really great skills. He punched and kicked faster then cameras could follow, so during his movies he would purposely only do like half speed so that his actions were actuly caught on camera, for his size he was amazingly strong. Speed + Strength + tons of knowledge on multiple martial art styles and knowing the best moves from each, would make him a very great fighter.

If you ignorant trolls have watched any Bruce Lee video it is clear that his speed and power to weight ratio alone would already put him way ahead in his weight division. (130lbs) His kicks are lightning fast, comparable to the handspeed of a MMA heavy weight and his punches couldn't even be captured on video during his time. There is a reason why Anderson Silva, Jon Jones and most of MMA fighters look up to him.

@N0thinglasts1 Although many of his moves were focused on completely stopping your oponant and had high chance of seriously injuring the other person, which in sports like ufc or other fighting competitions would be banned, such as biting, hitting vital areas such as the neck or balls ect,.

Haven't watched him fight you say?! I'm obsessed! LOL! I've seen all his fights except the rematch with Okami (It's impossible BTW to see it at the moment). He is *forget the haters and critiques* the best known fighter on Earth. But stills his speed (forget the movies) is not on par with Bruce's. Not saying he may not beat Bruce in some other dimension where Bruce is still alive and happens to be 33 yrs and right now, is about to fight Silva live in some alternate reality MMA super fight.

You can't compare 2 people from different ages. If you put the founders of Taekwondo or Karate or BJJ in UFC, they would probably still lose at their prime, because martial arts has developed so much since. But that doesn't mean we can overlook their contributions. Bruce Lee is one of the pioneers in mixed martial arts. His movies/teaching/philosophy inspired so many great martial artists. Simply comparing his skills to a modern fighter is ignorant.

@BigBlackSphere i love mma, and bruce lee but he was a martial artist WAY ahead of his time. look at the book, buy it! its totally worth it. he covers how to pass the guard, submissions, defense and his striking is obviously world class. would he lose to ppl in the ufc? yes, SOME of them. but he was also a bantam weight (bantam is 135 right?) he usually fought ppl both bigger and stronger than him. so i wouldnt say he CANNOT beat anyone because if he was young and alive i think he could.

If someone were to paint Anderson completely green, he would look like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

Oh, and yes, Bruce does those punches as Silva portrays them, only Bruce was about 2 x faster ;-)

@Andrew32488 Lee's ground game may have been alot better than you think. Check out his book "Tao of Jeet Kune Do". He has several illistrations of ground submissions, breaks down the guard and passing it, aswell as afew jiu jitsu sweeps. I'm not implying that he could beat Silva or anyone else in the UFC, only that his ground knowledge wasn't as limited as you think. Movies or not Lee was a bad bad dude! It would be interesting as hell to see him compete in MMA.

Even the best fighter in MMA cannot truely impersonate Bruce Lee.That wasn't nearly as fast and skillfull as what Bruce did. But I'm glad to know Anderson is a fan of Bruce Lee too. My favorite fighter is a fan of my all time favorite fighter. LOL!

@Spandexius1 I'm actually not too familiar with the art outside of hearing the name of it along with arts like Pankration. But I'm not saying there weren't other well rounded arts. I believe the debate was just "was Bruce Lee really as awesome as the media portrays him to be." Outside of catching bullets with his teeth or anything else completely fictitious I'm just saying he was the man, a master, and one of our lifetimes first Mixed Martial Artists.

Actually he beat three by unanimous decision: Tetsuji Kato, Hayato Sakurai and Alexander Otsuka Still I agree he had some difficulty against japanese. Maybe it`s because they rely more on technique than on strengh, unlike many (not all) western fighters.

@Tab54o When you watch Bruce Lee demostration he never look as fast as he do in the movies. I study acting. Sometime in movie when you fasten up the camera others cannot tell because there are many type of camera speed. You can fasten up the camera where it look natural. If you study acting you will know what I am talking about.
