I dont like silent protags either. Byleth in 3 houses is probably the best way to do it, and even then i only tolerate it. Very intrigued to see more of them (well her in my case) later this month
@@abrahamdavidgonzalezgonzal364 I just said Corrin had a personality, not that the personality was any good. Even then, a bad or annoying character is more memorable than basically no character at all.
@@mihaimercenarul7467 WHAT how was shez bullshiting he literally complemented her the same way she did him then she got mad so he called out the hypocrisy
I love this dialogue *SO MUCH* . In three houses, when Lysithea had this kind of discussion with someone, she was so aggressive that the other person would often end up apologizing just to calm her down. That, or they would calmly explain to her that they weren't trying to be rude. Shez is one of the few who ACTUALLY fights back and calls her out for freaking up too much. You know, as an equal might do. The next supports are gonna be *SO* entertaining to see. I'm also interested in seeing what is going to happen once Shez discovers WHY Lysithea becomes so childish when talking about her age. Lysithea is by far my favourite character and this support is just *GOLD*
This explains why I often hated her in 3H, but LOVED her here. In 3H, she just walked all over everyone like an absolute jerk. But when Shez actually gets to snap back, she comes off simply petty, rather than cruel. It makes a big difference on her likeability, oddly
Right? Their comments weren't even diminishing or minimizing her intelligence. They're just stating they're impressed cause she's young and already very intelligent.
The fact that the actual part of Fodlan Winds what intensifies plays when Lysithea snaps after Shez calls her a kid is perfect it sent me rolling. She might be my favorite Deer along with Marianne but this was freaking amazing. Edit: nvm it’s tempest of seasons took me a few rewatches to find that out.
@@petery6432 when I saw Byleth actually speaking with a VA and all I almost jumped in joy and the fact that they speak very little just makes it more amusing to see
@@superbeta1716 When do you make choices like that? If I remember correctly, Byleth only had different flavors of yes and no responses. That would add nothing to a conversation at all.
@@superbeta1716 Cap, Byleth is an utterly lifeless character who gets shoehorned into the role of chosen one. Even them being a professor is a highly unusual circumstance that isn't really warranted. Not sure what you think is 'annoying' about Shez when he doesn't seem all that different from other FE protags. The biggest difference seems to be he doesn't hesitate to call people out on their bullshit which is honestly refreshing.
@@superbeta1716 With Byleth you have the other characters talking AT you for multiple lines on end, in an unnatural manner, with the player occasionally picking a dialogue option for the characters to react to, and go off for multiple lines again. Silent protagonists, even the popular ones, are rarely ever done well from a narrative standpoint and Byleth is no exception. Gutting 90% of the personality from a character so the audience can impose their own personality onto them, while it may improve engagement with the audience, will always be to the detriment of the character's actual writing. Established characters, even assholes, who functionally work just as any other character, will almost always be better. I hate using this word, but it's unironically cope when people act like Byleth, or many other silent protagonists, are actually good characters.
@@ThiefofCrystals I mean tbf Byleth's lack of qualification is part of the whole reason the game goes as it does, they're just shoehorned in there because Rhea couldn't think of a better idea, not because they'd be a good teacher (which is something forgotten halfway through the game, but still)
It's hard to believe that Three Houses is going to be three years old this year. Time sure does fly. I'm glad to see Lysithea making the cut for Three Hopes.
@@autisonm Once you get the DLC there’s a “Side Story” quest you have to complete. Once it’s done go back to main story and they should be in an area called “abyss” you can get there by a shady guy right beside Byleth’s room. You can only get them before the war arc tho
Haven't played Golden Deer in the demo yet. But this is brilliant. Shez does a great job at showing Lysithea that she does act hypocritical and childish.
@@mihaimercenarul7467 Yes, she is. She apparently praised Shez for what he does at such a young age. But acts like a maniac when Shez does the same and praises her. That's hypocritical.
@@mihaimercenarul7467 That's literally what the video above says! Even Shez says Lysithea is being hypocritical by praising his age when he can't praise her age. But whatever. Ignore the video, buddy.
"Wow you're very mature, hard working and better than most people, *despite being a kid*" Lysithea is so self conscious about her age that even when she is compared to be better than others as a kid she flips out. But the icing on the cake is she also compared Shez based on age. G;ad somebody finally just outright told her she is younger, this is a fact. I totally forgot Petra is the same age as Lysithea, but she doesn't have any problems.
Mostly since lysithea is looking younger than petra, Claude teases her a lot and for some reason everyone mentions her as a child while no one does to Petra. But the main reason is frustration and desperation since she will die young, never grasping the life of an adult
@@mihaimercenarul7467 I know the dark stuff about her, it's just she is so self conscious she misses the point. And it's just strange that it took a whole-nother game for someone to tell her flat to her face like Shez does. Everyone else skirts around it or let's it slide due to 'teen years' like Raph does. I mean it's mature to do that, don't get me wrong but not a single person calls her out for it until now. It's kinda funny. I know it's cause she has limited time and is trying to keep the perception she's older so she can complete her goals easier when it requires others. But it gets to points where she almost wants to find a sliver of a reason to become angry about it. Despite showing many 'younger' qualities by her own definition.... like eating cake, something kids definetly only do.
Young women also start puberty sooner than guys do. That's why Petra looks older than Ashe or Cyril despite being around the same age. When I went to prom freshman year, people thought I was my prom date's younger brother. With Lysithea, she likely has body issues due to her short stature and appearance. Most characters in anime, manga, and games are actually around the same age as Lysithea. She's the same age as Ichigo from Bleach and Sonic the Hedgehog.
@@Admiralkirk95 that's one of her flaws, since she is mentally pressed by the thoughts of dying young, never grasping adulthood, rolling into a military academy not even for hers sale, but the sale of her family, puts a lot of pressure on her since she views herself as a vessel meeting it's expiration date. Of course she would like to life a full normal life, but she doesn't seem to realize how to achieve that, and focuses all her hours studying and training, sometimes eating cake as a coping mechanism, ignoring people believing that it would waste her time.
This support in a nutshell: Shez: I didn't call you a kid on purpose Lysithea: Yes you did Shez: But you did the same thing to me though Lysithea: That's not the point
Two years time skip makes her 17, the maturity in that varies in prospectives. Some say that’s a kid, some say that’s a teen, and in some places it’s legal. Lysithea, as lovely as she is, was being very immature here.
@@idreadFell365 I think Lysithea is a prime example of someone who has been forced to "grow up" a lot faster than she should, but she hasn't MATURED yet. she's had to cope with a lot but hasn't yet developed healthy emotional reactions or anything like that. it's why I like her, she's interesting.
I love lysithea and she’s a great character. But I’m so glad someone finally called her out on being a hypocrite. It’s good writing to point out a character’s flaws even if they have a reason for it
@@rakurai4953 idk like if the box art is anything to go by it's seems it's Arval VS Sothis or Shez VS Byleth. I think Byleth and Jeralt will be hired by the enemy side and the last battle might be something like Arval vs Sothis.
I definitely appreciate how Shez didn't back down or get flummoxed. It's unfortunately rare to see writers in the medium break trope. And now: "You know, an adult wouldn't get all stubborn and combative like this." "That's what Shez said XD"
Shez really seems to bring out the character's flaws lol. Lorenz's conversation is pretty similar to this, with Shez calling him out for having a heavily oversimplified view on nobles defending the commoners.
Shez fixed all the problems Byleth had. I hated being able to choose what to say, but then having no voices lines for that said dialogue. And Shez has a personality.
I love Lysithea and she's a great character in many ways but sometimes this happens and it bothers me a lot that she immediately goes to the negatives when someone says something about her age or her behavior and she even gets slightly verbally abusive about it, I'm not trying to hate on her at all when I say this, it's just something that Isee with her.
Thats the reason i hate her so much. To me she is just a shittier version of Edelgard. She feels like a dollar store copy with self insert garbage added to her. The only Three Houses char i cant stand at all.
@@Saskia.SandartPaoli In Three Houses there is some development you see in the post-time skip. The pre-time skip is learning about her and granted her background is pretty tragic so it is understandable where she comes from.
It's what keeps me from liking her tbh. Like I get it her backstory is sad and I feel bad for her for what the Agarthians did to her, but this attitude of hers and the way she snaps at anyone for the littlest thing makes me despise her.
@@bacongod5759 in classic mode, if a character dies, they die for good and won't be available in the next chapter. Lysithea definitely got killed with facts and logic in this video.
I love how it switches between regular and quiet when Shez and Lysithea are in control of the situation respectively (and swaps for each of them when they're neutral).
Yeah he does and I’m saying that as a Lysithea fan. My girl just got absolutely roasted. And I’m not even mad about it either as I’m used to her childish and Hypocritical attitude.
Bro I know! I genuinely really like Shez. They've quickly become one of my favorite characters from this series. Can't wait to see how the rest of their story plays out.
@@SpeedDemonPowerage98 not going to lie in three hopes Lysitheas very slow compared to other magic users I've used all the units in mock battles testing them out and she's probably never gonna be used by me she is the equivelnet of the original warriors Corrin
Okay I like this character a lot more than Byleth, I really hope they take the fandom's reaction as positive and start making their self insert characters more of actual characters because of this game.
tbh I never even inserted myself with the self insert character no matter how much they try to do it. Byleth was a serious missed opportunity of having a teacher with personality
@@TinaTissue28 Yeah, it is weird. Sometimes it can be overlooked, maybe in games with little story-dialogues like Mario, old Zelda games or the first JRPGs, but now it feels awkward to see a character just being there without even saying "yeah".
This was my biggest issue with Three Houses - and I'm glad that issue is rectified for Byleth and this game's protagonist. Silent protagonists CAN work but in a text-heavy game like a Fire Emblem game... not so much. In Chrono Trigger it works. In Super Mario RPG it works (Mario's hilarious pantomiming is reason enough to play it lol). I really hope the next main entry doesn't have a silent lead character - it's just so jarring in a game where everyone is so verbose lol
literally this, I know robin and corrin like actually spoke and all even on their own but something about the whole like making this person look exactly how you want (and far as I know Robin being like a clean slate) just rubs me the wrong way, like people can have their opinions about Ike as much as they want, idk what that might be, but Shez is literally the first protag since him, since 2007 aside from the remakes to just have a proper personality (unless I'm missing a game) and I love it already
I would rather say it's Shez who completely destroyed her and factually proved she's in fact immature here. She even shows that she has a very negative and disrespecting view regarding the child condition by directly assuming Shez means she's a literal baby by saying that. She could take that as a compliment if she wasn't so complexed about being compared to a child. That was quite funny though.
@@m.m.2341 I know I just didn't read the title correctly at first when I saw the video. That doesn't really change the point :p. But thanks for mentionning it nonetheless.
Lysithea here is too cute ngl. I never understood what people saw in her, but now I understand. When she says "weak little baby" my sides go into orbit.
I can't fucking breathe holy shit. The way the beat drops in the pause just as Shez calls her a child, the uno reverse card he pulls... Everything here is perfect, god bless.
Yeah. When she went and did the same thing she gets on at others for doing she deserved everything Shez gave her. She does own up to it and apologise in the B support though.
Ok, right here, is where I'm warming up to Shez. If Byleth and Shez didn't both have Gods in their heads that are rivals, then those two blokes would've been the best of pals. Their personalities compliment each other.
Seeing this video alone drove home why I found Three Houses to be distinctly dull and lifeless compared to prior entries - I was more invested in Fates, even. Now I understand exactly why; the very core of the game, the main character, is an utterly blank slate. Even in regards to the plot, Byleth feels oddly disconnected, it's more of Claude, Dimitri, and Edelgard's story than Byleth's. 'Inserting your own personality' doesn't really work when other characters with actual personalities are supposed to bounce off you, and it makes scenes and moments that are supposed to hold weight fall flat. I felt nothing when Gerald died. Yet, I had absolutely no context for this game before coming here and immediately I adore Shez as a character. It helps that he's well-written, but just having a personality in the first place feels like such a step up. Love this fella, might have to check out the game itself now.
Man I really love Shez here. I never really liked Lysithea's character, just not my type, but it definitely gives us a chance to see more from other characters like this standing their ground just as hard haha.
@@popkhorne5372 never really liked byleth, I never really liked the self inserts, Robin is alright, Byleth says so little it's like they arent even there, Shez got that commander Sheppard energy of being a player insert but also having enough personality to be likeable on their own, what having actual dialouge does to enhance the experience
man I really hope the next main line fire emblem game has a protagonists that can talk as much as the other units. I enjoy the back and forth they have here compared to byleths slience.
I really hope this is either them saying "hey look we know the silent protag wasn't exactly ideal so we're going back to ones that will literally talk along with the rest of the cast when the entire game is voiced" or at least like, trying this to garner feedback and I hope to god no one is against this for some reason cus its just so good to have a protag with a proper personality and options AND the gender choice for whoever that is a make or break for, I personally wouldnt mind dropping that and just having one or the other again tbh
after playing the demo, we were robbed with 3houses. Imagine if Byleth gotten this kind of back and forth with the students and the house leaders. Their supports would feel so much more authentic.
I like how despite claude's warning shez still calls her a child, in general I like how shez is a little bit rude and inpertect, really sells the whole being a mercenary thing since those probably don't have proper manners compared to your typical hero, it's a lot better than the common goodie two shoes hero prince, no hate to those characters but I've seen the pure hero who wants to save everyone so much that I find it more annoying so having a flawed protag like shez or trevor bellmont from netflix castlevania is a lot more interesting Also as a sidenote it's weird how most students grows a small amount post timeskip but shez remains the exact same height
@@Nerocrystal I wouldn't know. His age shows ???? All over the place. And he doesn't change his design like Byleth (Except hair color) so I'll assume he's an adult.
@@Zekken_The_Lodestar He is pretty much the same age as the lords (byleth was close to their age but just a bit older). The game tells you so when you get recruited.
@@tsukicat3143 On my save for three hopes it doesn't show his age. But I'm three houses it shows Byleth's age. Kinda weird to me. Maybe in the full game we'll find out more of Shez's past.
Funny part is there’s a high chance when this support takes place that Lysithea is still only 17, so for all intents and purposes she IS still a kid lol
Well, this is my opinion, but this is one of the thing that bothered me about Lysithea. Sure, you can say she hates being called a kid (and the sad truth about her lifespan), but that doesn't mean she can talk down to other so she can make herself right and matured... This reminds me of her support with Ignatz; pretty much making me dislike her a little. That and this thing of her "arguing" about her age makes her less matured and show more of her childish attitude (Shez was right to say that). So yeah, hope someone can tell her about how bad her tendency is....
Shez.. I love you. If Byleth was the other person in this conversation, it wouldn't even be a conversation. Thank you for making the game series ACTUALLY interesting again.
Just wanted to say how I recently realized that Lysithea is voiced by the same actress who does XJ-9 😳 little did we know we met Lysithea years ago while watching our fav kid’s shows
This demo made me love Shez and Arval before we get the full game (an idiot and their sassy ancient god), My man Shez was NOT backing down at all with Lysithea! We love to see it! 👏
Lmao! I love how the music starts blasting after Lysithea gets called a kid, I’m not sure if it was intentional but the comedic timing is great ahahahah!
