Hi, it’s Kris from the califoreigners this week we wanted to revisit Lytle Creek located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.
Our handy adventure pass has made playing in the waters around Lytle creek our go-to activity to escape the heat this summer. With its proximity to a freeway, Lytle creek is a great spot to bring the family. It’s a place where you and the kids can enjoy the creek or hike out to a waterfall within ten minutes of exiting the 210 freeway. It’s such a fun, family-friendly activity that we even brought our Funday kids bubble out to enjoy it with us and everyone’s kids had a blast.
We enjoy Lytle Creek the most because its water isn’t deep and the current’s not that strong. With younger kids, it’s one of the less stressful nature water activities you can do. You don’t have to worry about some rogue wave hitting the beach, or what’s in the murky waters of a larger river.
I don’t think any of us thought we were going to stay out there for longer than 3 hours, but the temperature in the shade was perfect, and in total, we ended up staying for over six and a half hours. The time flew by, and the kids never got bored.
We were there so long that my buddy Brandon and I even got away for an hour to hike out to Bonita creek falls. Unfortunately, our spur-of-the-moment hike started during the hottest part of the day, but thankfully the only scorching part of the hike was the 15 minutes you're exposed to the sun as you make your way through the dry river bed. At the time, We weren’t exactly sure how to get to Bonita falls, but it’s commonly known that all you need to do is follow the graffiti. And sadly, that's the truth. After rounding the bend and heading back into the trees, the temperature went back down, and we got to Bonita Falls shortly after. The falls were much taller than I expected, and the mist coming from it was a welcome surprise. Thankfully the tagging around the falls wasn’t as bad as we’ve seen in some of the photos online. However, it was still a bummer to see in person. The area around the falls was surrounded by other hikers enjoying the falls, so we headed back after a few minutes.
Both Brandon and I agreed that it’s an easy hike. You just need to watch where you put your feet in the rocks of the dry river bed, so you don’t roll your ankle. Altogether, it took us an hour and 10 minutes to get back to your group, and the kids who were having so much fun didn’t even know we were gone.
So if you’re looking for a fun activity with your family and some close friends, we thoroughly recommend spending the day at Lytle creek. All the friends we invited out loved the experience and want to go out and do it again.
