I think "a father who is father of nothing" is not the actual correct translation, I would rather translate it "a father who is nothing like a father" I interpretate it as the tale of an abusive father who brought his daughter to isolation and maybe suicide
@MrThemadcap
@MrThemadcap 3 года назад
Basically I am more inclined to your interpretation but the lyric leaves others open, in the absence of the "authentic interpretation". The phrase you speak of "... she has lost the fruit of his womb", therefore "... "a father who has nothing of a father .." ... could refer to the fact that he is a father of an unborn child ...
@babajogo1

I agree. My interpretation is that Coraline need a father (or a mother/friend/ecc) for support but her father regretted her and people (probably in a small town), with all their negative judgments, constricted Coraline to isolation like if she buried in a castle, far away from real world, for forgetting everything (probably in a hospital or maybe, sadly, suicide).

I get a similar impression to you, especially with the lyrics about being able to grow up, pack your bags and leave and being stuck in a cage by a monster. That being said, it’s clearly open for interpretation and it can really resonate on so many different levels - for those dealing with anxiety, depression or abuse and also the pain of watching someone you care for go through such terrible difficulty but knowing that no matter how much you want to rescue them there’s nothing you can do. The knight in shining armour only succeeds in fairy tales, real life doesn’t give you the happily ever after, no matter how much we wish it would. Seriously though, Damiano’s lyrics. Damn he can write! The more I hear, the more impressed I am, especially with his age. He was writing songs as a teenager with a depth of meaning people twice his age dream of achieving. Incredible talent. (And that’s before you even get to the music and the band. The instrumentals are consistently fire!)

As someone who struggles with anxiety and low self esteem, I interpretate this song in a different way: I don't see the antagonist as a concrete person, like an abuser, but as the inner voice I hear constantly, that tells me I'm not worthy. No matter hard I try to go out from the door, to explore and challenge myself, I find mines my own mind created ("Coraline wants the sea but she is afraid of the water")

Personally, I don't so much see a piece of Coraline inside of me as inside my friends. A lot of my friends have anxiety, depression, PTSD, have struggled with eating disorders or still do, self-harm, have been suicidal, etc. and I keep wishing I could be there for them and help them, but they all live far away from me, so all I can do to support them is talk to them or send them presents & sometimes money, so I strongly identify with that verse written from the perspective of somebody who wants to help and be there for her instead. I can't wait for the pandemic to be over so I can go visit them.

They released a brief interview about this song: it is a true story, but they refused to speak about the true event behind the song. They told that everyone can give a personal interpretation to it: It can be an abusive relationship, or a sort of mental issue due to anxiety or something else. The only certain thing that they have said about the song is that it have a sad ending... A little suggestion: if you are going to do a reaction of "torna a casa" from their album, keep in mind that Marlena is the name that they give to their muse, to their creativity and inspiration: knowing that change completely the meaning of the song 😉

wow, one of the best reactions here on yt. You hit the point of the story and understood almost everything. So, Damiano wrote the song. (Yes, he is such a talented artist and writer). Coraline is actually an invented name (purely stylistic and musical choice), but the person and her story are real. She is someone who definetely Damiano knows, even if he keeps her identity secret. From what we understand, the protagonist is a victim of abuse, (probably by the father, or at least the father has to do with all her situation). The lyrics of the video are not so accurate, so maybe some things are confusing. The verse "ha un padre che di padre ha niente" is more translatable like "she has a father who about being a father has nothing" (so he is not a good person). Last detail: there is no happy ending in the story. The castle with powerful walls where nothing can hit her, is actually her tomb. It's sad, but also beautiful song. Hope you'll react to other songs of Måneskin. I suggest you "la paura del buio". Don't forget the lyrics, are so important to understand all their world. Hugs from Italy 🤗
@antvilla72
@antvilla72 3 года назад
I don’t think that the castle is her tomb. Even if we know there is no happy ending, I think Damiano is again suggesting that she leaves her house , and move in a new place for her, where she can try to forget by building around her such powerful walls (I told CORALINE she can grow up, take her stuff and then leave) so that nothing can hurt her anymore. W Maneskin
@valu8734
@valu8734 3 года назад
@@antvilla72At first, I gave the same interpretation too. Then I noticed that he says: "they told her that there is a castle in the city". I understood that perhaps that "they told her" refers to the people, the same people who judged her as incapable and weak. So it seems like a metaphor, as if even the murmuring of the people had pushed her to make an extreme gesture to ease all the pain. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but the fact that Damiano wanted to point out that it doesn't have a nice ending implies that he wanted to give a little suggestion for the interpretation. However, it remains a wonderful song, with a text that should be deepened and studied like a literary work

So the way I INTERPRET this song, as the whole story and meaning have not been disclosed by the authors, is that Coraline was being abused by her father, this event caused an unwanted pregnancy which ultimately led to an abortion, the castle is, in my opinion, the ultimate silence. As we know from Måneskin that the story this song is based on ends in sad manner, I would assume Coraline ended up commiting suicide, to escape the pain. If have not listened to’em already, I would recommend “Torna a casa” and “Vent’anni”.

Damiano wanted to tell the story of young person that struggle in life...and not even a prince can save her...her abused life and all that shit..but the real cool part is that he didn’t wanted to give an happy ending or a clear picture on what she will do, cause everybody can take the song and give their own meaning! “ha un padre che di padre è niente” literally means that Coraline has a father but he has nothing to do with what a father should be..so i think the lyric could talk about an abusive relationship or an abusive household and Coraline doesn’t have the strength to leave that situation. I don't read the song as a story of an abusive relationship, but as the story of someone who suffered so much in life that she ended up being afraid of it. Her pain was so big that just a "tear" of her sufference would have been an ocean for anyone else, yet she kept comforting others, while not revealing her "truth". People mocked her for being afraid, without trying to understand her, not even her father, who was all but a father. She wanted to be strong, but she was scared, and yet she didn't know that she was already strong. I'm afraid that when she opened that door, she did it to end her life.

From the first time I listened to this song, I thought there are actually two narrators: the first is an admirer or dear friend of Coraline (first and final part), the second is her father (middle part). I haven't seen others who saw it this way so I'm not sure, it might be totally wrong. But "I told Coraline she can grow up, take her stuff and leave" really sounds like the words of a father to me. Plus, the two narrators actually say the name of Coraline in different ways (the first uses both a french and an english pronunciation, the second an italian one); of course this might also be just for musical reasons, but... And in general, the two narrators have quite different dictions (the first one doesn't sound like Damiano's usual pronunciation)

Damiano said that this song tells the story of a real person (Coraline is a fantasy name but the girl behind that is real and it's someone Damiano knew). He refused to get specific with what happened exactly to her out of respect but he did specify that this story, told like a fairytale, doesn't have a happy ending. I think with that and and the lyrics he left all the hints there to get at least an idea of what happened if someone really wants to know: a father that is nothing like a father (the monster holding her back) abusing his daughter, causing her to develope anxiety, an eating disorder (she doesn't want to eat), suicide instincts (she'd rather disappear) and all kind of traumas, he even gets her pregnant and eventually she takes her own life. But I also think it's not that important to know for sure the details, because the painful feelings this song communicates are something universal that a lot of us can relate to, even without the extreme and tragic circumstances behind them in this particular song.

I think everyone can interpret this song in many different ways based on their experiences, thoughts, emotions and so on. The group said that this song is like a fairytale and each one of us make it their own fairytale. It's like the song turns out to have a different message for everyone and it is relatable. I love the fact that you liked it so much, you were hyped as hell! XD Love from Italy!

@@federicalolli9913 To my point of view, the ""castle"" it's nothing but a way to indicate a graveyard or the death, since they (the Måneskin) describe it as a place where Coraline can be safe and protect, and if you read the lyrics of this song carefully, you'll notice that more time it appears the phrase "Coraline doesn't want to eat anymore, yeah she really wants to disappear" (or something like this), meaning that she wants to d¡e.. Actually, all the refrain(?) says how she was scared to live even if she wanted to, but because of a monster (her dad) was kinda impossible for her to have a normal life. And in the end, the father is "not a father" because of what he did to her...

Wow, you are the first person I'm watching who actually guessed lyrics right. From what I've read, it's a true story about girl who was sexually abused (not sure if it was her father) and Damiano was trying to help her, but she couldn't make it and she committed suicide in the end. As beautiful as sad song.

In the meantime, thanks for this video, I have been a fan of Maneskin for many years and it fills me with joy to see people who live off music sharing their reactions by listening to their songs. Regarding Coraline, the Maneskins have released this clarification in an interview: “Coraline needs a clarification: it is not the story of a knight who saves the princess in distress. The story ends badly, there is no happy ending. It is something real, it is the withering of this flower, of this girl, and the knight is helpless and powerless in the face of what is happening. As for Coraline, it is not referring to the anime, to the film. The choice of the name is purely musical, phonetic. The story is real, which I will not talk about, reported in a fairy tale and everyone can interpret it as they prefer ”. so you have interpreted the text very well even if in another language and in a different life reality. Coraline is a child, a teenager who lives on fears, the song tells exactly this phase of her life in which she should find the courage to face life and become a woman, but Coraline cannot get out of the darkness of her fear, she has no never trusted anyone, not even her father, so this boy arrives, who wants to help her, who wants to save her, but he himself is defeated by the girl's fear, she will end up abandoning herself to fear, the castle with the mighty walls is nothing other than herself, she closed herself within herself without leaving it, now this is not the end of Coraline's story, but it is the end of the story that the Maneskin told us, a story so common and current told like a fairy tale, but which largely describes almost all adolescents who are about to face life, without however telling us a happy ending.

I loved your reaction!! For not being Italian you’ve got a lot from the song. Even if there’s a pretty good translations some metaphors and expressions can be understood only by analyzing the lyrics in Italian. The good point of the song is that you can decide the meaning, Damiano’s so good that even in Italian you will be the one deciding if it was the father abusing her, if he had no fatherly figure in her life etc. I think that each of us can portrait a little of their personal issues and life and simply have their personal take away from this story. Anyway I loved your reactions💚☮️

I had a good friend back in highschool whose uncle had been sexually abusing her from age 4 to 18 (basically until she managed to leave home), basically ever since she could remember. That uncle was the richest most respected member of the family everyone went for financial support to, so he was close to untouchable. When she was in her early teens she tried to seek help with her mom, who accused her of making it all up and how dare she badmouth the respectable man. She was as trapped as someone possibly could be. Where can a minor go whose guardians don't believe her? When I got to know her I quickly learned why she never wore short sleeves, both her arms covered from wrist to elbow in marks of the pain that would be the only means to pull her back into the now when that black dead hole inside of her became too much to bear and threatened to swallow her up. She had a bad bad eating disorder. Not eating or removing from herself whatever she was pressured into eating was her one way to have a semblance of power and independence over her body. She had already once attempt to end it all which finally ended her in a closed institution and later in a shared living for older teenagers under supervision. At least it was away from home for some time. After highschool as happens so often in life we fell out of touch, but I thought of her often. When after almost 15 years I returned to visit my hometown - I had moved abroad - I happened to catch a glance of her from a bus. I didn't get a chance to talk to her and I don't know her current contact details. But she looked well and glowing and I was so happy to know that for now she has made it. This song reminds me so much of her story. To everyone who is going through something similar, I hope from the bottom of my heart you'll be able to push through.

Ciao, I m italian. This song was inspired by Damiano's girlfriend. Giorgia suffers from some diseases that affect the female sexual organs which are vulvodynia and endometriosis. Rare diseases that are often not recognized immediately Giorgia Soleri had the merit of raising awareness of these diseases, is an example for many women Damiano wanted to dedicate this song to all women who suffer from rare diseases that are often not recognized and all women who suffer from them are treated like crazy.

As was already said, maybe the Coraline's father abused of her and was also the father of the lost fruit of womb. Coraline dreamt to leave from the miserable door to be free (as the sea) and actually did but just to get into a mental hospital protected from any abuse. Also the storyteller was defeated as he would for her anything but he lost her for ever

This is my favorite maneskin song, personally. It can have many different interpretations, but it's very much a sad story told as a fairy tale, as Damiano mentioned in an interview. One of the most accepted theories about this song is that Coraline had an abusive father. He abused her in many ways, some assume even sexually due to the line about her losing the fruit of her womb. The singer is someone who knows her, and wants to help very desperately. But Coraline is unfortunately not fully within his reach. He tries to help but she ultimately ends up taking her own life. The castle, as you mentioned, would symbolize a cemetery. The singer was nothing more than a witness to the tragedy of Coraline, which makes it all the more sad. Because he wished he could help, he tried, but it wasn't enough. :( It's a very sad song but I love it very much.

In an interview we read that there were various stories but on which Damiano did not give details. At the beginning of the song we thought of Victoria because at 14 she missed a year of school because she could not leave the house due to panic attacks, then another story because it referred to a girl who did not want to eat and wanted to disappear, finally to another story that is still different because it refers to an abortion and an inadequate father, but this part has nothing to do with Victoria having her and all the members of the group a very close and affectionate relationship with him ( Victoria's mother died when she was 17), so there are various different stories that belong to different people and speak of unease, depression, abuse and Coraline represents them all.

In my opinion “a father who is father of nothing” is not a properly corrected translation: in Italian it’s “ha un padre che di padre ha niente” which can possibly mean (in a figurative way) that her father did something that doesn’t make him worth it to be a father. I interpret this lines like Coraline had a father who probably abused her, treated her so badly that he can’t be considered a father at all.

I love your breakdown. I think that something is missing in translation. I think that they're talking about the depression and anxiety that even with a "knight" on her side, at the end she decided to hide in the castle of her depression. The verses "she lost the fruit of her womb" and "she has not known love" made me think that the poor girl has been raped and lost her child.

You caught it right from the very beginning bro, an abusive relationship where the father is unfortunately the monster,I don’t think that the castle is her tomb. Even if we know there is no happy ending, I think Damiano is again suggesting that she leaves her house , and move in a new place for her, where she can try to forget by building around her such powerful walls (I told CORALINE she can grow up, take her stuff and then leave) so that nothing can hurt her anymore. Hi, italian here, that's the interpretation i give to the last lyrics: She lost the fruit of her womb, she never knew love, a father who is nothing like a father = her father sexually abused her till the point of making her pregnant, then he forced her to abort or she had a spontaneous abortion. In town there is castle with strong walls, nothing will harm her there = there is a shelter for abused women in town, she will be safe there
