For everyone bitching about the price, Ibanez carries an entire line of very affordable and amazingly crafted 8-string guitars. I bought one and i spent around $800, its plays and feels great. And no kid starting out needs a $6000 guitar, but someday when he decides he wants something more then he WILL save the money and buy something like that. So why all the hate. People are so quick to flame and be pist about shit that doesnt matter.

+Joe Wheeler People can spend their hard earned money how they please, but the guitar industry is known for scamming the shit out of young kids who don't know better. Anyone...and I mean ANYONE who has the means to by a 6,000 dollar guitar, is smart enough to know this piece of shit isn't worth 6,000 dollars. A kid just starting out has no business spending that much money, and a seasoned pro who tours knows better than to spend so much on such a limited guitar. In the 90s Ibanez made millions using Korn to sell 1000-2000 dollar 7-strings to teens that were obviously sending in money they made with summer and after-school jobs. Now that the fad is over, these guitars are thrown all over ebay for 200-300 bucks and even Ibanez themselves are selling them brand new for less than 400 dollars. A trend I've noticed with signature guitars, especially from Ibanez, is that they're a way to sell kids stripped down cheap versions of a guitar under the assumption the limited features are limited because some rockstar designed it to be a "no-nonsense" version. Very few actual musicians are going to fall for that shit. Look at the Tonin Abasi Signature Series 1,200-4,000 for what essentially amounts to 800 dollar RG8s with shiny knobs. It's the same formula with signature amps - strip away a bunch of features, simplify the shit out of the design then use a rockstars name to justify doubling the price.

"Rational Gaze is 4 bars of 25/16 followed by 1 of 28/16, while at the same time being 4/4." You can think about any song in terms of strange polymeters if you so desire. Or you can think of them as simply being syncopated, which is most likely how they think about it.

Now that Meshuggah have gone 8 string, there is only one place left to go: Micro-tonal. I want to hear Meshuggah using Microtones, they are the perfect band for it, and they would be a great way for other guitarists to discover this new evolution in guitars.

More from Tomas Haake in an interview: "You have of course a cycle that’s repeating. For example, a pattern of snare and kick could be nine hits over an 8/8 bar, and that nine-beat cycle keeps repeating while my cymbal/hi-hat hand and the snare play a straight beat as well. So the context of the song is 4/4, but if you wanted to you could say this measure is 13/16 or something, but we really don’t think about it like that. We just think bar by bar, and think of each bar as a different movement."

If I'm not mistaken, but they originally recorded the " Nothing" album on 7 string tuned down. But they also used bass guitars for some of the tracks because they were messing with a few different down tunings and the 7 string guitars were going out of tune too much. So when he mentioned about all of them playing bass , he wasn't joking. Love meshuggah. They are the best and heaviest band on the planet 💯🤘🖤

It's expensive because of the production techniques and material used. This guitar is so different from what Ibanez normally do, they had to custom engineer a production line to make it. Engineering jigs for the body and neck and dedicating a special production line just for one guitar, which is sold in limited quantities demands a high price tag to make the product economical for the manufacturer. Its not down to the nature of the guitar, its down to economics of its production.

I think it because it is designed specifically for him and Meshuggah doesn't really use the warm happy neck tone in their music. They use an aggressive, heavily muted, "djenty", bridge pick up sound.
@James-vc1kc
@James-vc1kc 11 лет назад
They play in tons of different times, just because they typically play slower songs doesn't mean it's in 4/4 ^ZombieLincoln666, they actually use all of the strings for that particular tone in their music. How else would you get a note so low like that and not be played on a 7 or 8 string guitar? Meshuggah is incredible. The drummer actually plays in 2/1, 4/4, 2/2, 6/4, 3/2, and 4/2 on the snare and cymbals. I think everyone should know what they're saying before they leave a youtube comment..

I don't think that's most likely how they think of it. As someone who writes similar music, I find that the most effective way for me to write is to think of a pattern or riff of any length, be it 3/16 ,5/16, or 29/16, then repeat it until 4/4 fits over it. That seems pretty similar to Meshuggah's approach, and I suspect they use the same process.

@sanjinator17 Yeah. I didn't think he meant the weight. There's no lacking of balance just because there's 1pup. Is a guitar with 2 pups less "balanced" than a guitar with 3? Do we actually need 4 to be "balanced? 16? 2nd pup is an amenity, player either needs it or doesn't.

Get a carvin DC800, all black with satin finish. It'll cost probably 900-1000 unless you upgrade more features (different woods, fret sizes, strap locks, 5 piece necks etc). Great quality, I have one of their guitars and I plan on getting the DC800 next. You can build one on their site for free and see how much it'd cost etc. There's plenty of colors and wood tops etc. yea

Where can you get a guitar built like this or better for 400 dollars?
@ZombieLincoln666
@ZombieLincoln666 11 лет назад
Well sure they aren't always in 4/4 (just most of the time), but they aren't writing songs in 29/16 like people claim. Pravus for example is in 'free time' because there aren't really discernible measures. You could make up any number of odd time signatures to fit it, and of course people choose to use the most complex sounding ones because it makes the music they love seem more complex.

Ok, let me get this straight. You are all saying in this comment feed that basically Meshuggah is overrated and underskilled? Basically? So...let me say just this. When these guys started playing like this (back in the late 80's) maybe just maybe they are the godfathers of Progressive Metal/Tech Metal. When you look at their music, you will notice they do play in Poly METER, not many Poly RHYTHMS. Understand now that these guys are just the fucking BALLS, also have defined their own sound. 'Shug

As far as I know, you use the tape, not to not let the guitar ring out, but to dampen any unwanted noise of strings you're not playing at the given time. But maybe you mean something entirely different. I guess you mean a piece of foam or cloth or a hairband around the strings on the headstock or around the strings at the first fret. Something like that?
@maggotcorpse4918
@maggotcorpse4918 10 лет назад
Thats interesting. maybe the blackouts are the reason why they sound so muddy out of the box. Nothing against shecter i love their 6 and 7 strings. I just prefer the feel of ibanez necks and the prestige line has fine craftmenship for the price.
@DrAL00isin
@DrAL00isin 11 лет назад
I'm surprised they even bothered with the high strings, I remember seeing the other guitarist playing with the top 3 strings taped so they wouldn't ring out. I think in some ways there are those that take things too far and call it original but these guys just made a niche for themselves. I have heard of a baritone guitar before, but they are rare, and I must say I have always liked the deeper guitar tones and this makes sense to me. Now the guys putting up to 12 strings on one? not sure.
@14fluffies
@14fluffies 12 лет назад
The only thing other than the price I think I'd have a problem with would be the lower horn cut-out: it doesn't really allow access to the higher frets; then again I don't think this guitar was made for soloing and leads. In that sense my complaint is irrelevant.

I think Ibanez is really pushing the evolution of guitars.Them cooperating with groundbreaking bands with unigue sound like Meshuggah or Animals As Leaders is giving them an edge in the business. ESP does 8 string guitars but dont have bands to bring em up.
@LIPCoelho20
@LIPCoelho20 11 лет назад
actually the drummer plays 4/4 in the ride and cymbal and 23/16 in the snare and bass pedal. he's the one responsible for a weird odd tempo sound. the guitars follow generally the 23/16 beat, but at it takes to start having something weird is to, instead of playing everything 4 times, 4/4, you start mixing stuff up and using the counter-beat instead of the beat tempo. IMHO that's meshuggah's really strength: making "simple" music that sounds way more complex than it is in fact.

That was so full of wrong, you have no idea. Morten just explained to you why they use 8 strings. The mass of the guitar and the nature of the construction contributes to the clarity of the low strings and tunings as was their need when they thought of a guitar like this. And it cant be an odd meter if its a 4/4. Morten himself said it in the old tutorial videos on YT here "people say we play sparse; sparse is good, have you ever heard of ACDC?"

I'm sure the band themselves would say the same, but you gotta hand it to Ibanez for capitalizing on the fact that Meshuggah's tone is highly sought after, even though you can put a DiMarzio into an Agile 8 and get the same exact sound, there will never be a shortage of rich people who don't bother to put their time into researching and just blindly buy whatever they think will make them sound good. I put MIM pickups in a guitar made from parts that I sourced from Craigslist/Ebay and everything came down to about 120. The result? It is by far the best sounding, most comfortable Telecaster I've ever played, even when compared to my American made Fender Thinline Tele that costed me over 1.7 grand. My point is, guitar manufacturers would crumble financially and resort to whoring out their Chinese child slaves if the common consumer knew of this widely available knowledge. So in essence, people paying more money than they should for guitars keeps Chinese children out of prostitution. I need another beer.

If he's that bothered about the tonal differences and opportunities he can get from the different woods they've used, the scale length, and the fact that it's a neck-thru then why on earth did they go for the fixed edge bridge? it offers less connection between the strings and the body… they should have gone with the fixed gibraltar string-thru bridge on the iron label 8 string models
