Joel was pretty cool, I could hang out with him. He is spot on about the contractors, there seems to be a consistency issue in general, and some are dishonest. The cheating on the wife is something I've never heard about before.... 🤔

My understanding is that the homes along Paseo de Montejo were built as city homes for the sisal (henequen) barons around the turn of the 20th century. They were built well after independence but might be referred to as colonial in the sense that they were built by wealthy white landowners who became rich by exploiting the labour of the indigenous population. Another colonial aspect to the mansions is the architectural style. As was the case in Mexico City, the elite during the Porfiriato (the rule of Porfirio Diaz) were obsessed with Europe, especially France, and modelled their homes in the elaborate French style. The gravy train came to a halt after WW1 when nylon was invented and used for rope. If the state capital building is open - it houses very moving murals depicting the history of the area, the sisal trade and the abuse of local labour (if I remember correctly, one large painting is called "instruments of domination"). On a happier note: they close Paseo de Montejo (and numerous other streets) to traffic on Sunday morning. It was a lot of fun - like a carnival - when we were there in March 2019.
