From a total of 3 sonatas for double bass and piano composed by Adolf Míšek, this one has become meanwhile the most popular. While my personal favorite of the three sonatas is Míšek's lyrical and musically very inventive first sonata, the second sonata has an enormous energy and power that can sweep the audience away. In a musical sense, the slow second movement is the musical highlight of this composition. The beauty of the themes in the second movement, the rousing unison before the interesting middle section - which begins in the tempo of a slow waltz and builds up to the climax of the movement - and the perfect architecture characterize this movement. Stylistically, the first movement is reminiscent of Brahms in many places - at the time when Míšek moved to Vienna, Brahms, who also lived in Vienna, was a true living legend in full creative power and exerted an enormous musical influence on musical life as a whole. The intensity of the dynamics in the first movement of this sonata, which at times seeks almost symphonic volumes, is reminiscent of Brahms' Sonata in D minor op. 108 for violin and piano, where Brahms made a similar experiment.
