The phrase "kickstart my heart" supposedly refers to Sixx's overdose incident where a paramedic injected his heart with adrenaline.
@Metalworld9
@Metalworld9 5 месяцев назад
That is what the phrase came from. Nikki loves cars so he changed the words and the meaning to cars, which you see in the video, and motorcycles. 103 is a speed. The phrase Kick Start My Heart is from the three times Nikki died. He came back from all three. The longest was 9 minutes.
@gerardcote8391
@gerardcote8391 5 месяцев назад
This story is disputed, someone who was there said it didn't happen that way and he recovered before the paramedics showed up. True or fiction it's still a cool story to go with the song.

It's called a Talk Box, it uses a plastic tube you put in your mouth and allows you to manipulate the sound of the guitar with your mouth. You should also do their song Home Sweet Home. This song was the most requested song on MTV,, so much so that they created a rule limiting how many times they will play the same song.

Actually the thing is like a speaker on the end of a tube that you hold in your mouth and manipulate/modulate the sound my changing the shape of your mouth which is picked up by the mic and brought back into the mix.

@@deaconj3406 Very good explanation. A lot of people don't realize it's actually the sound of the guitar they're hearing.
@ClaytonMacleod
@ClaytonMacleod 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, it is just the guitar sound. You don’t actually make any noise yourself. You simply shape the sound with your mouth. When you switch to it you mute the regular guitar amp sound so that only the sound from the microphone is playing by switching from your usual speakers to the speaker that is inside a box, and the tube that goes in your mouth is connected to that box so that all the guitar sound comes only through that tube. You move your mouth as if you are talking or singing, but as I say, you make no sound yourself. The combination of what you play and how you play on the guitar, combined with what you do with your mouth, can make it sound like the guitar is talking. And that’s where the name talk box comes from. Someone already mentioned Peter Frampton. Another well known song that uses one is Bon Jovi’s Living On A Prayer. Also Aerosmith’s song Sweet Emotion. Among many others.

Mötley Crüe represented the expression "Sex, drugs and rock'n roll" (and alcohol) at its best (or worst, depending on your point of view 😃) in the 80s. Probably my favorite Crüe song is "Wild Side". I would like to be a few years younger, but I'm happy to have lived the 80s intensely (without certain excesses, obviously; no drugs and alcohol). I preferred to play sports (basket, football, tennis, beach volley). 😎 But it's nice that many young people today are interested in that period and would like to know more, from music to fashion etc. etc.

The "metallic" effect on the microphone has nothing to do with Autotune: it's called "Talk box" and is a pedal effect which inside houses a speaker to which a plastic tube is connected, the end of which is positioned near the instrumentalist's mouth, connected to a microphone. When the effect is activated, the sound is directed through the tube to the musician's mouth who, by modifying the shape and position of the tongue, changes the sound while also modulating its harmonic content. Many artists used it: try listening the intro of "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi (Richie Sambora used it several times), but long before them Peter Frampton used it in the song "Do You Feel Like We Do", to move on to Pete Townshend of the Who up to Joe Perry of Aerosmith in the song "Sweet Emotion", and the list could go on and on...

Motley Crue were one of the biggest hard rock bands to emerge from the L.A. scene in the 80's... they were also one of the most scandalous 😲 'Kickstart my heart' was a song Nikki Sixx (bass) of Motley Crue wrote about surviving a he+++n OD when the band was on tour w/ Guns N' Roses in 1987 (Paramedics revived Sixx by injecting his heart w/ adrenaline and restarting it) ... Their 1989 album 'Dr. Feelgood' charted at #1 in the US and marked a career peak... Netflix made a comedy movie 'The Dirt' based on Motley's biography. Nikki Sixx (bass) came from a broken home and arrived in Los Angeles w/ a dream of becoming a rock star (even though he could barely play bass, Sixx could write lyrics and melodies for original songs) in the 70's... After some disappointments, Sixx met Tommy Lee (drums) who was still a teen in a local band and picked him for a new band in 1980... Mick Mars (guitar) joined soon after - he was considerably older and had been a local musician for a decade... Tommy Lee recommended his high school friend Vince Neil (vocals) who was not a great singer, but had the look and image that drove women wild at shows... Mars named the band 'Motley Crew' and they chaged the spelling to Motley Crue. In 1981, Motley Crue debuted in the L.A. scene as a glam rock band w/ the members wearing makeup, high-heel shoes and big hair... they also recorded a debut album 'Too fast for love' and released it independently... By 1982, they were already selling out clubs in L.A. and raising hell w/ parties on the Sunset Strip... They were signed in 1983 to a major label and released 'Shout at the Devil'... which became a multi-platinum hit as Motley opened for Ozzy Osbourne in 1984. However, tragedy hit when singer Vince Neil was involved in a car accident that killed his passenger and friend, Nicholas 'Razzle' Dingley, who was the drummer of glam rockers Hanoi Rocks... Neil did jail time and was let out in 1985. Motley released 'Theater of Pain' in 1985 and it was another multi-platinum hit... However, the glam image became imitated by every rock band coming out of L.A. in 1986/ '87 ... so, Motley Crue changed their image into a tougher look in 1987 for the album 'Girls, girls, girls'... By this point, Nikki Sixx was abusing he+++n and after an OD, he and the band were put on notice to clean up... 'Dr. Feelgood' was a massive hit album in 1989 and Motley Crue were on top of the world... They celebrated their 10th anniversary w/ a best of compilation 'Decade of Decadence' in 1991... However, a rift between the band and Vince Neil led to the singer being fired in 1992... Motley Crue released a self-titled album in 1994 w/ John Corabi (vocals)... even though it was a heavy records, it sold poorly... In 1997, Motley reunited w/ singer Vince Neil for the album 'Generation swine'... but it was experimental musically and again sold poorly. Tommy Lee was arrested and served jail time for assaulting his then-wife actress Pamela Anderson... Tommy Lee left Motley in 1999 and the band soon split up after their 2000 album 'New Tattoo' w/ (late) drummer Randy Castillo. Motley Crue's original line-up reunited in 2005 for a massive tour and soon found themselves back in big business w/ the 2008 album 'Saints of Los Angeles'... a final tour in 2014 was supposed to end their career, but they returned to tour again in 2022. In 2023, guitarist Mick Mars retired from the band and was replaced by John 5 (guitar) as Motley Crue were still actively touring.

The guitar/voice effect comes from a device called a Golden Throat. You plug the guitar and the amp into the device and it puts the guitar output through a plastic tube that is taped to a microphone so the artist can make that strange sounding effect. By putting the tube in his mouth he can actually mouth words and play them in sync with his guitar. Mick Mars does this as the last line of the song "Kickstart My Heart"

The strange "voice" you hear is guitarist Mick Mars using a talk box. The sound from his guitar is piped up through a hollow tube into his mouth, and he modulates the sound by changing the shape of his mouth (like we do as we speak) this modulated sound is then picked up by his microphone.

I was there from the beginning with Motley Crue. Their music has pulled me through a lot of bad times. The first part is not drugs it's about cars. Then it talks about adventure and women. The 'voice' is talk box - been around for decades, I know at least since 70s (Peter Frampton). They were not talking about drugs but instead being adrenaline junkies instead of drug addicts. Thus all the intermingled imagery of race cars, race boats, drag racing, motorcycles that they drove 103 mph and ran away from cops chasing them. Also, pretty sure the last line is Rock the House (a phrase common in the 80s).

We can tell you about the heroin overdose and two cardiac needles to the heart as the inspiration for the song but honestly I don't think we can truly convey the spirit of the song. I think to truly understand who and what Motley Crue is you had to experience the 80's as we did. Motley Crue was the definition of sex, drugs and rock n roll. As a hardcore Crue fan in the 80's we knew the stories and that they were wild but really, we still didn't know. It wasn't until I read their book The Dirt and then bassist Nikki Sixx's The Heroin Diaries that the true depth of their lifestyle became clear. To say it's a miracle these guys are still alive is an understatement! This song came out when I was in high school and just got my license. As a dumb ass 16 year old who drove a 1971 Firebird this was a dangerous song to have on in the car because when it started my foot just pushed that pedal to the floor and did not let up!

Regardless of the comments below, the reference, Kickstart my Heart, is not a reference to Tommy Lee's overdose, that happened much later in the bands life. This "Kickstart my Heart' refers to starting an NHRA Drag Car (Top Fuel Drafster - not a drug reference), where you actually have to attach a starter spinner to the Supercharger to get the engine to fire (Vince Neal was a big drag racing and an adrelleine fan). Notice in the video the constant references to National Hot Road Association of America (NHRA) Drag Racing, series?? You might want to look it up, it is freaking AWECOME>
