Love your channel and how well you know your brushes! I love my AP STF. It’s been my daily driver and I have other nice brushes. Thanks for your humor and well done material!
Awesome! What size of knot did you go with? At some point down the road I may go with a larger one. And, thank you! I enjoy making the content! Have a good one!😊
@@Tobins_throwbacks I went with the 26mm I believe. I like a bigger brush. I got the abalone pattern handle and love the look. The knot is seriously good.
Thanks Lawrie! I agree, it is on the higher side. That's one of the reasons why I put it off for so long and I was refreshingly surprised when it lived up to the hype. Have a great weekend!
Glad it was helpful! I didn't expect to be able to teach an old codger like you something new 🤪😉 I hope you're doing well brother, give me a call sometime Sunday or Monday if you want to BS us for a few.
After your initial impressions, I finally ordered the Muhle rocket brush with the 25mm STF from AP. You are correct, what an outstanding knot. I met Adam last year and have been meaning to pick up one of his brushes myself. Great video.
That's awesome Steve I couldn't believe it when I first got it and realized that it was actually going to live up to the hype. And thank you sir! Have a great weekend!
Great review Tobin. I don’t have too many brushes. But I got a few synthetics. So far my favorites is the PAA amber aerolite, Simpson trafalgar t2 and for travel a st.james of london. Being from Jersey, I hate paying taxes. I feel too much goes towards programs that many folks takes advantage when in reality they don’t need it. Thanks Pete.
Great review Toby, after watching your First Impressions and the subsequent conversation we had a few days later I bought one with the white handle. It's my new favorite brush. Great review bud, I hate paying my taxes but only because of how poorly Uncle Sam spends it. Congrats to Sam!
STF sounds like a great knot. I got the G8 and it was stiffer on the first use and lost a little of that on the second use but still has plenty. Definitely going to put the STF on my list to get as I love the HMW. Have a great weekend
The microphone/ shave brush torturing sounds like a lot of fun! It's a good way to build character! LMAO! I might have to check one of these knots out as it does sound like a nice one. I kind of figured out the sritch thing years ago by chance. It's the trimmed hairs and they have a sharp edge that is created from cutting. I'm not familiar with the gel process but I would guess they are using an acid or some other chemical to treat the tips, kind of dissolving the sharp edges. I did a hand tied knot a couple of years ago and I used 600 wet/dry sandpaper and with the brush wet swirled and went back and forth over the paper. I got rid of the stritch, but the bristles are still stiff. That's just my guess anyway. Good work and it will be fun to see what's next. Take care!
😅 You should def try the microphone with an audience 😅 The knot truly lives up to the hype! You are spot on with scritch and gel. There are a couple of vids out there of guys doing it. Its essentially bleach. And the chemical reaction does exactly as you described, it basically melts it. The biggest thing that ticks me off is people bleach the hell out of a Black Badger and then try to pass it off as Manchurian. Like my 3 Heritage brushes for example. Neil destroyed those Black Badgers and thought I was dumb enough not to know what he had done, (my opinion) When done right, I don't mind gel knots. I don't prefer them, if I am buying a natural fiber brush I want exactly that...natural 😉 Rob Moffett does them right. Most others IMO do not, there are of course some exceptions. I'm over this "gel fad" to say the least. Im also not into fake meat or fake breasts...I like things as God intended 😅😅😅 Have a good one my friend!
Something I've noted with both synthetic and natural brushes is that the ease of splay increases noticeably when there's soap between the fibres. If you want to notice what I mean, once you're done with a shave, splay the brush against the palm of your hand and do circular movements as you're rinsing the brush under running water. As the soap gets rinsed out, splayability definitely does decrease enough to notice.
Hi Tobin nice review! Oh, now you've given me a taste for it, it combines both positive qualities in one! Can you throw it to me please, and be careful not to throw it too far 😜 you have strong arms! Happy Easter weekend 🐰🐰🐰🐣🐰🐰🐣🐰🐣
Thanks Pete. I’ll be honest. I don’t like paying taxes and I currently pay the most I have ever paid in my life and I am retired. The more taxes I pay, the less money I have for shaving supplies like the Muhle STF brush. 😂
I dislike the concept of income taxes specifically (a free market economy can only truly function freely within the confines of a government that has no knowledge of the individual salaries of employees within the context of a relationship with their employers). Universal (corporate and consumer) sales taxes make far more sense in a consumer based market place. Tax the sale of goods up front and not the base of wealth of individuals… no penalty for electing to not spend money and save / invest… everyone thus pays the same stimulating the economy… allowing people to make choices as opposed to limiting their choices. If we did this our government leaders would be forced to use/spend the tax revenue as if it were their own money coming out of their own wallets, as opposed to the far less limited supply supplied by the top 10% of earners nationally. Love your content Tobin! & Thanks Pete!
I bowl lather and then do a light face lather for my first pass only. I am going to buy my next brush from AP Shaveco. Would you recommend the Muhle STF 25 mm for bowl lathering or would you go for the 25 mm G5C knot?
I'd definitely recommend the Muhle STF. I like the G5C, but the Muhle is a superior product IMO. No matter which one you go with I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it. Have a good one brother!
Taxes are TERRIBLE You get taxes taken out of your check each week then the money left over is your to spend on things and YEP you guessed it you get taxed again and then the end of the year comes around and guess what TAX return time and you get like 2% back from what they took from you all year long. I HATE TAXES!!! Thank pete! Keep up the great work with all these awesome scents coming out!
This is awesome! Can you give you're ratings compared against the G5C. ie. How would you rate the G5C Softness, Backbone, Ease of Splay, Retention etc?
Sorry Matt, I missed this comment. I need to do my G5C video. I would say Softness is very similar. The Stf has slightly less Backbone and is a more natural splay. The Stf overall feels more "natural". I love the g5c. Sorry about the late reply. Have a good one!
I can't seem to find any definitive info on this, but I think I have a brush with the Mühle STF knot. It's a small brush from that Portuguese soap/cream company Musgo Real (Claus Porto?). It looks like a Mühle brush that is rebranded. If it's the same knot, then it's really a great knot. My question is about the sizing. These come in different sizes than most handles. Would you use a 25mm in a 26mm handle? I wonder how that affects backbone, since something as simple as loft can change the amount of backbone and splay drastically. Would that extra mm make you want to set it a tad lower?
Sorry for the late reply Lee I meant to respond to this much sooner. It likely is the same knot, I know over the years Mühle has allowed a few people access to it. Here in the states my understanding is Andrew at AP Shave Co has access to it, then sells them to the Artisan brush makers. So yours very likely is a STF. And that's a good question, I know it caused a few issues for Adam at Nameless. There were a couple of handles that we couldn't put one in. I'd definitely say a 25 in a 26 tho.
Bonjour I recently found your channel. Have you done a ‘State of the Collection’ on your brushes? Also, have you replaced an old brush knot with new? Finally, I don’t necessarily “like” paying taxes, but stuff has to be paid for somehow. Thanks, Pete!
Hey Anders! By "State of Collection " do you mean sharing my collection as a whole? I've never removed an old knot, but I have set a few knots into handles. And thanks, brother!
Great video Tobin! Here is a question though.. if you could only reach for one synthetic knot for the rest of your life between the G5C/G5A, any of the PAA synthetics, or the Muhle STF, which would you choose?
Thank you! Great question! One would be hard, but definitely a toss up between the new fibers in The Astraeus from PAA or the STF. With the price factored in I would say the Astraeus from Phoenix, but if money wasn't an option I would say the stf. The Astraeus is less than $20
@@Tobins_throwbacks Thanks for the reply, I like that answer. Wow, is the Astraeus really that good?? I kind of wrote it off due to only being a 22mm knot, but I am looking for a good synthetic primarily for bowl lathering, but some face lathering and have been struggling between a PAA or getting a different handle and going G5C/Muhle STF
Horse by itself in the brushes that I have experienced have in general offered little scrub and virtually no scritch. I think a Horse and Badger mix or even mixed with boar could be amazing! Do you own any horse brushes?
@@Tobins_throwbacks Interesting and no not yet i’m just getting into wet shaving and trying to decide on my first brush. And I’m thinking about getting ether horse or boar. I’m learning to shave with a straight and I’m tired of using can shaving cream with no brush you know.
