A wonderful piece, and beautifully orchestrated. For me the performance seems a bit slow and missing the sweep that I hear in other performances, just my opinion. thank you!
Wonderful textural variety and colorful orchestration. Before this I'd only heard 'Islamey'. I recently learned his choral setting of 'The Angel Cried...' ; I hope his symphonies and concertos have similar questions qualities to this and his choral writing.
Thank you for the message. Balakirev's works are very interesting. The 1st symphony, the 2nd piano concerto and King Lear music are authentic masterworks. Karajan, Beecham and Svetlanov have recorded the 1st symphony in wonderful renditions. Unfortunately after Svetlanov's death also in Russia Balakirev's music is seldom performed. And this is a great pity.
