Disagree. The original lacks grip texturing, the trigger sucks and it’s outdated in capacity compared to today’s offerings. However, it’s reliable and that’s huge.

What if you have a original shield with an apex trigger a stipple grip night sights and mag guts that give you 3 to 4 extra rounds per mag. Should I upgrade to a plus?

Had the OG shield since 2012 been carrying it ever since. 3000 rounds in over the years 5 jams 1 stove pipe. Only Upgrades or add one Trijicon Day and night sights and an Apex N trigger with 3.4 pound trigger pull and what they call a true reset and a Shrog Grip. Backup carry the DB9 Diamondback. They both serve their purpose. Hope to get another 12 years out of the shield. Amazing gun and a true workhorse that keeps on working and kicking. Super awesome video.

I picked one up yesterday. I immediately went and put some rounds through it. I have always liked the shield and the M&P 2.0 line of pistols. This gun checks off so many boxes...I like it alot.

@@shenmue5507 I don't know. I don't have any experience with the apex trigger. I do experience with Canik triggers. It is not as nice as those, but still an improvement over the 2.0 trigger...which was already decent to me.

I was wondering about the comparison with the apex trigger too. I suspect they are similar. I personally just prefer the apex style trigger over the hinge trigger on older shield’s.

@@brianblack546 I guess we won't know until we buy one. If I had to put my money on it I bet it's a little worse than the apex. It's probably a little heavier and a little gritty but I could be wrong. When it comes to oem triggers each one is a little different. I might get one that's a little gritty and you might get one that's completely smooth. It varies from gun to gun. Im still going to buy one though.

Didnt hear you mention that the plus grip is just a hair over 10% wider. Cant hardly see it but it is part of what makes it better. Adding talon grip to the original will help get that feel and help on the texture. Biggest pet peeve on the original is the texturing under the finger guard wears on my middle finger fast. It might depend on hands but Im thinking about sanding that part down. TY for the review.

Buying the 2.0 would have been stupid because the apex trigger kit is better than the trigger in the 2.0... There was never a good reason to upgrade until now. It's just kind of disappointing that the regular shield plus doesn't come with an optic cut. Im personally going to wait until winter because im not going to pay extra for this thing. It doesn't have night sights like the competition so anything over $450 would be ridiculous.

@@shenmue5507 I’m still happy with my original shield with apex sights and night sights. It’s a great pistol to fight too a rifle. I’ve considered a red dot on my pistols but I’m concerned about fogging going from cars and homes to outdoors when truly needed. Can i shoot better with a red dot? Yes. Will it be fogged when I need it? Probably. Night sights fighting to a AR if stuff goes real bad.

Great Video, thanks! Think I'm gonna have to get one. I love my Shield 40 Performance Center except for the porting. Yeah, it looks cool in low light and it does help with muzzle climb... but not enough to outweigh the damage to my night vision. I live & work in an Uber liberal college town, so concealability is primary. And the Shield is great for that. But getting extra rounds PLUS a PC-like trigger in the same size package?... Winning!

Smith and wesson m&p 2.0 compact in 40 cal has a 13 round mag. No reason they can't do that in the shield in 9mm in my opinion. I'm not much of a fan of the shield. I see the appeal though. Definitely would choose it over any taurus even with the low capacity. Never had a taurus without problems. Even my old hipoint I got second hand runs better than any taurus I have handled including revolvers. Heard some good things about the G2 and G3. Hopefully they have gotten better. I always want the best for any manufacturer that makes an affordable firearm as long as they are reliable.

I have the original shield, and just recently purchased the Shield Plus. All your points are valid, but there is one thing (which is actually a couple things really)... the gun is so new that you can’t even purchase extra magazines from Smith & Wesson. In fact, when I spoke to their customer service, that’s exactly what they pointed out, that it was just released. The other thing is that the magazine plates with the pinky extensions do not fit on the new 10 round magazine. You get two magazines with the Shield Plus, a 10 and a 13 rounder, but you cannot get more yet. Typically, I don’t carry extra magazines, but I do like having 6 to 8 for purposes of going to the range (or the Apocalypse, should that occur).

just picked up my shield plus this morning. This is the pistol I have been waiting for. I liked the p365 and the hellcat but always wanted the shield again only with larger round capacity. Now we have it!! This thing is conceal carry perfection!

I love my three shields (yes 3, and yes for good reason), but selling one to get the plus! If its as improved as it seems, I’ll have two more for sale ;) Holding 10+1 and being the great shooter that it is, this could be an excellent do-everything pistol - car, carry, home, nightstand... If I could only have one pistol, this could be it - tho the Glock 19 hold 15+1 and doesn’t look a lot bigger... but Im a Shield fan and I still like the security (real or perceived) of a safety.

You failed 2 mention that the "PLUS" model comes with a 13 end mag which will not fit in previous Shields because it is wider. The PLUS has a 1/10 inch wider grip.

Totally agree. If you are looking for a first carry gun, have a Shield or Shield 2.0, and are thinking about the Plus, stop thinking and buy the Plus!!! Amazing daily carry. Grip texture, trigger, and capacity make it a no-brainer!

I have a S&W Shield 9mm and replace the Henge Trigger with a Hyve Monarch Trigger (flat face). A very real improvement. I now also have a S&W 9mm Shield Plus.. With the new Trigger the Shield shoots as good as my Shield Plus. I am keeping Both.

Nice review! I got the original Shield about 6 months ago, also wasn't crazy about the grip so put a Talon grip on it, which feels great. But now thinking about upgrading since the Plus looks pretty sweet, especially with a 13rd mag. Does S&W usually raise or lower their price on a gun after it comes out? $549 seems a little high for guns in that class.

I do not own a shield but have a friend who bought the new one and offered me the original for $300 with three mags. He carried it daily but hardly shot it. Is $300 used a good price?

I’m really really liking this gun. And I have the original Shield But I’m so used to carrying my Glock 26 with a spare 15 round mag on my off hip and 33 round mag in my carry bag and two 17 round mags in my truck and two 15 round mags in my work locker. That’s why my G26 is hard to be beat. And it’s easy to carry IMO. Little fatter ...but it doesn’t bother me at all.

I have the original Shield and the Shield Plus. You mentioned the 10 round mag. I'm not sure you said the 2nd mag was a 13 round magazine. I've had my original Shield for over two years and S&W called the finish Armornite. I like both firearms.

@@signsofthetimes886 You would have to be stupid to pay $500 because it doesn't have night sights and you're going to pay $25 for a transfer. It's most likely going to be around $450 in regular stores. It's probably best to wait until winter to let them work out any bugs and to let the price drop down.

Talk about the PALM SWELL for Pete's sake! It's one of the reasons for a much better grip. The Shield Plus grip is slightly fuller. It isn't just about the texture.

That whole “reset” sound/feel is often mentioned in reviews. When you are at the range and have been shooting for a few minutes, so you really pay attention to the reset? Second, in a firefight, when the agrenalin is pumping, are you going to notice reset or trigger pull?

Well, a heavy trigger can pull your follow-up shot(s) off target when dealing with a tiny little pistol. As far as reset goes, I always assumed that the concern was the distance you have to let the trigger come back before you can fire again (and how quickly or slowly it happens).

And I just got a M&P40 Shield 3.1” Performance Center with night sights. The only way I could see myself upgrading is if they gave us a 10 round 40 S&W Performance Center with an optic cut on the 3.1” Shield.

My original shield with talon grips, Apex kit and maguts mags is great. I will have to shoot them side by side to see if the plus is really better. The apex trigger is really great.

Love the M&P Shield and I'm impressed that S&W was able to add extra capacity while largely retaining the same size. I was kind of hoping that the Shield Plus would be a tad bit smaller (P365 or even the Hellcat size), but the Shield is still an excellent size for conceal carry. I have the original Shield and never upgraded to the Shield 2.0 (bought one but my wife claimed it after a few weeks when she decided to carry a 9mm in her purse instead of her Ruger LCP2 in 380). The new trigger is a major selling point for me. The hinged trigger on the M&P 2.0 lineup was a major improvement over the original M&Ps, but they weren't the best. After hearing all the great thing about the Shield Plus' trigger, price (slightly cheaper than the P365 and Hellcat), and higher capacity, I know what I'm spending some of my $1,400 on. I'm really hoping S&W brings the new trigger to the M&P 3.0 lineup whenever those pistols come out.

No the p365 grip is way too small. They made the right decision.

@@shenmue5507 For you it might be but I think it's the perfect size for a conceal carry with high capacity. I have large hands and the P365 with the pinky extention mag allows me to get a full grip on mine or I can use an extended mag if I wanted more grip length to match/exceed the Shield Plus. The Shield Plus is still tiny and easy to conceal (I had no issues for the most part when I used to carry my original Shield for years), but for that purpose I personally prefer something a little smaller. P.S. are you a Shenmue fan by any chance? If you are, what are your thoughts on Shenmue 3? I just finished playing Shenmue remaster and absolutely loved it.

@@JacksonWalter735 I purchased the p365 in December and my hands are honestly too big for the gun. There's no room to rest my thumb and my trigger finger runs into my supporting hand when I pull the trigger. I think the p365 is a better pocket gun but for the belt I would say the shield plus wins. Shenmue 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time! The first one released when I was in grade 6 so it's been a long time. I didn't enjoy Shenmue 3 though and it definitely wasn't as good as the first 2 games. Breaks my heart to say it but it's the truth 😔.

Oil thr rails. The spring tension is a little stiff no worries over time it will be much easier

Sweet Deal! Just wish they added a rail and optics ready but I still plan on buying one when magguts comes out with the plus 2 capacity. 12+1 15+1 Imagine that, same capacity as a Glock 19 for it’s size.

It should be 400-450$ because it doesn't have night sights like the hellcat and p365. You're going to pay extra right now because it's newly released and covid-19. Im going to give it 8-12 months and let them work out any problems with the gun. I have a feeling that the coating on the polymer will be a mistake that they end up changing. It's good that this exists though 👍.

As always, great review Hegshot. I've been patiently watching the Shield series. Now I think I'll "pull the trigger." Have to disagree with you on the mat finish. I love the look of the Plus finish.

Hey man I feel you, id love a shield plus. But it’s just not worth the price to upgrade. I don’t mind the trigger and 3 rounds is nothing to me, I’d rather have less weight anyways. I rarely even carry my shield 1.0 because i carry a budget 6 shot snub nose. I’m not going to war, I just need something that I can defend myself with. And if something were to happen to it or if I were to have to use it, god forbid, I don’t want to have to get a nice gun confiscated from the police. If someone wants to give me a free shield plus I’m totally down though lol.

Definitely a huge step up. The shield isn't bad for what it is. I don't own one personally but enjoyed shooting it.

I finally got the SHIELD PLUS --- Feels good in my hands / this is My First Shield ( never liked the original one) - glad I waited for S&W TO UPGRADE IT! - But As a retired Gunsmith - I always do A Tear Down to Inspect the Whole Firearm- Deburr any Sharp edges And Always Polish All Contact Surfaces( mental to metal / metal to polymer). The Trigger is better But I just don't like Plastic Triggers! So I installed, Just a ALUMINUM TRIGGER(apex) -Polished the Trigger Bar And Contact Surfaces of course. but Still had A Funny Feel in the Trigger Function - so I got A Spring Kit (Mcarbo) - installed it And THAT did the trick! almost ... I can't help myself , when your a Gunsmith for So many Years (gun owner too) I Always customize my firearms to fit ME / My Hand (arthritis)/ Feel of the Trigger & action . so I'm still Tinkering with the Trigger Components ( striker safety plunger , spring ,shark fin on the trigger bar , return spring on the trigger) - And HAd to Change the Sights ( old eyes) to XS - Sights. Took it to the Range Finally - Not too Bad - But It's a New Pistol And I have to Get Adjusted to the feel of it to get Better Shot Placement.

Good video but at 7:48 I think you got your guns mixed up when you spoke. I think you meant to say the new version was glossy and looked a little cheap. Interesting side note, my shield plus doesn't look as glossy as yours so I wonder if they changed it up a bit?

I’m lovin the triggers most manufacturers are startin to put in sub compact pistols. All except Glock, still get the same old kinda crappy trigger they’ve used since the 80s

I am 54yof and I own the original shield. It is very snappy & wants to jump out of my hands when I shoot it. So, now I carry my keltec p32. I want to start practicing with the shield, so maybe eventually I'll get used to it. My question is: Does Mrs Hegshot have a favorite handgun that she carries every day? I enjoy your videos!

Better trigger flat shape, nicer trigger pull, better reset, higher capacity, MecGar made magazines, coil spring for the magazine release instead of the Glock type rod spring molded into the frame, internal steel chasis, cerakoted frame, better grip texture, extended metal magazine release, 13 round magazine sleeve is secured to floor plate so it won’t move...............Shield Plus > Original Shield

I have the og shield 9 with apex trigger, night fission sites, hyve extended mag and mag release. Also couple more hyve parts coming and a sampson magwell coming. So I'm good , don't need the plus in my eyes.

They make a 10 round clip for the original shield.
