The other day I cleaned my Taurus, and of course I needed to clean my wife's as well. So here you go. Watch me clean her Smith & Wesson M&P Shield.
Here's a link to the cleaning kit I used - amzn.to/3vCQnKL

Good video. Only one recommendation: after pulling the slide back, and locking it in place, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to lower the yellow seer deactivation lever. The seer deactivation lever that Smith & Wesson is implemented in their M&P Shields is a lever that is used to deactivate the trigger. Then rotate your takedown lever 90-degrees. release slide, and then you can pull off the frame without pulling the trigger. Doing it this way reduces wear on the trigger mechanism.

@Les Deffner could the sear deactivation lever be a later model upgrade from S&W? Maybe author’s gun does not have it thus needing to pull trigger. We do it all the time on Glocks. I tried to look at video, I don’t see the lever.

LOL thats funny but Ill tell you a new M&P can be extremely tight till its been fired at least the recommended 100+ rounds and even then the slide release and the the takedown can be fairly difficult that is exactly why they came out with the new M&P EZ.

I just bought the 9 ez. That slide lever is tough as hell. I cannot release it without pulling back the slide. Not sure if it’s the design or it’s new. The regular shield 9, I can push the lever no issue. But it’s also had thousands of rounds through it.

If you don’t feel like pulling the trigger, you can always move the yellow lever to the down position when slide is locked back. Then pull slide back and unlock it and bring the slide in the battery position and it’ll continue to slide forward.

Good vid, one exception, you do NOT have to pull the trigger to remove the slide. With slide locked back, pull the slide release lever down, then grab the slide and pull to the rear (with the sear lever down) and the slide comes off. Without pulling the trigger.
@withfishes

with this video i just found out about the unlocking the slide and pulling the trigger. Seems much easier but is a bit more nerve racking if someone sees you doing it. I have to field strip for my CCW test. I'm going to find out what my instructor says about the 'pulling the trigger' during the field strip. I don't think he'd appreciate it too much. especially since its at the range.

For all of you saying that it's almost impossible to release the slide with the "slide release", it's a slide lock.....not a slide release. Now, most guns make it much easier to pull the slide lock down, to release the slide, which is pretty freakin' important, in my opinion, if you're in a self defense situation and have to change the magazine. I love the M&P 9 Shield, but to me this is a design flaw. Here is a good video on how to fix this problem. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ykzOmJ51nOM.html Don't blame me if you screw your gun up, though.

Nice tutorial for the M&P Shield! I always use nitrille gloves when cleaning, and hoppes will remove finish from wood furniture. I also prefer FrogLube products to clean with: non-toxic.

Thanks for the tips. I'm not too concerned about the table I was cleaning on, but I do have a cleaning mat now. I'll check out the FrogLube products too!

Thank you, first time gun owner and your video really was helpful. Through watching some videos earlier I did learn that you don't have to pull the trigger anymore to release the side. Once it's locked back if you look down from the top you'll see a yellow lever. Push that lever down and you'll release the side. When finished just insert your mag to reset it. Thank you

I just got my first gun, and I've watched several other videos where the person has disassembled the gun in just a few seconds because they assume everyone knows how to do it. Thank you for going slowly and explaining!!!!!

Pretty sure you should follow the solvent up with oil anywhere you used the solvent on a metal part. The solvent does not offer any sort of protection from rust. After that, you do want to proceed with placing oil at the lubrication points indicated by the manual.

Yes, and read the manual on where to oil. You left off some places.

Solvent will invite corrosion and rust on steel if it is not coated with a fine layer of grease or oil

Probably the BEST part of this video is that you do everything SLOWLY. It is so annoying to try to follow someone who whips their gun apart. Trying to do my gun while watching theirs is impossible. Constant pause, drag back, start again. Grrr!! Other "teachers" need to watch YOUR video's to see how teaching is done!!

Use tungsten disulfide (Ws2)! Dry powder, slipperiest thing on the planet, sheds carbon, bonds to metal by rubbing it on, doesn't attract dirt, doesn't come off, withstands 100,000 lbs. of force, eliminates wear. I run my guns dry with NO problems or signs of wear. Better than oil (oil attracts dirt) but if you are worried of what I say, Ws2 also blends well with oil and can be used together. I've been using it in my car's engine oil for 12 years and the engine is like brand new (no wear!!). Nasa uses Tungsten disulfide (Ws2) on the Mars rover. Great for guns!

Good video. One recommendation, buy a box of exam gloves for working with paint thinners and gun-cleaning fluids. These chemicals are toxic and your skin will absorb them.

Read the manual, use only 1 small drop of oil at ALL 7 designated locations, 2 on the barrel, the four rail slides and a very light touch of oil on the trigger bar were it touches the striker safety and the seer. Too much oil will leave you gun a mess and will collect/attract dirt that can/will foul your gun. Also you gun may be equipped with a little yellow lever that you push down to release the seer so that you don't have to pull the trigger to release the slide for cleaning. It is outlined in your manual, if you don't have the manual you can download it at the Smith&Wesson site, or call the customer service number (they are very responsive). It is a great way to prevent accidental discharges and worth getting in the habit of using if you have it. Also use a brass wire brush to clean the barrel, it will get to both the surface and the groves. If you don't have a cleaning kit, you can get one at Walmart for 10 bucks, well worth it. They also have cleaning patches and Hoppes solvent and oil. Good luck.

You don't have to pull the trigger to take it off. Just fold down the sear lever. Also, you missed some lubrication points: barrel and firing mechanism. Read the manual: snwcdnprod.azureedge.net/sites/default/files/owners-manuals/M%26P_Shield_All_100119_3009898.pdf

Why is the slide lock so hard to release the slide foward on this pistol?? It takes and extra 2 seconds to pull it back after reloading another mag?? That could cost you your life in a L or D situation??😮🙅🏻🤷🏻🤷‍♀️

My future wife’s gun. She has tiny hands and is petite. I love it, but boy is it small! My hands wrap around it and it becomes hardly visible. This specific model is a perfect EDC. Breaking down this gun can be a little tricky and always trips me out pulling the trigger to get the slide off.
@tomkelley7174
@tomkelley7174 4 года назад
Hey! You don't pull the trigger to release the slide. You swing the magazine disconnect up to the 12 o'clock position and the slide comes right off. It's in the manual for crying' out loud.

Missed addressing the sear de-activation lever position adjustment, wiping the bore dry, applying oil to barrel/slide contact surfaces. Suggest you learn more detail about a subject matter b4 posting a "how to" video.
