I love how Apple not so subliminally showcases the Air user as either the young grade school kid or the less-technically inclined senior in a few of the photos, whereas the MB Pro is utilized by the goal-oriented college student, the serious professional photographer and business-oriented corpo-type. Just a loose observation with a bit of jaded perception. Love Apple's marketing team.
Thanks for your review! I went from a 7 year old MacBook Pro 15 and bought the base M1 Mackbook Air hoping I would like the smaller screen and leaving the MacBook Pro. After watching the video, the Air 13" seemed like it had the specs for what I needed. Immediately after unboxing the M1 Air, I knew I wasn't going back to a larger and heavier MacBook Pro. The gold is a rose gold and so pretty! The keyboard is much easier to use. I think the air is so cute, and actually like the smaller screen. The speaker is louder and better than my older Macbook.
Thx for spotting those tiny differences that both of these machines have. I'll most probably go with the actual 13" Pro. It seems to be more than enough for web development tasks, some light photo editing, and better sound (incl. the mic). Also, it's lighter than the 16" Pro model (whatever CPU it gets in the nearest future) and thus offers more mobility and saves luggage weight.
The wedge shape is so much more ergonomic and comfortable for the wrists. I have had the MBP13 and the Air 13 and 11, it feels so much nicer to type or rest the wrists on the Air. Also it feels more portable. I will sell one of my 2 MBP 13 (4 ports) and get the basic Air for travel. I just wish it had more that 2 ports and still had the SD card reader, or at least the 2 ports on opposite sides, to alow flexibility with the charging cable. But the basic Air sounds like a good deal. The RAM and SSD upgrades at 200 USD each are a rip off, they should cost half the price.
@@ReneRitchie Hey just one question If I'm planning to keep M1 MacBook Air for 4-5 years for my general office use like mails , presentation, sometimes movies , web and RU-vid mostly Is 8 GB ram enough/good or should I buy with 16 GB ?I hope you see this and give your expert advise
@@AtifKhan-oz2dm you only need more ram if the applications you use are CPU intensive or you have many apps open at the same time. 8gb is fine for those tasks even if you have a few apps open
@@AtifKhan-oz2dm the extra RAM is $200. If you plan to keep it for 4-5 years that’s a pretty decent price for that many years of use. I went with the 16GB myself. Best of luck.
I have never considered how 'aerodynamic' my computer was. Always something new… The M1 is offered with 8 or 16GB RAM (integrated memory), two Thunderbold/USB 4 ports and max 2TB SSD storage which seem restrictive on the low-end 13" MacBook Pro and the mini. These specs are exactly what we've come to expect for the Air. The new MacBook Air has finally come into its own. The previous model was dandy, though hobbled by Intel thermal throttling. Three times faster, twice the battery life and No Fan? I think I'm in love! I'll look at a mini when there are more upgrade options. Can you even imagine??!!
I am so glad I finally discovered a channel that is no nonsense, very objective and sometimes subtly funny. Just like the other videos I really appreciate both the intro and outro. There is a noce build up in the intro towards the main questions, and there is the perfect answer at the end awaiting for you after having covered every single aspect. The best channel. By far. Many thanks!
@@GalaxyNexus1 I mean the air had 2 ports to begin with, plus the less detail people can see of me the better (Id like a 240p setting). I think passing on something that offers performance on such a high level due to a camera is probably not worth it
@@raykreiger4123 well I’m not interested in The Air. The MacBook Pro is what I’m interested in and they offered a low end model previously with only 2 ports, but also a higher end with 4. The higher end is what I wanted. Now, that 4 port option is only being sold with Intel. As for the camera, I use it for work and need it to be great quality, especially during these times, and a 720p cam in 2021, on a $2000 computer is far from cutting it. I mean, even the iPad mini has a 1080p camera! I’ve been using my iPad Air’s cam as of late, which is also better, but my Surface Pro’s cam is fantastic, but it’s old and has been unreliable because of that to use for remote work. But, that’s my point...it’s absolutely insane that the camera on a 5 year old Microsoft Surface Pro is still better than a current, expensive MacBook Pro released in 2019 and 2020. smh
@@GalaxyNexus1 well this is simply something similar to an engine swap. In fact to me at least I predicted they wouldn't even change the display. As for me im a student that wants to get away with the lowest possible detail since im somewhat of a shy person. for me personally I just want a 240-140p setting for the camera for my kind of zoom meetings. Two ports is also enough for me and the absolutely insane performance of the m1 chip.
@@raykreiger4123 I would have even been willing to pull the switch with an “engine swap" with the full product line. But they did the swap on the lower end, 2 port model, not the 4 port. I need to connect several things and the dock and dongles and peripherals all jammed in to one side thing is not only pricey, but annoying, cumbersome and messy.
been waiting for these to be released for months. after having multiple iphones and ipads i’m so excited to finally get a macbook. ive gone with the macbook pro with 16gb memory after saving for 2 years. so so excited counting down the days till it arrives!
I’m with you. I’m hoping they soon release a 14” Apple Silicon MBP, with at least 4 ports, a 1080p camera, and a redesign. Then, I will hand over my money instantly.
If we all go out and buy macbook air, that means Apple will run out of M1 chip with 1 faulty GPU core and had to put in M1 with all cores working instead
A question that many of us may have: MacBook Air with a storage upgrade to 512GB (AND) a memory upgrade to 16GB for 1,399.00 Or MacBook Pro with ONLY ONE of the upgrades but for 1,499.00
@@guilhermeadan2329 personally, if you're thinking about upgrading MacBook air to 16gb, that means you value performance. Since the MacBook pro has a fan it'll have better performance for sustained periods of time, probably being a better choice than Air with 16gb over time. In this case, you can upgrade storage to 512 and keep the base ram Performance tests will come out next week though so more accurate recommendations will come.
Either you need 16 of RAM or you don’t. Either you need 512 GB of storage or you don’t. I know I need 16GB, and I want 512 over 256 - doesn’t matter if it’s the MBA or the MBP. So the MBA is definitely the more affordable option.
What are these "heavier" workloads that would be too much for the Air? Anything beyond video editing and gaming? How does handling large Excel files work? Thanks!
It will get m1x I’m pretty sure M2 won’t come till 2022 when they change the air and the 13 inch pro again I mean unless they change the M1 base pro and the M1 air again next year but I doubt it and if they do they probably will do it in a year with probably only improvement is M2 chip and slightly better battery but idk cause theoretically the base 13 MBP didn’t get a power improvement until Tuesday so I’m guessing they won’t upgrade the air or the base MBP until spring 2022 because i think next year they will focus on the higher end macs unless the air next year in June gets a fan and M2 but see that doesn’t make sense so I’m pretty sure they won’t upgrade the lower end macs until spring 2022
2021 November so far away I just got 2 MacBook pros 16 gigs one solid-state drive with the M1 processor can’t wait to review them 216K on RU-vid thanks 🙏
Well.. natively and much faster as the chip is better. But my confusion is support for keyboard and mouse in iphone games like pubg mobile and cod Mobile.
I really don’t think people should buy the pro. There’s a a large chance it will be *immediately* outdated when a 14-inch MBP comes out in (what looks like) March. The Air was made for the M1, the M1 on a MBP looks like a Pentium in an iMac, it doesn’t push on what a MacBook Pro can do and what it’s capable of. I’d wait for an M1X or M2 MacBook Pro myself.
14 inch will cost $500 more than the 13 inch people have a budget and I’m pretty sure they’re going to skip the March event unless there’s a HomePod 2 or some type of new AirPods and airtags I doubt they will bring that in March they will probably release it on June and I plan on buying the 2020 MacBook Pro m1 I just dk If I should get the pro or the air
@@AidenRZ777 Even more reason to get an Air. I mean if you're right and the 14" MacBook Pro starts at $1800, that puts the 13" MacBook Pro at a weird spot. Because, you can either cheap out and get the Air, or get the Pro that would probably start with 16GB of RAM and 512GB or 1TB of storage. And there are rumors of a March Event happening next year.
@@Sirius19716 It's just speculation. There are some rumors that there will be a March event next year to announce new Macs. It's not confirmed, it's just a rumor.
@@evancrazyerror If I have a budget of $1300 shouldn’t I just buy the base MBP M1 now and the 14 inch pro will probably start at 16gb of ram and 512gb of storage but $500 out of my price range
The Touch Bar is the antithesis of Pro. I've had the 16" for nearly a year and still haven't found a way to make it actually good useful for workflows. They even have the gall to put in on iPad Sidecar and when you remove it it interferes with your other settings?? Come on Apple. Let it go.
For someone with significantly less subscribers than most mainstream tech RU-vidrs, you seriously knock it out of the park in graphics, animation, video quality, and overall information. Well done.
We (the US) adopted the metric system in 1866 and, if you look at US product, it always has both metric and "real" measurements on it. Personally, I like metric for some things and other things, like temperature, F is far superior in choosing things like "do I need the thick hoodie or the thinner hoodie today?" I also like miles on the odometer, liters for gasoline. LOL... BTW, how do you buy your TV screens?
@Dale Kerr weight makes sense when it’s in kg tbh. I agree with height tho. Temperature on the other hand makes no sense with Fahrenheit. Fahrenheit is an inconsistent scale, while Celsius is more well defined with 0 being freezing and 100 being boiling point.
Another great video! I got my wife a new MacBook Pro to replace her 2016 model, and a good trade in to boot. 16GB of RAM and the 1TB SSD, can't wait to get it for her!
I've got one for you for the big review. I'm a graphic designer and I was going to buy a MacBook Pro with 32GB of RAM. The big question now is: can I live with 16GB of "Unified Memory" without Swap memory kicking in, or should I wait for the next round of Apple M1"X" Macs? (I already know it is LPDDR4 RAM). Thank you. Cheers from Portugal.
The MacBook Air ditches the Launchpad & key backlight up/down function keys, replacing them with Spotlight, Dictation& Do Not Disturb keys. In the case of the key backlight adjustment, this is permanently in the new Control Centre & optionally can also go to the Menubar.
@@MapleEmpire Well, they didn’t bring XCode over, but at least they made app development on iPad possible, even if it is limited. It seems their strategy is to slowly mature the platform in that direction. I just wish they put more effort into getting it done faster.
How about this, start off with the Air and see how you like it. If you feel like the Pro would suit you better just sell the Air and pay the difference for the Pro, its not that much especially if you bought the 512 gb Air.
I really think the decision between iPad and MacBook is getting blurred especially now that Mac can play iPad apps. I have an iPad Pro and I am considering switching out to a MacBook Air.
Agreed. Next IPad Pro will likely have mini led, but eventually so will the MBA. Paying for touch on the iPad (particularly the 12.9 where many just use it with the magic keyboard) is looking like quite the premium.
@@sg2664 as I have the new iPhone 12 pro the screen is bigger. Also I never use the Apple Pencil, so if I was to sell the iPad and pencil I would get £450, and I am a student so I could get the mba for £899, so really it is only £450 difference. Just feels like it may be time to move. :)
@@adarshanand5928 even the iPad Air pricing with keyboard puts you in same price range as new MBA - so you have to really value and prefer the touch and pencil. That will be an easy decision for many artists and note takers. I am neither and while I love the simplicity of the iPad OS, I much prefer the mba form factor to an iPad + magic keyboard.
Thanks for the reviews. Which 2020 model would you Recc below? Appreciate the help! 1. MBA - $1259 8/8 Core 16GB unified memory 1TB SSD1 2. MBP - $1295 8/8 Core 16GB unified memory 512GB SSD1
Ordered the MBP. Really looking forward to its arrival next week. I will also wait updating my iMac to Big Sur, to get the maximum next gen feel when powering up my new computer
What would you guys suggest? This years MacBook Air with the m1 chip for $1456 or the last years MacBook Pro for $1736 without the m1 chip (on sale $190 off)
I expected to spend a couple of hours browsing and watching You Tube videos to understand the difference between MBA and MBP (I just need the low end for travel, to complement my iMac) but after your video I can go and do something else now - you have summarised it so very well, succinctly. Thanks!!
Have been playing with my Macbook Pro for a few hours now and my observations are as a work / casual user 1. Battery life is insane its dropped 4% in 2 hours - updating app's, web browsing etc... 2. Microsoft office downloads and works without any flaws as yet, as do a few of the regulars - Spotify, pocket casts, Pocket 3. Adobe creative cloud doesn't shows a popup that says not optimised of Apple Silicon 4 Geekbench results and Cinebench (Fan did spin up when going through the test) are as reported - excellent. 5> apple apps simply fly - Safari opens in a blink of an eye, numbers etc. are equally as speedy Pretty happy so far
The active cooling might make a much bigger difference if it is summer and you are doing something outside the house. In winter both might be closer together...
Rene. When you say a longer video get the pro, how long are we talking about. 20-30 minutes? An hour long? Thank you so much. This has been so helpful.
I guess what I am most put off by in this whole m1 launch is that the leap forward does not look super impressive from a performance standpoint. The extra battery life is nice, and I think that this is going to be the big selling point. Considering on the MBP nothing else but the system board/memory and maybe ssd type changed and the air was the plus a new screen, the battery improvement mostly came from those changes. This is impressive. It makes me wonder what Apple could do on a full blown desktop experience like say an iMac or Mac Pro. Would have been nice to see one of those so we could see the real power Apple Silicon could bring along with the battery life
So, I went to best buy yesterday and ordered MacBook pro. It was delivered today with wrong color. I took it back to the store immediately. About to reorder, the sale rep told me about the new release and guess what? It is the same price as the one i had bought. I preordered,Skeptical about it, i came here for review. And thank goodness i made the right choice. Can’t wait to see my baby on Tuesday 😌
The performance of my iPad pro is incredible, but I want desktop apps so I got the MacBook Air. Can’t wait to see how it compares to my 13 inch base model intel MacBook Pro
Before I watched this video I was illiterate and confused about macs- I now can carry on in a discussion about what is best for me ( I will wait for the M1X Mac Pro ) Rene, you have a great ability to take a complex subject and make it very simple, I will be watching your future videos, Thank You. Bagel ForScale
I picked up the higher end 13 inch Pro back in June as my previous 2016 model was getting close to the end of the keyboard and display warranties and both had already been replaced once. Happy with the machine and should be able to suit my needs for a few years at least. The new Macs intrigue me but not enough right now to worry about switching. Maybe when there is an M2 chip and/or a full redesign.
@@ex0stasis72 how many of you replace your iPhone yearly? At first yes, cause these are going to get fast drastically each year. But they’ll hold with time like iPhones.
@@Wanted797 I'm more of an Android fan myself, for phones at least. But ya, for the first 7 or so years starting in 2008, I used to upgrade smartphones every year, sometimes hopping back and forth between iPhone and Android because it was still early days and the next year's improvements were dramatically better than what I had. Now I keep my Android phones for 3 or 4 years before upgrading. If you're curious about why Android. It almost all comes down to the fact that Android lets me set any (I repeat, any) third party app as the default for that web service. Tap on a Reddit link in your web browser? It should open in the third party Reddit app of my choosing. The second reason is that I want to be able to swipe to go back from the right side of the screen, not just the left like iOS forces.
Great video as always. Would you consider the Pro 13.3 with touchbar over the air for only a $150 difference? Worth the extra Nits and extra 2 hour battery?
The fan doesn’t even kick in in the pro... a lot of people tested it for somewhat heavy uses and the m1 is fast enough to finish the task before the need for a fan
This was helpful as always. But what's the performance difference between 7-core GPU and 8-core GPU? I cannot find a detailed answer for it anywhere on the internet.
I'm a student and wouldn't need crunching performance on a daily basis. Shall I go with the MacBook Air (base variant - 7 core GPU and 256 GB SSD) upgraded to 16gb ram ( or) MacBook Pro (base variant- 8 core GPU and 256 SSD)? PS - I'm from India and even after upgradation the Air is costing around $150 less than the Pro.
You can go with the base variant of the air, even the 8 gb variant can suffice your needs,as you will not much processing power.Instead, you can go with the upgraded 512gb ssd instead of upgrading it to 16gb ram
Great video comparing the two models. Well done! Both my old IPad Pro 9.7 as well as my 27” iMac Retina late 2014 are starting to show their age although both thankfully still work reasonably well for most of my needs. Do you think the new MacBook Pro M1 is a good compromise that will give me the best of both worlds - so to speak?
Help me what to choose? I type for long hours for making stories I do video editing I do photo editing I study “ as a college student “ I will NOT sell my laptop and I will keep using the MacBook for more than 7 years Should I buy MacBook Air M1 16 ram with 256 SSD OR MacBook Pro M1 16 ram with 256 SSD Note: I think the wedge shape of MacBook Air is better in terms of typing but I don’t trust the no fan after long years of my usage as it might damage the MacBook And I think the fan in MacBook Pro is better for future proof BUT I don’t trust the touch bar as I read that a lot of people had freezing problems or cracking the touch bar which damages it
Thanks for the review. Currently considering replacing my 2018 Mac Mini / iPad Pro combo for either the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Still undecided but this video really helped. Thank you for putting it together
Will there be a noticeable difference between the 7 and 8 core gpu on the air ?? And since the air doesn’t have a fan, will the 7 core model produce less heat too?
Hello Rene please M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Air quad core i5 which one Is better for video editing? I will appreciate if you give me the right answer thanks.
Can MacBook Air be good for gaming or should I just get pro. I currently have a 2013 MacBook Air. Since it’s not supported with macOS Monterey i want a upgrade plus the computer is old. Still runs like it’s new
Apple now offers four different M1 MACBOOK laptops for four types of users: 1.) The M1 MACBOOK AIR is for casual users who mainly use their laptop to surf the web, write emails, send text messages, listen to music, watch videos and on occasions may write programs and/or edit music, photos and/or videos using inexpensive or free apps. 2.) The M1 MACBOOK PRO is for amateur hobbyist and semi-professionals who have outgrown the inexpensive and free editing/coding apps and now require a laptop capable of tackling slightly bigger and more complex tasks. 3.) The M1 PRO MACBOOK PRO is for avid hobbyists, semi-professionals, and professionals who want to use powerful, best of breed, computers and apps to do serious editing, programming, data analysis and content creation. 4.) The M1 MAX MACBOOK PRO is for avid hobbyists, semi-professionals, and professionals who require the MOST powerful hardware and software to do the MOST complex and demanding tasks in their respective industries.
Got a question... do MacBook airs tend to last shorter/break sooner than pros? I have a 2014 pro and it’s been working perfectly, so whatever can get me 6+ years of mileage too would be great
I mostly agree with Rene's thoughts on buying the pro verses air 13 inch laptop. The only point I'd make is that those of us who can only afford to replace on a 4 or 5 year cycle always need to buy the best capability that can afford whenever they buy. My late 2013 iMac needs to be upgraded and I'm tempted by the mac mini as the iMac screen is still fine for my uses, but I don't think 16 mb RAM is a long term answer as is the restriction to only 2 Thunderbolt/USB C ports. cheap
Hey René! I was positively surprised with the Apple Event. I’ve got some questions. My roommate is a professional photographer (uses expensive DSLR cameras and lenses) and he is wondering if the MacBook Air is enough for photo editing. I’m on a two year old MacBook Pro for music production (15.4 inch) and it’s doing fine. I’m still interested to upgrade to a M1 MB. Should I wait for the new 16 inch with a even more powerful SoC or is the new MB Pro 13 with M1 enough (with 16GB RAM)? I realize that it’s maybe hard to answer because personal preferences. Why I ask you is because these Apple products are very decent priced in my country! Almost any Apple product in my country is very expensive (my iPhone 11 with 128GB costed me the equivalent of $1016.66 US dollars!). But hey, I like it. Apple.
I gave my MacBook Air 2018 to a friend. I recently visited them and picked up the laptop from a house. And wow 2.75 pounds made a huge difference. So much lighter than even my M1 MacBook Pro.
Hi, I‘m economics and CS student and I can’t decide if I should buy a MacBook Air 16 Ram, 512GB or a Pro 8 Ram, 512 GB, I wanted to ask you for your opinion since we don’t really know yet how does the integrated ram in the M1 works
