@@evergrandebestrealestate4854 it gets warm but not hot if you stay with normal office work. I tried Counterstrike on my MBA for about 40 minutes and it got way warmer. But the missing fan still won't be a problem for you

@@evergrandebestrealestate4854 I have had an M1 Air for 6 months. Base model. I use it for some music production using Cubase, work (Google Drive and other Chrome things), and playing WoT Blitz. It does all this without much trouble. Cubase get it quite warm, not hot. Blitz doesn’t even bother it on highest settings.

I'd love the 14 in with the M1 Pro. I don't need it though. I picked up the M1 Air base model last December and am very happy with it. I also have the M1 Mac Mini and I love it. The new chips would be a waste for me. Love your video's Gary!

I love the M1 MacBook Air. It outperforms my 2017 27 inch iMac with a Radeon Graphics card and 32GB of RAM and the battery life is pretty amazing. I think I may trade my iMac for an M1 Mac mini maybe next year.

A very helpful review when thinking about value, especially. I’m leaning toward the Air 16G, 512SSD, as I tend to multitask quite a bit and hope to do a lot more with video editing, and music. I’m tempted to get 1T to give a lot of future room but feel I might want to upgrade by then anyway, and to keep the Air mainly as a portable. Appreciated, TED!

I wish Apple did a 14 and 16 inch Air with M1 and then the 14 and 16inch Pro. I think for many of us the M1 is enough but would love a bigger screen. 13/14 inch is just too small.

I think that's kinda like a sales strategy. They are luring you little by little so you are gonna spend more. Notice the maxed out M1 MBA is pretty close to a maxed out M1 Pro MBP 13, while a maxed out M1 MBP 13 is pretty closed to a based model of M1 Pro MBP 14. It's a strategy I believe... but no doubt the M1 Macs are just so good.

that's exactely my take. I want a bigger screen so 16 inch is perfect for me by I dont need those high end specs by any means. So we don't have a choice here :( either 13 inch mini screen with great specs or 16 inch screen with over the top sepcs and premium price tag :(

Your point on portability and accessories is perfect. That’s why I think the 14 inch pro is the sweet spot between portability and power. The 16 inch with a 12.9 iPad though makes me question the need for an external monitor thanks to sidecar. Great content as usual Gary!

The expectation for me is still that I was running my event's videography business off a 2011 MacBook Pro and software as well as some video formats I use have gone backwards as far as horsepower needed to run fine. I would be more than comfortable editing my work on a 16GB VRAM M1 Mac Mini all the time. My limited time with one blew me away. The baseline 14" would be considered overpowered for my work.

the ports, magsafe, display, and internals are incredible on the 2021 macbooks, but i got the m1 air last year and it suits my needs perfectly. also i honestly wouldn’t be able to use an m1 pro/max to its fullest potential but the display and ports would be nice. i’m gonna be sticking with my m1 air for a few years. i’ve got the 16 ram, 512 ssd variation.

Just want to ask if you also experience the MagSafe charging issue on the 16” MacBook Pro (M1Pro)? The issue is when charging the unit when it is turned off, the light (and charging beep sound) on the MagSafe turns on and off repeatedly and it doesn’t charge the laptop.

Good comparison, Gary! I would like to the air VS the base 14”. I have the air, performance is ok, but I don’t like to wait either. I do photo editing and video, some for money, and some for family. I have the 256GB SSD. It is just to small. 512k would help, but I think 1TB would be more appropriate. The base 14” with 1 TB SSD would be a sweet spot. But, I need to wait a bit. Is it worth 2199?

Recently picked up a leftover 2015 15“ base model for 200€ (~$230) as a written off machine from my company and was perfectly happy. Got an M1 Air for my dad though (warranty, one cable for all setup) and I have to admit that that thing is quite a bit more snappy - I might need to hop over to that (16GB/512GB though most likely) some time soon 😬 14/16 would be overkill for my use case.

I have the 13" M1 MacBook pro and it was worth it earlier this year to upgrade both the memory and storage of the laptop because the 14" had not yet been released. Even if you are buying the laptop today, upgrading the system memory of the M1 may still be worthwhile since it will still be so much cheaper than the 14" Pro.

Hello :) I've finished uni and will start teaching soon, that's why I need a new laptop. For me, the most important is that I really don't have to worry about battery life and that I can easily have 5 powerpoint presentations opened at the same time, as well as 40 tabs on safari without my laptop freezing. Everybody says the M1 chip is just more than anybody needs unless you are a power user, but I don't really know if I am a power user with my expectations - so I'm not sure which one to buy, as I will have to use the laptop probably every day. So I wanted to ask you: would you recommend me the MacBook Air 16/512 or would the base model be enough? Or is it better to spend more money and get the MacBook Pro? It is also important to me that the MacBook will survive 5-6 years, I don't know how much influence the configuration has on that. So get a 2021 MBP if you really need the extra power, or the extra ports and the portability with fewer/no dongles. What if you don’t need the extra power but like the extra ports? Is it worth the extra just for the ports? And maybe piece of mind future proofing power-wise? I’m thinking probably not given how good the M1 MBA is, maybe get 16GB/512GB MBA plus dongles, or is base MBP 14 the sweet spot in that case? Great video BTW, had a few laughs watching this one, Gary must’ve had fun making it.

Upgrading from M1 Air to 16 Macbook Base, the bigger superior screen is the decision for me. For portability I have the 12.9 ipad pro. These are both great devices because you can leave the charger at home.

Fair call when comparing to the base 16". If you compare the M1 Air to the base 14" Pro though, it is a hell of a lot closer and I think the 14 wins for most general usage. If just a general user like myself that splits my day with travel, video and RU-vid watching, the odd game now and then and being able to link to a HDMI TV once at home, the base 14" Pro hits every mark and is only 33% more than the Air when you factor in RAM and storage. Everything is personal circumstance.

I think I'm getting the 14 inch Pro, it's the sweetspot between the two. The base 14 is also only 40 percent more expensive than a macbook air with the same specs (512gb ssd, 16gh ram)

I ended up popping on the M1 Max. My primary use case is editing 4K video. The M1 MacBook Pro with upgraded ram is fine, but it often stops for renders as I start to stack up the edits, its frustrating. Also, I am also now tired of the dongle game

I tried the MBP 14, but it was too much computer than I need in a laptop. I really loved the XDR screen, tho. The ideal laptop for me would be the M1 Air with 16GB and XDR. I know the M2 Air is getting XDR, but it'll also have those wretched white bezels/keyboard and goofy colors. Why, Apple, why??? Why you do this to me??? Great video, Gary!!

Refreshing, sane review. Save your money people. Understand your needs and buy just what you need. Future proofing also doesn’t make sense. In 2 years, something cheaper and better will come out and if you just get what you need and take the savings and apply it towards a future machine you likely come out ahead.

I like the combo of an iPad Pro and a 13” M1 pro. Active cooling, affordable performance, and all dongles work across all machines. Grab one cable/accessory case and both machines get down to whatever task you need. And if I need an HDMI port, I don’t bother with a dongle or a real port (like my 2015 retina pro): I use a Roku Stick and AirPlay my presentation over an adhoc (or actual) network. Way better than being tethered to the screen.

I think M1 air is a great value, I mean I have the Macbook Pro M1 with the touch bar and it is still an amazing machine. For most people in my opinion is that the M1 is the perfect laptop, it is fast, has great battery life, and is portable. Now of course there are reasons to get the new M1 pro and max processors for some people but I think the problem is most people now overlook that M1 but still a very relevant and capable machine.

The intel MBA was just meh - it was small it was light but other than being able to run OSX, it didn't really distinguish itself from the other ultrabooks. The M1 MBA is another story, it can trounce the intel ultrabooks. The MBP max is fast but 90% of people don't need that sort of thing and the 10% that do won't even stress the machine 95% of the time.

I had around a $2000 budget for my new computer. (I know it’s a lot I’m lucky af) Instead of a going for the new Pros I got a 16GB air ($1500) plus a 27 inch dell 4k monitor ($500). Going to the monitor from my old staingate ridden 13 inch MacBook Pro screen was a game changer. When all of my notes and lecture slides which were all previously squished together now being spread out across 4X the area made it so much of a better learning experience. Got a keychron keyboard for $60 and a pair of Sony XM3s ($200). My Air was expensive though because I got 1TB. The SSD upgrade was $400 itself.

The Air with a ton of dongles is still more portable than the MBP 16 because it’s all separate parts that can fit in various places or shapes. For example, the 16” cannot fit in any saddlebag on any of my motorcycles due to its physical dimensions… but I can use multiple smaller machines and all the adapters and dongles.

A lot of people (myself included) rarely use wired accessories with their computers - I get some will need to for transfer from their camera etc. but for day to day work including coding I see no reason to use accessories - Same reason why the single USB port on the Surface Pro line never bothered me all those years. The only problem I have with the Air is how it's distorted my view on computing - I need and use and love Windows PC as well as Mac so will always own a "good" PC like a Surface device, but the Macbook Air destroyed the price:performance expectations as well as battery life expectations at that price range.

if you are a student , go with the product that offers you the best return policies and the most wallet friendly when you or one of your class mates accidentally breaks the computer. But if you have cash to burn go with apple :) they do hold theyre value well but when they break it sucks :) (please back up all your essays, assignments or what ever in the cloud) use things as overleaf and google docs :) they you will always be gucci

Completely agree. The average consumer doesn’t need a powerhouse that is seen on the 16”. I have the MBA but put 1TB SSD and 16GB ram. It works great, and is a great compliment to my iPad Pro 11” 3rd gen and 13 Pro.

Just got my M1 MacBook Air in today. I needed to transfer some files from my old 15" 2015 rMBP a few minutes ago. Opened it up, checked the battery percentage, 24%, should be plenty. half a minute later it shuts off, can't turn it back on until I plug in the charger, and then it'll happily display 24% again. Been like that for a while now. God it has not aged well. The M1 feels like it gets out of my way again.

My first computer was a Morrow Micro Decision 1 in 1983. I was fortunate to discover immediately that efficiency + clever, user-focused software spells fun. (WordStar!) By that measure, the Mini would be my choice because it would enable an efficient, clever pipeline for the video and audio I record with an iPhone 13 Pro Max. Oh yes, Final Cut plus Compressor on the mini to spit out small, beautiful vids edited from Dolby Vision HDR footage - that's a fun workflow. Not fond of laptops - makes my neck hurt to think of looking down all day.

I like the MacBook Pro 16 but I wish they would have included a USB port! These are pretty common. An Ethernet port probably would have been nice as well. I hook my laptop directly to the Internet modem. It works better than the wireless modem. The new MacBook's may not have that problem.

I'd love to have 15" Air with ProMotion display, SpaceGray, full TB4 and multiple display support. Ports, performance etc.... I could stay with M1.

M1 Air is awesome for most end users not doing heavy work, but the ram/disk space/screen size become a hindrance for even a hobby developer.

Think of upgrading my current laptop, I'm a professional graphic designer and I'm looking at the M1 Air. Currently run a MacBook 12 retina (M7 core) 8gb 500gb hard drive. Would I be ok with the 8gb ram and 500gb hard drive air? Or should I get 16gb ram. I normally have at least 3 Adobe apps open at once.

You’d definitely be fine with 8gb. The m1 8gb feels like a 16gb machine. And if you’re coming from 8gb it’ll still feel like an upgrade. If you want to splurge go for the extra ram (tbh it doesn’t make a $200 difference for design work though!)

@@arnold2428 Thanks for the reply. Thats good to know, my current 8gb has been fine. I'm also tempted to go for the smallest hard drive storage option and just plug in a 1TB Lace rugged drive.

Do NOT get the 8gb!!!! I promise you you will regret like i did. I come from a 2013 mbp 16gb and based on all the reviews i decided on the M1air 8gb. Lightroom is basically unusable except for extremely light use and even then it will be very frustrating. Every single click i make on any function takes at least a second, it drives me nuts and i will need to sell and upgrade. (I couldnt return it). Don’t believe me but i promise you you will regret.

I like the new M2 Air even though I have the M1 Air base model. What I would like to be honest is a 16 inch M1 Pro with 16gb and 500 or 1TB but I am broke.

I love my M1 Air, the CPU is more than enough for me, but as a developer I run into RAM limitations occasionally so I might pick up a Pro with 32GB

Yeah I love the Air, but had to get a pro with 16GB RAM/1TB space for development. You very quickly run into limitations unfortunately even though it's wicked fast for other uses.

My 9 year old windows notebook needs 1:30h render a 8 min 1080p video and i have seen videos of the macbook air rendering a 4k 5min video in a few minutes .. to this will be more than enough 😅 Only thing I am afraid of is going from 15,6“ to 13,3“😬
