14" MacBook Pro vs 13" MacBook Pro! Why Pay TWICE as Much?! 

I’ll stay over here with my pro 13. It’s a beast! And it still has the Touch Bar which I love!

MacBook Air is perfect for me spec wise but I need that screen real estate. Wish they would release a 15' MacBook Air since getting the 16' MacBook Pro is overkill to the extreme

I bought the baseline 14”, it’s amazing to use and I love it!

I purchased a MBP 13 16RAM 1TB SSD. The only I miss from the 14 Pro is the SD slot and the better display. apart from that, the lighter weight, smaller edged and overall form factor, Touch Bar and being able to get 1tb of storage for 300 less was a deal breaker. battery last more than the AIR M2 and the MBP 14.

I honestly don't think this is a fair comparison. The 13 inch mbp with 16gb of ram and 512gb of storage is already $1700... So paying an extra $300 for a 14 inch mbp with better screen, performance, web cam(if you need it), and more ports isn't that much more imo. If people want to pay less or don't need the performance, might as well go for the mba. I'm super biased and I max out 8gb of ram so ymmv.

The base M1 MBP 13 is a nice proposition for the price however if you even consider touching that options button. I’d defo go for the 14 MBP Pro Base. Great comparison 👌🏾💯

Great video I always trust what you say. Any chance you can do a video detailing whether the 14" Max is worth it over the 14" Pro. I am in two minds, I want a 14" model over the 16" but not sure whether forking out all that extra cash is really worth it.

I’m actually coming from the M1 MBA myself, I traded it in towards the 16” M1 Pro. I’m using it primarily for video editing in FCPX, and it’s definitely made a difference in a lot of areas for me, primarily rendering/exporting times, scrubbing 4K timeline, screen real estate, screen quality. The biggest con I have after picking the 16” M1 Pro up is that it’s heavy as FFFFFFFFF compared to the M1 MBA full stop.Carrying that thing to work is crazy different, now for me the price difference I feel I came out really good using the student discount and my trade in, with tax, I spent about sub $1800.

I totally disagree with the port argument for myself after using the m1 pro for about a month. I am a professional graphic designer, and I haven't even purchased a dongle for my MacBook. Every modern tech out there is USB-C, so why do you even need a USB A or a Dock? Most modern office projectors are capable of Thunderbolt video output, and even all external SSDs come with a USB C cable. As for Memory Card, yes, for people who use memory cards, it sucks. But again, just getting an adapter for your SD card seems reasonable, as most pro cameras use CF Express cards, but we cant except laptop manufacturers to start adding CF Express slots too right. Nothing against adding ports, but honestly I couldn't care any less about the ports anyway, I'm all about the wireless life.

Great videos !! They are always so informative on every product you present !! If you ever look to get rid of older models , I would put my hat into the arena.

I work for a hosting company as a linux support agent and usually I have 30+ tabs opened, 10 spaces opened with terminal, Spotify, 3 different browsers, Slack, VPN, mail, openemu, etc. The MacBook Pro 13" eats these for breakfast. Today, I went to a coffee shop for about 1:30 hours and the battery was still at 100%!!! been using the MacBook Pro base M1 13" (256GB drive and 8 GB memory) for about 6 months. Best laptop I have ever had, the promotion would be a plus, since it is hella smooth and it is a game changer but still for the price, it is a must, if you work from home doing other stuff other than creative work buy it (Maybe a Mac mini). If not wait 2~5 years and buy the next best laptop that you can with your budget.

Bit the bullet and bought the M1 Pro 13" 8GB RAM yesterday, after a disappointing 8th of March Apple event (no MacBook Air/Pro upgrades until later this year, or 2023 they say). Retired my 2018 Intel MacBook Pro 13". The vendor strongly tried to upsell to the 14" , but I shuddered at the price, the notch, the less than premium feeling of the chassis, the rumoured short battery life. My new M1 Pro 13" however… 2 days of usage including migration, index building and creating 1 RU-vid video, battery at 37%, I heard the internal fan not once, and can press dialog choices such as "Cancel", "Replace" on the Touchbar which I love... it was the right choice.

Actually, I just ordered a basic MBP 13" - with "only" 8GB RAM. That is my first ever notebook made by apple - except the iPad pro 9.7". With my limited usage case in mind, I don't mind either that touchbar nor those rare ports. I'd use that IMO best Value-for-money (Performance wise and screen quality) machine for development and medium deep learning, preferably on the cloud. Also it runs a little altered UNIX system and that MBP 13" is a great tool for my day on the go :)

Great video as always!! I have questions: I am a full-time photographer and I need to update my old MacBook Pro from 2015. I am thinking about MacBook 14 pro M1 with 16GB RAM and 512 ssd or MacBook 13’3 PRO M1 with 16 RAM and 512 ssd. There is a price difference at 300$ between these two laptops. What is the mane difference and which do you think is right for me? I work with big files in photoshop, using Lightroom and creating smaller projects in premier pro.

As always a comprehensive and fair review! A rule of thumb I use to address the issue of “future proof” a laptop computer is try and not exceed 50% of its performance. IMO when you can’t up grade a laptop it is vital to give yourself extra margin. I keep laptops for 4-6 years and feel it works well. Desktops and upgradeable laptops you can go with less margin. If you trade your laptop every 2 years you can get by with less margin also. Is there a better way to to address “future proofing”?

I am upgrading my early 15 Macbook Air to the new 14-inch MBP. I just want the Mini LED display and I keep my apple products for 4-6 years. I went to best buy and looked at the 13.3 and 14.2 inches side by side and the display looked so much better. Although I don't actually need anything more than the Air.

Not a single word about the massively better speakers? Also bigger trackpad, 96Khz soundcard, better mics, and the actual performance difference is bigger than you state.

Is it cost efficient to get a 14” M1 simply for more ports and a better display? You can attach an external hub that fixes that issue on a 13inch M1 ? If one is ultimately going to be using an external monitor with the 14m1 well sure the screen is great but??? Yes if you are truly portable with your MBP14” then accessories might be a pain, but I suspect 99% of people use their laptops 99% of the time at home at their desk=hubs& accessories a non issue and cost saving?

I have the Macbook Pro M1 13 inch and I gotta say that 14 inch is such an awesome machine. I got the M1 13 inch at launch I gotta say it is still such an amazing machine, for most task, it is still super fast and the battery life is night and day. Also doesn't get nearly as loud as my old 2015 Macbook Pro which I notice also these chips run so much cooler

Respectfully, the title is misleading. The MBP 13 with 16/512 config compared to MBP 14” base, price difference comes down to 300$ (with better GPU, IO’s speeds, ports, pro motion XDR display, multiple display support.) Also you spoke like Apple will never sell a refurbished MBP 14” model.

Would you recommend upgrading from a mid 2019 13” MB pro with the i5 chip to the 14” MacBook Pro? My main issue with my current MB pro is its battery life and it also has the old butterfly keyboard which sucks.

As someone who has even the M1 MBA and has been using the MBP 16" M1 Pro, I can definitely say the upgrade is negligible given the price difference. Yes it's faster in video editing, yes it has a better display, but overall utility of the device hasn't drastically changed. If anything it made me admire what the MBA 8GB Ram is able to pull off with no fans at that size. I'll make my own video on this but without a doubt, the MBA with the M1 chip is the best value currently IMO. I would choose the MBP 13' but I hate the Touch Bar 😛

If you spec the 13 to the level of the base 14, (add $200 for 512MB, add $200 for 8G more RAM) that would be $1,699 vs $1,999. For $300 more you get magsafe, better monitor support (HDMI without a dongle) and a bigger screen. I would get the 14. I'm looking at this now for my new work computer and I do some video so the 14 to me is the obvious choice. I also own a M1 Air and what a deal for $800.

I recommend this : if you like ports and need tham and have problem with dongle and hobs go and pay extra I guess 600 (and more) dollars and buy base 14 and if you don't use ports alot go and buy 13 air with I think you can find one of them for 800 dollars and maybe 16g ram for 1000 and that's big difrence . When I can buy an iphone with my MacBook instead of buying that guy and it doing my job . It's all up to you guys .

Apple, please give us a non Pro MacBook 14, with the same design but without the mini LED and Pro Motion Display, a non Pro/Max M1 (or M2?), and why not the new iMac 24 colors, all for the price of the MacBook Pro (or Air) 13 ! That would be a home run ! I really like what these the MBPs bring to the table but I don’t need that much power !

OK, time for some help from Gary or anyone else that can help (I knew this moment would come with the new MacBooks) : I'm running a RU-vid channel as well, but the videos I upload as far less technical than the others in terms of editing. I upload 1080p videos with minimum video editing tricks, very basic and simple editing in iMovie. Other than that, my 90-95% of my work (I'm a teacher of mathematics and a writer, so it's mostly running my website and writing books and papers in Pages) is rather light. So, the question is this: Since time is pretty close to buy my first laptop (I still work great with my 21.5'' iMac of 2011, always been a desktop person but now I must go to a laptop), do you suggest I get the MacBook Air M1 with 16GB RAM and 512 GB storage (costs 1800 euros in Greece where I live) and have to also find the right dongles to have a flawless workflow, or do I go to the much more expensive new 14'' MacBook Pro (base model as the one in Gary's video) with same RAM and SSD? (it costs 2500 euros in Greece). Not talking about the M1 MacBook Pro, because I hate the TouchBar. Also, an external display is almost certain to buy in case of the M1 MBA, maybe so too in the case of the new 14'' M1 MBP. Any help will be highly appreciated, friends :-)

If you spec-up Pro 13 to 16GB and 512GB SSD and add the HDMI and SD Card dongles, it'll be aroun $1899 whcih brings it to the price of Pro 14. No one should buy the Macbook Pro 13 and leave Air for the budget ultrabook.

Why everybody keeps telling that those MCP are expensive? 1. it’s made for the “Pro’s” 2. If you are a Pro, probably your equipos expensive, why the editing tool should be cheap? I made the upgrade from a early 2015 MBP. That time I made the wrong decision and bought the entry level and last for 6 years, yes 6 Years! With these one I went Max spec in the 14” model (except for 1TB) and I will be using it for AutoCAD and for one specific program using Parallels. I’m hope that one last at least 7 years. If you are a “Pro” and will make money of it, don’t say it is expensive.

In Malaysia, if M1 Macbook Pro is spec out like M1 Pro Macbook Pro (16gb ram 512gb ssd), the price different is only around 360USD. With additional 360USD for better screen, better performance, better speaker, better webcams, more ports, supports 3 monitors and more, you couldnt get wrong with 14" M1 Pro Macbook Pro (base model).

Am I missing something? Base Model MacBook Pro 13-in. (M1, 2020) is $1,299 and Base Model MacBook Pro 14-in. ( 2021) is $1,999. That's not double.

It's not TWICE as much. It's only $300 more when spec matched. Well worth it. Don't even think of getting the 13 if you can afford the 14. You'll regret it!

Just went and typed on my 2013 MBP and it's still better than the new one... but the new one is, well, good enough. Wish we could get that old keyboard though.
