Not for me, I think for average creators they will be fine! For professionals such as yourself and I love your channel and all your work, I think you need the next generation macs! I use a $899 Mac mini and I don’t have any issues with file sizes, ports etc. I have color finale pro, it works great! I’m not at the point of using all the pro plug-ins, one day I hope to have your problem 😂
I will wait for the M1X 14&16” MacBooks to come out, especially since a lot of plug ins and Adobe Premiere Pro is not completely optimized for it, only a Beta Version is out, the full M1 native is supposed to come out this summer. And like you i have a Canon R5 too and plan on getting a Red Komodo 8K which i saw from videos is basically inedible on the M1 MacBooks. For the moment i stick with my maxed out Macbook pro 16, with which i had none of the problems that you described yet.
not at all. I don't use plugins, I use just one or two SD cards each time, the rest of the stuff isn't relevant to me either. I'm a very amateur editor, not professional, so I don't care about these issues, I just wanted to know if the m1 air 16 gigs is capable of high res video editing without lagging or crashing. good video though. edit: sorry, got to the performance part now. this actually kind of comforted me because I'm buying the 16 which is double the ram of your's, and I'm not shooting 4k and def not raw 8k. so looks like this should work for me :) thank you
Its bonkers how hard it was to discover this video. Lately I’ve found RU-vid tends to really hide negative yet invaluable videos such as this one. It’s not just small companies, but larger companies like Adobe have massively failed at upgrading their software to be compatible with M1. With all of that said, I wonder if an iPad Pro could work as an inelegant but workable workflow solution for importing and exporting footage . Sometimes the glass really is half empty. Thanks for breaking down the realism of real world workflows which are a batshit crazy and require creativity and patience. It almost feels like shooting on film is a much more sane solution than dealing with over engineered and buggy potato tech. What a time to be alive ! 🙈😂✌🏻⌚️⌚️⌚️⌚️⌚️⌚️⌚️⌚️
I totally agree with this review. I returned my MBP m1 16 GB of ram because of the same reasons explained here and have decided to wait for the next generation of M1X or M2. I had issues with monitors , peripherals , audio cards , music and video plugins and in most cases my 16'' intel Macbook Pro (64GIGS RAM) did a much better job and never let me down. It is true , these machines are super fast but they are so new that I fear that the software and even hardware is not optimized yet. So if I can suggest anyone to buy an M1 , I would suggest a 16 GB RAM mac Mini , I would not spend on a machine which is not ready yet... The same applies to new iPad Pro , I fear that if they do not come out with a revolutionary iPad OS 15 , that power is wasted and not optimized yet.... However , I found this review very precise and very honest... I wish I could have seen it before.... I watched some reviews made my MaxTech on the M1 that led me to buy one and I regretted it because they were not really true. In this review , I found most of the true issues I found with these processors. I will continue following . Thanks
Maxtech is really annoying channel, mostly feels like advert paid by Apple. Picking up only positives and never mention any problem. I was really disappointed with h265 conversion performance. Also having all kinds of issues, although the positives are strong.
I use an external hub powered by the MBA charger and never had an issue with disks unmounting. But with the first hub I bought, I ran into the unmounting and copy errors you described. It wasn’t the MacBook’s fault, but the hub’s. Now I edit on Davinci Resolve without a problem, I’m very happy with my M1 MBA
Glad to get from you a bold and honest user's opinions on the pros and cons of the M1 Mac. These are stuff that Apple wouldn't tell us and many Mac die-hard fans wouldn't admit it not to mention some of the Mac KOLs would highlight the pros but hide the cons from their supporters due to the chained commercial interests. I believe that time would solve the problems as we wouldn't think Apple would turn back to Intel and more software developers would fine tune the softwares for the Arm based M1 chip. Thanks again for your enlightening video.
The issue you are talking about at 10:44 is definitely a RAM issue if you only have 8 GB and editing heavy footage. It probably was swapping to the ssd and just clogged up.
I bet many of these issues can be solved with different peripherals and a maturing of the software. Anything but M powered Macs at this point feels like a product that is in the past. M1 is an absolute game changer in terms of power per watt, RAM usage, GPU performance. I can only imagine as Apple’s hardware matures with the software. Curious to see how the M1 iMac performs since it is the first product designed around the M1.
Lol wow. I came from a i9 2018 15 Inch and my M1 13 Inch runs circles around it for everything. If you come from the Intel series any M1 will be lightyears better for anything. I'm running Cinema 4D, After Effects and FCPX at the same time. Never had any issues yet. My i9 chocked on my RED Komodo 6K raw and the m1 chewed through it like nothing. Mind blowing.
Thanks for your honest feedback and review. I edit my vids on the 16” MCBP my wife on an old 13”. And I wanted to get her the current air. Which I will. We don’t do edit raw or 8K files, regular canon 4k is the maximum and for that it’s still enough. I think also that the air is the entry level of MacBooks and for that it does offer quite a lot. For heavy lifting let’s wait for the new 16” and I am pretty sure also the plug in issue there is going to be solved.
Great video. The Mac mini is basically an entry level device. M1 made it very appealing to professionals but it seems like someone with your professional requirements would need at least the 16 gigs of ram just to meet a minimum professional workload.
Yikes!! Crazy how no other reviewer went into this much depth. I am looking to get an M1 air for my RU-vid and client work, the plug-in thing is huge for me. I don’t shoot raw so I think the 8GB ram should be fine for my needs until the iMac Pro M1 gets here.
The only deal breaker for me is the memory swap issue that is ongoing. Due to the low ram, many users are experiencing high data volumes being written to the soldered in SSD. Many project that at current rates many writing at, they will only last 2 years. This has REALLY put me off purchasing one. If I get one, it'll only be used for DJ'ing and not editing.
@@charlesnetzler2262 No the SSD, which is worse. So essentially with the M1's they only come in 8-16gb options. It was said that that was all they needed because they're so optimised. In reality though, they seem to be using more, so what happens is because the SSD's are so fast, they're able to act as ram when you're running low. The problem with this is that SSD's (if i remember right) typically have a lifespan of 200ish TB of write cycles, and many people are managing to write 10+TB a month. Obiously we don't know the real quality of Apples SSD's (im going to say they're going to be pretty good), but this is still worrying. More info can be found here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ArM4uoe4L7Y.html&ab_channel=ConstantGeekery
@@_MJ07_ There's not much evidence this is an actual problem and most people won't experience issues. However, if you're doing professional work you should buy what you need and not cut corners with essentials like RAM and storage. Expecting an 8Gb machine to be your main editing machine, day-in and day-out, isn't smart.
@@bizmonkey007 well if you look into it deeper, you'll actually see that there are many instances of people showing the smart status of their SSD, and it would appear that some have already used as high as 10% of the theoretical ssd life, so I'd hardly say that. Also, the machines only come in 8gb and 16gb options, you're talking like we have other options currently.
Sheesh. Been thinking of getting a macbook m1 for this sort of stuff but I can't really decide over an Asus zephyrus. The trackpad is one reason I want the macbook over the asus laptop. The size too. But the Asus can provide more gpu power if I ever need it, sooo, I'm indecisive
The M1 compatibility with some Motion VFX, Pixel Film, and Neat video plugins is unfortunate. I can't use many of those either on my 16Gb M1 MacBook Pro. I use it with the Caldigit TS3 Plus, and connect numerous external drives simultaneously, plus my CF Express Type B Pro Grade Reader, to pull footage from my R5. Never had any issues with un mounting or not discovering drives. If I did, that would be super frustrating for sure. I must be lucky, as I never get crashes or spinning wheel lockouts. I use both Resolve and Final Cut on it, with H.265 R5 Clog files in 4k primarily.
With new technology we always have to wait for new firmware for existing devices like TB2 external drives, Xrite external calibrator. I think you have the wrong hub for your set up. I have the MacBook Air, picked up Apple CalDigit TS3 plus that solve all the power issue for external devices, you will need CalDigit Display port 1.2 to HDMI for external monitor. #vancouverfilmmaker
I use lot of open source programs and obscure apps from indie developers on my mac and one of my concerns is that they will never get ported to the new processor. For now we an run them using rosetta, but what if 3 years down the line they drop rosetta. These are the things keeping me from pulling the plug.
The only problem with the 13in m1 vs the m1 air w/ a mod out performs the 13in. This can void your warranty but the air with some added thermal pads will make the case like a heat sink making the air not lap friendly. It had draw backs if you do that but if performance in apple ecosystem especially on a budget can’t go wrong with the air.
I was sold from what i heard from all the people on youtube. I bought an m1 and it couldn’t even play my average timeline. It said it would take over 20 hours render my 23 minute video. My Alienware rendered that video in under 30 minutes
The keyboard damaging the screen is what happened to me with my old MacBook Pro. I solved that by putting a piece of cloth in between the screen and the keyboard. However, I found the keys with new switches on this new MacBook have more key travel which makes me suspect they extrudes higher and putting anything in between the screen and the keyboard will add more pressure to the screen. Can you share experience on this? Thanks.
thanks for this video, really. On the other hand, now I am even more confused as to what to get. I'm still using a Macbookpro 2012 and it is starting to give me a lot of headaches crashing all the time. I do want to upgrade but I am so confused as to what to get. My videos are not overly edited but plugins are always nice to use and if you cannot use them, then what's the point. I've been thinking of getting the Ipad Pro m1 instead, I honestly don't know. I don't want to get many devices, just one that sort things out. Anyway, thanks again
GAH! I just bought an M1 a couple days ago based on your other video. I definitely want to be able to use the Motion VFX plugins - which ones don't work on the M1?
If you go to MotionVFX website and select Apple Silicon ready.. you should have a list of plugins compatible. I just don’t have enough money yet to buy the plugins that I need
Hallo Damien, i have ordered today my M 1 Macbook Pro 13 with 16 GB RAM, and 2 TB SSD. Since the more powerful 14 & 16 inch M1x/M2 will be delayed through the shortage of the new Chips which are just being produced in Taiwan i said it makes no sense to wait any longer, since my previous Macbook pro 15 6 core had become irreparable after the lithium io battery literally exploded and destroyed with it the entire Motherboard. Do you have a 4 or 5 K external monitor ? I hope that by maxing out the RAM and SSD that the USB C ports won’t have the problems of being underpowered as you described it in your video
I’m starting RU-vid rn and have and old MacBook Pro (2015) Have a camera that only goes to 1080p and I’m just starting to understand about more complex stuff like motion graphics so I don’t use it a lot Will this upgrade be worth it? I’m a student so I don’t really make a lot of money, but my mic is clearly holding me back (anytime I put some luts or more advanced transitions it’s simply unplayable) Is the air a valuable option? I saw a promotion here in Brazil (apple stuff are REALLY expensive) so i was thinking about it Anyone has an advise?
Have you tried transcoding Canon 8k raw on the M1 with Canons Cinema Raw Development App? I’m looking at picking up a Mac Mini just to do this so I can transcode 8k raw files to ProRes then finish editing on my PC. Wondering if there is a huge/noticeable advantage?
Apple made the ram meter very confusing. Although it never shows you are out of ram, it is swapping heavily and degrades your ssd. That's also probably the reason of sudden slow down you mentioned in your video. With small ssd like 256GB the lifespan can be exhausted within months. So I would definitely recommend 16GB model.
Damien -- check out issues with the M1s blowing through their HD life. Apparently TBW (Terrabytes Written) numbers are high; can, with regular use, use up their effective life in a matter of months.
You’d be fine with either. I have the pro with 8gb ram and I edit 42mp raws through capture one and photoshop without any issue. Capture one and Lightroom are not m1 native yet so I’m guessing those will only improve even more
@@FEARisCOLD photoshop on the iPad isn’t great Adobe seem to be doing nothing with it affinity photo is so much better on iPad but yeah with macOS it would be amazing I can’t see them doing that though
I think your kinda of pushing it to its limits becuase you only have 8gbs of ram. also as you said your shooting out 8k footage. Im just looking at it as a good travel laptop for 4k edits with maybe a sony a7iii or a7iv using final cut pro x but would be getting the 16gb of ram instead. What do you think? @Monkeypixels
I'm curious is anyone could tell me whether or not the Periferal issues are with thunderbolt or with the draw of the devices. The laptops thunderbolt connectivity is limited, however a thunderbolt hub could solve this
Look, I'm not saying your video wasn't helpful, but it sounds like a lot of your issues aren't entirely Apple's fault. Plug-ins? Tell the developers to work on an M1 update. Daisy-chaining external drives? WTF?! Why?! You can't expect a laptop to power 5 different devices... As for your compression/pixel issues, how much RAM do your laptops have? 8gb isn't enough for that kind of stuff. Know the limitations...
Well, it doesn’t matter who’s fault it is if it doesn’t work. I hit up the developers. Seems the technology is hard to translate. I also never said anything about daisy chaining but I’d say using a card reader and an external SSD at the same time should be rather standard 😅 The Raid also didn’t work just by itself. And 16Gb. So the Maximum
@@damiencooper 6:00 ...but, you did... and yes, fault does matter. Should I call Apple and complain about a program they don't make not working on their computer? No. That's not logical.
@@JerridFoiles it was never my point to Blaim anyone for anything. I’m just here to inform potential buyers about current short comings of these computers. No matter who’s fault
@@damiencooper oh ok, well now I will dub your video unhelpful, because your reasons are ridiculous. But that’s not your fault, right? Because it doesn’t matter who’s at fault, right? Guys like you make our industry a challenge to work in.
Hopefully the next gen macs with M1 by then, would be up today with ease and compatibility with premiere or davinci with all plugins. I currently have the 16 but it struggles with the new codecs of the R5.
Seems weird. I copy from my Prograde Dual Slot Reader to a Samsung T7 all the time. I edit off the same T7 with no problems. You really have to be careful with the quality and ratings of your cables. It has become a real mess with USB-C/Thunderbolt 3/Thunderbolt 4. I would recommend CalDigit cables. The plugins were a problem for me but Color Finale is now supported and more to come. I can edit R5 footage from a $1500 MBP so I'm happy with the compromises for now.
On the straight MacBook (with only one USB-C port), there isn't even enough power to run an external CD/DVD drive if there's anything else in the chain. Using my Apple dongle to connect a no-frills monitor and the Apple SuperDrive, the disk drive un-mounts halfway through a movie and throws up this message: "USB Accessories Disabled. Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices." This has made me reluctant to buy another Mac laptop, even an M1. Apple's stingy attitude toward ports and wired connectivity comes across as arrogant if not hostile.
Good video. I see a lot of people praising the encoding speeds of M1 without comparing the end results of how the end file looks. Hardware encoded h264/265 looks worse on M1 than software encoding.
I stopped listening to him when he stated he had a 8gb of ram laptop. Specially when claiming to be a professional. MacBook Pro M1 1 TB SSD and 16gb of Ram. No issues at all. Professional photographer/retoucher who pushes photoshop to the Max, with heavy photo editing.
You seem to be forgetting that you are trying to use advanced tools on entry level machines. This is silly. Wait to the higher end machines come out which are made for your type of usage.
