Here's an extra detail about how good these computers are. We have designers at my office. I upgraded one of them from a top-of-the-line 16" MBP with an i9 and max RAM. Took them 2.5 hours or so to render an 8K image. I upgraded them recently to the top-of-the-line M1 Max chip with a 32-core GPU and 64 GB of RAM. It now takes them 15 minutes to render that same 8K image. These chips are such a massive improvement over Intel, it's silly.

What's both scary and exciting here is how the scalability allows Apple to basically turn its vertical hardware architecture to return to what Steve laid out upon his return to Apple: 2 user categories, 2 setups - and 4 devices that just focus on the best of their category. Couple that with the adoption of an orthodox Bauhaus mentality on product design and user experience.

The enduring question in my filmmaker mind is where they will land with the performance oriented iMac models, specifically with the monitor. If it is on par with the XDR, unlocking real HDR content creation, I’m all in. The flip-side is where they will land with performance oriented Minis, because a juiced up Mini with an XDR could still end up being the HDR golden ticket, especially if the iMac monitor turns out to be lower nits.

Apple switched to custom shader cores with the A11, if memory serves, and full on Custom GPU cores with the A12. @Winkoo6
@Winkoo6 2 года назад
There is no reason to put PCIe slots to upgrade the SoC, the PCIe 4.0 x16 have 32GB/s transfer limit, the current unified memory on M1 Max can reach 400GB/s transfer limit. You will need at least PCIe 8.0 x16 to match the speed with the current unified memory, everything else under that just slow down your machine.

@scottstewart5784
@scottstewart5784 2 года назад
They thoroughly test the function of each chip. if it's perfect - fine. If it has a block or two not functioning, it may qualify as a lesser version. If not they trash it. Having a chip with a bad block or two (that we didn't pay for) doesn't mean our other blocks are at increased risk of failing, or that we may have other non-functioning blocks. It's like baking soufflés for a large gathering - you bake 25 if you need 20, and if three deflate, that doesn't mean the rest are bad. You sold 20 and delivered 20.

The iPhone cameras are capped to 12 megapixels and that'sfine. But when i do check details of my shots. Most of the rearcamera shots are 9 megapixels, and the front camera picturesbe like 5 megapixel quality photos. Only 1 out of a 100 stand outto be a 12 megapixel photo. Why so???

These new processors are cool and all but I’m probably not going to buy a new Mac until bootcamp works with the M series.

Can you tell me why my M1MAX 14" laptop can't seem to get Safari to scroll smoothly? It stutters like Window95 ... very dissapointed :( @Apple says, clear your browser history - funny, Chrome scrolls fine!

I was going to ask if the concept of the Mac Pro is redundant, but Mac Pros are designed to work far more ram than even the M1 Max uses.

The M1 Max can actually use up to 100 watts of power (in High power mode only) 29 watts for the CPU 46 watts for the GPU (32 core GPU) ~20 watts for 64GB of memory (10 watts for 32GB config) 5 watts for other systems (Neural Engine, Media Engine, etc) The M1 Pro can use up to 65 watts of power 29 watts for the CPU (10 core CPU) 23 watts for the GPU (16 core GPU) 9? watts for 32GB of memory (4-5 watts for 16GB config) 4 watts for other systems. The M1 can use up to 30! watts of power 15 watts for the CPU 10 watts for the GPU (8 core GPU) 3 watts for 16 GB of memory (even less with 8GB) 2 watts for other systems For comparison, the cooling system in each Mac can handle: Apple Silicon Macs: ~100 watts for 16-inch MacBook Pro (M1 Max) ~85 watts for 16-inch MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) ~80 watts for Mac mini ~50? watts for 14-inch MacBook Pro. ~25? watts for 13-inch MacBook Pro ~25? watts for 24-inch iMac ~10 watts for 13-inch MacBook Air Intel Macs: 250? watts for 27-inch iMac* 1400 watts for Mac Pro* 80 watts for Mac mini *These numbers are under the assumption that the dedicated GPU(s) is/are being stressed

I think what I need is not a waterfall of apple branding, but a graphic that displays when each technology was introduced at what power level and its increase in power over time. Obviously when it is introduced it a pice of technology would be good. If chip density is a major factor in the design add that too. I have a feeling that behind all the branding clutter is a mercilessly continually optimised processor core, a slightly later designed graphics core & and ai core all designed to be run in multiple parallel blocks and all run on the best bleeding edge hardware money can buy.
